Dark, if only because there hasn't been a decent dark trainer yet, and I'd get to use Umbreon. I love Umbreon...

Bugs. I'm studying entomology, I work in an insect collection, I do field work with bees.

Dragon

Garchomp
Salamence
Kingdra
Dragonite
Gyrados

That'll do I guess, I suppose I'm a bit limited if I JUST go with one type, but Garchomp and Salamence are stupidly powerful anyway. And I know Gyrados is water/flying, but all the dragon leaders use him because of the "theme" as opposed to the literal type.

1) Grass Type.

Ivysaur.
Exeggcute.
Jumpluff.
Leafeon.

2) Electric Type.

Magnemite.
Electabuzz.
Plusle and Minum (a two-pokemon battle, just because throwing one into the mix would be fun).
Chinchou.
Ampharos.

Electric...Their type disadvantages can be easily taken care of and i love my Electric types, they are so versatile Fast, Hard Hitting, and only have one weakness...usually...

My team

Jolteon: Thunder Bolt, Thunder Fang, Rain Dance (Muahahahaha) Iron Tail, Dig.

Raichu: Thunder, Volt Tackle, Hyper Beam, Quick Attack, Agility, Iron Tail, Rollout.

Ampharos, Gem Stone, Thunder, Charge, Discharge, Iron Tail, Light Screen.

Electrode: Rollout, Gyro Ball, Magnet Rise, Charge Beam, Light Screen, Explosion.

And last of all Electrivire: Thunder Punch, Thunder, Protect, Brick Break, Focus Blast, Giga Impact, Magnet Rise.

Yeh guys, try beating that! (I know their are more than 4 moves per Pokemon, but this is if it was real life =D )

Its a hard choice between Psychic and Dragon types.
On one hand I get to use an Alakazam, intelligence incarnate. On the other hand I get to use Gyrados, ruiner of worlds.
Then a gain, with dragon I get the added bonus of "elemental dragons" like Charizard that completely screws over people hoping to beat me with Ice Pokemon. (who uses Ice Pokemon?)

Flying type... and I'd have a proper gym too, one with stuff that could conceivably train the flying pokemon.

Diversity?
If I was running a gym, I wouldn't have one set type. That means every challenger will just come in with type advantage and it would get very boring fighting the same pokemon over and over again.
If I HAD to choose one though, it would have to be ghost
Ghastly
Haunter x3
Gengar x2

I'm surprised barely anyone has said water type. I believe it's a type with almost the most pokemon out there, and with only two weaknesses, there are plenty of pokes to balance things out. Also, there are offensive and defensive ones.

For example: Swampert, Ludicolo (oh look both get rid of weaknesses), Poliwrath/Gyarados for offense, Starmie as a spinner, bulky waters like Vaporeon for stalling or healing.. you get the idea.

But fast forward a bit and I think that my definitive Type choice would be Fighting.

I don't care too much for Fighting as a pure Type, but most of my favourite characters have a mix type with Fighting. Heracross, Infernape, Lucario, Toxicroak, Poliwrath, etc. Besides, I realized shortly after that being a Fighting focused team puts me at an advantage over his Steels.
If I were playing just for fun more than strategy, I would do this too. I would right away want to throw in Infernape, BRELOOM!, Poliwrath.. there's three from very different types. I like all the dual types that fighting has.

Bug, they are just too awesome.

My actual Bug Team
Scizor
Ninjask
Butterfree
Shuckle
Armaldo
Heracross

I have all of these fully EV trained too. =P
Ninjask starts, if something is threatening, it turns into a u-turn whore to either Scizor, who's only weakness is Fire, or Armaldo if the pokemon is fire type. Butterfree has 105 accuracy for Sleep powder due to compound eyes, and will dream eater the hell out of anyone.
Shuckle has 614 defense, which is the beezneez, as it knows protect, wrap, rest, and toxic. Heracross for endure and then reversal. Or just close combat the hell out of everyone.

I spend way too much time on this. =D

Electric.
Probably be one of the earlier ones, with like 3 Pokemon.

An Electabuzz, an Elekid and a ZAPDOS Lanturn. Or something.

I'd probably be like voulkner. Do a water gym, but have pokemon other then my type. So have two waters, an electric/water, and either a grass or ground.

EDIT: I have my list. and yes, i would be near the final gym leader.

Go ahead and bite me trainers who think they can just mow through a team with one or two types. youd better bring an army for what i'm packing. and if i could set a condition, for a cool kinda thing, i would set a no legendary/uber pokemon limit.

Ice gym would be really easy, considering all you need is a Hail team.

That's what I'd use.

Electric. They're fast and lots of SP attack. It's only real threat is ground-type, so I could just have a Zapdos or Lanturn, or the new Shibirudon with the levitate ability and they'd be fucked.

My team would probably be: Zapdos, Lanturn, Shibirudon, Magnezone, Electivire and Dentura (Thunderspider ftw)

Or maybe Ground Type. Massive offensive power and aren't effected by electrics. Some careful planning and I can counter just about anything.
