This one's easy. The Water type has only 2 weaknesses that can both be easily accounted for as well as an incredibly wide array of offensive, defensive and support Pokemon to choose from. They only really lack Physical Defense, but that can be offset. My line-up would be:

Swampert - Electric-killing lead who sets up Stealth Rock
Starmie - Lightning quick Special sweeper
Gyarados - Dragon Dancing Physical sweeper
Vaporeon - Bulky Wish+Protect using tank
Empoleon - Defensive set-up Special sweeper
Kingdra - Dragon Dancing Substitute+Outrage sweeper (final Pokemon)

This team is damn near competitive even with the mono-typing. Why yes, I do think about Pokemon too much. How could you tell?

Fire. All my most powerful pokemon have been fire types, and most of them are dual-types that help deal with their weakness

Fire. Because that's my favourite type! And my most powerful Pokémon would be my Charizard!
Damn you for stealing my thought!

Yeah, I'd be a Fire Gym Leader, with Charizard as my 'boss' Pokemon. And I'd have five others, obviously. Typhlosion, Arcanine, Ninetails, Flareon and Magmar.
Damn YOU for stealing my thoughts!

I would be fire too but with Moltres instead of Ninetails!

Charizard w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

Typhlosion w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

Arcanine w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

Moltres w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

Flareon w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

Magmar w/ Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast and Hyper Beam

....... I like fire

Psychic, Dark, Dragon, Normal, or Fire. I just like those types very much.

Psychic: Psychics are really cool

Dark: They're obscure

Dragon: Dragon-type are intense

Normal: They only have one weakness, as far as I know

Fire: I used to always use the fire starter pokemon when I was younger. I feel it's important to stay true to your roots.

As several people have said, I'd go with Steel. Considering its a gym and not a dream team or Elite Four team, I'd say 4 is a good number, and that Metagross would be cheap. So:
Aggron
Lucario
Empoleon
Scizor

Alternately, Ground, if I could cheat and count Tyranitar since he evolves from Ground types. Retaining the 4 rule:
Tyranitar
Claydol
Flygon
Steelix

I totally didn't have to use Bulbapedia to make these or anything...

Choice is obvious for me. Id b a ghost type Gym leader.
Yes there weak against psychic pokemon but a lot of moves cant even hit them and most importantly there cool, they can learn a fck load of TMS and gengar (barrin health) has some amazing stats

I only ever got into the first generation of pokemon, are there more than three ghost pokemon nowa days? Cause if there isnt my gym might b very limited

There are a lot more, and only the original 3 are weak to Psychic (cause of the dual Poison type). Now you just have to worry about Dark types.

I'd definitely be a water gym leader with a loadout of:

Feraligatr

Azumaril

Golduck

Walrein

Vaporeon

I'd have five, since not a lot of gym leaders seemed to have a full six.

Considering how I have 'Iron' in my name it's not suprising that I'd go Steel all the way (it would be a gym full of headbangers and decent guitar solos).

You just can't beat heavy metal.

Can I have more than one type? 'Cause I'd pick a mix of psychic, dark, poison and/or ghost.

PSYCHIC: Kadabra, Xatu, Bronzong, Metagross, Medicham, Gardevoir
DARK: Sneasel, Houndoom, Tyrannitar, Umbreon, Murkrow, Absol
POISON: Drapion, Seviper, Nidoking, Golbat, Arbok, Skuntank
GHOST: Haunter, Misdreavus, Dusclops, Driftblim, Frosslass, Gengar

And as soon as this new batch of Pokemon get English names, I might put them up here too.

EDIT: I'd also like to try using Fossil-based Pokemon such as:
Aerodactyl, Bastiodon, Rampardos, Kabutops, Cradily, and Omastar

Definitely Fire. Charizard, Arcanine, Blazekin, Flareon, Rapidash and Ninetales. I'd be unstoppable.
