Simple. I, as an evil overlord, would have to keep an eye on the competition, and seeing that many already have the resources to fuel any sort of army, it can be surmised that whatever hypothetical resources for whatever army will be presented to these overlords in training. So, if I could grab any of the already listed hypothetical forces already presented in this thread, then I can grab a crystal ball and scry on my enemies. Then, I could appropriate whatever forces have been used, and use them to create an army with many differing divisions, be they mechanical, magical, whatever. Cover the bases/limitations any sort of force would present. Dragons, mechs, biological horrors... All will be mine, and I will stay a step ahead of my squabbling enemies.

However, if I, as the overlord were to go in battle, (for whatever reason) I'm calling dibs on this guy as my stead.

Well since we can clone sheep, that means we SHOULD be able to clone humans right?

So, I just want an army (1-2 million would do) of these:

But, yeah, coordinated, effective, massive numbers, no free will, neigh indestructable, etc. One Borg Cube takes almost an entire fleet to destroy, so I'll send 8 Cubes, several scout ships, ten Spheres and a Diamond just in case. And while they tend to move slowly, Queen Borg and other types suggest that it is possible to develop fast moving drones as well. Theoretically, you could implant nanoprobes into a captured subject that would only effect the brain, making them good covert operatives for scouting.
Better yet, you could stick those 8 cubes into a single massive fusion cube!
Don't forget to bring the borg Dodecahedron to bring 1d12 of pain to the targets.

Personally though i think limiting yourself to one type of henchman is a bad idea. So I would use a mixed force of standard goons and robots.
My goons will be equipped with ordinary guns and provided with some close combat training. They will wear helmets with clear plexiglass face covers, these helmets must be rated to absorb one lead pipe's worth of head trauma without knocking out the wearer.

The kill droids will be mass production models of HK-47
With a couple full models for my personal guard.

The reason for the hybrid guard is for redundancy. Robots are vulnerable to all manner of EMP/virus/dampening field, plus some heroes have a thingy of not killing people.
Normal goons are vulnerable to gas/mind control/conventional stupidity. The robots can shore up these flaws and bring more firepower to the field.

Like a guy said earlier, Disney Princesses, they just can't lose, they'll either befriend it to your side or it will die some sort of karmic death for being against them (and you) and therefore, evil (devilish plot twist!). Oh and you get some catchy songs along the way.

An army of my own creation! The perfect army is own you forge yourself!

An army of mechanical raptors! There fast, agile, quick thinking, swarm targets in seconds, can be equipped with various payloads of weaponry, are adorable, and are fitted with a nigh untranslatable forming of communicating: raptor speak! Mwahahaha!!!

The world shall be mine! No one shall withstand them!

The raptors shall hunt!

Babes. My henchmen would be babes. We would all get together in my secret lair and hang a "No Boys Allowed" sign outside and have an intense Cards Against Humanity competition or something and our only act of evil would be to murder any man who tried to come in thinking it's actually a sexy sleepover scenario. Oh and also we would be charging a superweapon capable of destroying the universe. But that's just a side gig.

I don't aim to be a big villain, just a fun one.

I'm going to use the obvious choice: The Minions from the Overlord series.

The Browns are surprisingly durable for their size, and are capable of being powerful front line fighters with a knack for being deadly with ANY kind of scavenged weapon or armour. They can even kill mighty enemies while wearing a pumpkin for a helmet and a sunflower stalk for a weapon.

The Reds are devilish and can survive any kind of intense heat, and can throw fireballs from a decent range, immolating anything that takes sustained fireball barrages. They can even remove any fires that get in my way.

The Blues compensate the other Minion's weakness of water, capable of swimming, and resurrecting fallen Minions on the fly.

The Greens are brutally efficient, they are capable of turning invisible and are immune to poison warfare, even going so far as to clear up all the poison gas to protect the other Minions. Perfect little buggers for infiltration missions, and very effective in direct combat as well, as they have a tendency to sneak up to their victim, then leap onto their backs and relentlessly stab them with their long and pointy claws.

The best part about them? They are extremely easy to reinforce. Every fallen opponent further reinforces my army by granting me more lifeforce to create more Minions with, and if I decide I need to bulk up my army before invading somewhere, I can just go slaughter a few herds of sheep. EVERYTHING gives lifeforce.

Despite not being too bright, they follow orders to the letter, even running into death, so long as I command it, and they are deceptively strong and effective despite their puny stature, they cover each others weaknesses very well and can go on a wide assortment of missions, and are extremely easy to reinforce. The perfect army.

I'd say if I had a choice in henchmen, I'd take a few tips from the Simic (a society in Magic the Gathering Lore) and harness the powers of biology in order to creature the most adaptable and diverse force imaginable.

These elvish genetic engineers would likely be the intelligent backbone of my entire operation. Having an army full of mutant beasts is good, but powerful creatures without any direction are more of a liability then not. I need capable minds to control my beasts and to assist me in developing more heinous monstrosities, and these guys would fit the bill quite nicely. Being the top dog in your army is important, but you need capable assistants to deal with the less important parts of running a criminal operation so that you can focus your efforts on what is important.

These would likely be the most basic and expendable of my entire force, but it is a necessary role. I would breed thousands upon thousands of these creatures, and they shall blot out the sky with their sheer tenacity! Having command over such a large aerial force will cause hell on whom ever is unfortunate enough to be on my bad side.

These creatures would serve an excellent role as the second most numerous class of beast under my control. The Crocanura is a devilish combination of frog and crocodile, and their horrifying rows of razor sharp teeth would be sure to install terror in my enemies. Excellent for dealing with any infantry that stand in my way.

We need some muscular backbone. The cloudfin's quick and numerous nature and the crocanura's menacing tactics and hunter's instincts would be complemented by the Battering Krasis's brute strength. These creatures in herds could bust through the thickest of armors. An excellent force for storming enemy strong holds and reducing them to rubble.

The last, but certainly not least, this creature would be the least numerous but most monstrous unit. Very few things can stand up to the might of a fully evolved Renegade Krasis. The image speaks for itself I suppose; it will eat, devour, and crush anything that stands in it's way.

However, being the master of biology I most definitely would be, I would devise various breeds of creature for different climates and different situations. Nature is a canvas for which my creative talents would devise from! Each creature is a mold, a mold which I will shape to serve me in my quest for world domination! None shall stand in my way!

...I put way too much thought into this.

This thread has a disturbing lack of Killer Robots.
I've got a couple. My main army would be made up of...
Robo-undead with lasers whose leaders can infinitely resurrect them? Any enemies are going to have some serious trouble with them, and that's not even getting into their bigger war machines (such as giant robot arthropods, portal technology and Lovecraftian entities). As far my elite guard...
Extremely dangerous monsters with an extremely long list of powers (http://bionicle.wikia.com/wiki/Rahkshi#Types_of_Rahkshi) as well as being incredibly loyal? They're the perfect guardians as well as the perfect mecha-monsters to assist my Necron army (and they'd blend in pretty well, which is good because my empire would need a unifying look).

If I could have an army of them? The T-1000 series from terminator would be my choice. Granted they might turn on me, but if that happens it just means I'm a shitty overlord and nature is just taking it's course.

- Perfect infiltrators, can mimic everything from appearance to voice.
- Can use pretty much they're entire body as a weapon, transforming hands into blades and so on
- Nigh Indestructible, nothing short of the heat inside a industrial smelter can take these things down. Bullets? Nope.
Knives? Nope. Freezing 'em with liquid nitrogen and then smashing it to pieces? Nope.

So yeah they would be perfect for me.

Elite Guard though? I guess I'd like the Adeptus Custodes from Warhammer 40k. Even deadlier than space marines? Check. Fanatically loyal? Check. Look badass? CHECK.

Just look at these guys.

I think this has gotten a little out of hand. I'm going to take the question as pertaining to things that are already henchmen-like. As in I would love to have an army of Seath the Scalelesses but there's only one. However, what I would have an army of are skeletons. I do lean towards robots, generally, but there are a number of factors to consider.

Information: In the event of a capture, how much information is your minion going to divulge? With humans or other communicating sentient living beings, they're likely to be compromised because they have a survival instinct, no matter how strong their loyalty is. They have their own agenda and they can speak. With robots you run the risk of the information being extracted even after death, although during operation they will be unable. There are systems that can help alleviate the risk of tampering, but there's always a risk. Skeletons are a perfect mixture of not being able to speak, not being able to be threatened or intimidated, and communicating by supernatural means with myself.

Combat: The advantages of skeletons: Cannot be knocked back, can be reassembled by remote necromancy, guns reasonably ineffective. Disadvantages: Probably not smart enough to use guns.

Subservience: Ideally, you want no free will or motivations in your minions. Humans and similar, even primitive animals with a sense of morality, may have trouble following orders. Skeletons fit this bill, which cannot always be said for robots of the calibre I would employ, which have been known in popular media to explore the boundaries of their programming. Another thing to consider is that robots can be repurposed or shut down remotely.

Basically I thought a few things through and skeletons and the implied necromancy were decent.

I would have to choose a combined army of Slivers, from Magic: The Gathering, and the Borg, from Star Trek.

The Slivers come in myriad types, each with its own special ability, such as multiple heads, spell immunity, stronger muscles, heightened reflexes, flight, regeneration after death, and even the ability to feed me mana instead of attacking.

They are birthed by the Sliver Queen, who can hatch a new, combat-ready sliver for a mere two colorless mana, and they are led by the Sliver Overlord, who can assume control of any Slivers who happen to be separate from the Hive. The Amoeboid Changelings assist the Sliver Overlord by transforming any other creature into a Sliver, allowing the Hive to assimilate new creatures.

Best of all, however, are the Slivers' unique trait of sharing their abilities. Every Sliver shares its special ability with every other nearby Sliver ~ if you have a spell-immune Sliver and you summon a two-headed Sliver, you now have two spell-immune, two-headed Slivers.

The Borg Collective is made up of drones assimilated from almost every known species in the galaxy. They are equipped with advanced technology, ranging from strength-enhanced prosthetic limbs to ocular implants that greatly improve a drone's visual acuity, even allowing image processing effects like night vision, thermal vision, and magnification. Their best piece of tech, however, is the Borg Adaptive Shielding. After taking damage, these shields adapt to the type of damage taken, granting complete immunity to that type of damage. Each drone also possesses assimilation tubes, extendable syringe hoses that inject Borg nanites into any living creature, replacing its biological systems with technology and taking control of its brain, turning it into a new drone.

They are led by the Borg Queen. She was the first Borg, and the cortical implants in her brain store the collective knowledge and technology of every species the Borg have ever assimilated. She is an expert tactician, even possessing Captain Picard's tactical skills.

Each half of my army will have assimilated the other half, granting the Slivers superior technology and near-invincible Borg adaptive shielding, and granting the Borg access to all of the abilities and powers of nearby Slivers.

I suppose I would be the Borg Queen, leading my army of Borg Slivers to assimilate everything that ever existed.

WE ARE SLIVER OF BORG. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED.

I think the panserbjørne from His Dark Materials.

Expert craftsman and engineers which happen to be armoured polar bears. What the hell else could I need?

Lawyers. A killer team of Lawyers, hellbent on stifling creativity, imagination, and fun. A team of lawyers so good, that they can claim almost any old tosh and get away with it (Thus paying for themselves.) Also they need to have a strong sense of Health and safety.
