I can guarantee you that I will enjoy Skyrim far more than I will ever enjoy Dark Souls. Why I won't even CONSIDER getting Dark Souls but I'll get Skyrim. The one thing that makes all of IGN's asinine comments irrelevant:

I don't have a current-gen console.

Dark Souls just defaulted.

I'll take Skyrim over "Dark Souls" any day. Reason?

I can play Skyrim without having to be f**king online. I have an extremely slow, heavily limited satellite connection that shuts off about 16 hours a day. Screw DRMs. I haven't played a multiplayer game in years.
You can play Dark Souls completely offline, like the original. The online component just adds some interesting mechanics.

They're fairly different games, no? Oblivion is much more non-linear, for example.

Is there really much of a point in comparing them?

I've never played Demon's Souls, but I've seen many videos. It looks like a rather linear game that is very, very difficult. Other than the fact that both games have swords, shields, and some similar monsters, I don't think that they're very comparable.

If you're going to have a thread about IGN articles, might as well drop the IGN Generator.

IGeNerator [http://www.jocchan.com/stuff/IGeNerator/]

"Is Starcraft a Monkey Island for Adults?"

"Why Professor Layton will step on Angry Birds' face."

"Should Shenmue be remade?"

"What Mortal Kombat could learn from DmC."

"How pokemon could increase FF Vs XIII's popularity."

"What Cave Story could learn from Little King's Story."
"Why Animal Crossing will eat Crysis's face."

"What Pokemon could learn from Guitar Hero."

"Top Ten most interesting loading screens in videogames."

"What Mario could learn from Sin & Punishment."

"Is IGN a LittleBigPlanet for adults?"

I'd read all of these. I could play with this thing all day!

You know you can ply the game offline right? Are you even trying? Just s a little research can do you wonders.

Hahahaahahaha.

Wow. That is hilarious. I mean, I'm one of the few people who sorta agree with him; I'm buying Dark Souls and not Skyrim. And those features appeal to me. But that article... I was expecting a troll face at the very end, it was so purposely written. It's like IGN said "People aren't paying attention to us. We need something controversial. Let's pit 2 great series with radically different cult followings against each other! It'll be trololoolollll."

Bad article, troll author, desperate website. The only thing that makes it worthwhile is the amount of rage in the comments from butthurt fans who can't let things go. Hey, they fall for it, they deserve to be laughed at.

Children, children. Let us be calm. For these are the OPINIONS of ONE PERSON. Breathe in, breathe out. Buy the game of your choosing. This WILL NOT, I repeat, WILL NOT cause all copies of Skyrim to burst into flames.

Dry your eyes, lovelies. Everything will be okay.
that would be hilarious.

"heres your copy of skyrim OH DEAR GOD WHY IS IT ON FIRE?!?!?!"
Ha ha, I've imagined exactly that! Like the second that IGN editor hit 'send' Bethesda's studios exploded. :p

It's funny to watch people get so angry about other people's opinions. But sad at the same time! I just don't understand why they get so adamant! Variety is the spice of life! They'll both be great games in their own respects, I'm sure. Enough with the dick waving competitions! xD

Oh, really? Huh. I could have sworn that I read that you had to be online to play it. Must be the wrong game, I'm not really a console player. Forgive my ineptitude. But Skyrim all the way.

They're both not released yet. Just cause a game looks good don't mean it will be.
Just another fanboy and biased article by IGN

wow -.-

between the 2 I'd get Dark Souls regardless (elder scrolls just never doing it for me)

but really? o.o
its better cause of multiplayer? bullshit, and deep piles no less

combat being better? well fuck me i hope so, if its like demon's souls it better be tight and responsive, demon's souls wasn't a story driven game, it was action driven, and the elder scrolls games, to my knowledge of them are more plot driven

the open worldy-ness? not the size of the world but the content

DLC? well, a good game shouldn't need DLC to begin with. DLC should always be extra sprinkles of goodness to a great game, but thats just me

as for the 'our dragons are better' really -.- are we 2?

not that any of it matters. Skyrm and Dark Souls aren't really aimed at the same groups. Skyrm is an RPG for everybody, and as other elder scrolls games, more forgiving.

Demon's Souls hated you, it was hard, brutal and did everything it could to kill you(and interestingly enough wasn't really cheap about it), Dark Souls will be more of that, and this kinda hard isn't for every body, in fact 'this ***** is HARD' will probably scare (hehe >:) cowards**) a lot of gamers off

**- sorry had to XD

IGN make good money, mainly through the ad revenue from their site traffic, but also through getting paid off here and there (they are, after all, a very successful marketing channel).

Either way, I expect this article was made specifically to bring in high page views. Whether the public like what it's saying or not, it's bringing in readers, and exposing Dark Souls to more people.

... And if all else is wrong, it could be that the writer simply needed to fill a column, and is incredibly biased.

Got a problem with number 3. OPEN-WORLD MEANS LARGE, OPEN ENVIRONMENTS! If Dark Souls plays like Super Mario Bros. mashed with Metroid Prime, then count me out. Metroid Prime had a mission or objective oriented environment, which could be revisited to acquire 100% completion. Super Mario Bros. has four "levels" within a "world". So if I go to Labyrinth-1, then Labyrinth-2, get a power-up, and go back to Labyrinth-1 through a fucking Crash 3: Warped portal system ripoff called "The Nexus" (don't deny that's what it was), then Skyrim can't mop the floor with that pretentious writer soon enough.

.No.

On a final note, if a Skyrim vs Dark souls debate were to spur and it was completely biased, you'd probably still would have a shittonne of complaints as well.
No, I probably wouldn't, simply because I do not care about what a stranger on a gaming 'journalism' website has to say about a game I am looking forward to. And no, people who are mad about this article are just fanboys crying about someone who has a different opinion than them. Who cares about bias? The article title itself should make it clear that it is an opinion piece. Are you seriously implying that bias should not be present in an opinion piece? That's... um... I'm not too sure about the logistics of this. People are taking this WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too personally, probably because the implication that Skyrim might not be great is somehow offensive to them.

It was a dumb article. Call it a dumb article and move on. Don't sit around and throw a hissy fit over it, unless the contents somehow offend you.
There's a difference between being expressing opinions and being a troll. And weren't you saying how the article was objective before?

You can't really use that joke as an insult anymore, IGN Australia has begun using it:

Can we just ignore IGN? There's no reason that a professional review website would post an article like that OTHER than to piss people off and get attention. And from glancing at this thread, it seems to be working like a charm.

Because multiplayer is just what you need in a game where many plaayers will pour 100+ hours into the singleplayer...
