Well my copy of Demon's souls has yet to arrive so I can't confirm it's apparent awesomeness. Being a Morrowind fan I was really excited for Oblivion back when I was younger, it's breathtaking graphics, huge scale, improved combat system etc. That being said, neither of these games blew my mind so far, so I kinda don't understand all the hype. They both sound good on paper but....
In any case if they turn out to be great it's a win situation for all of us; something that a professional game reviewer and an RPG fan should appreciate. Biased little prick. But I guess there are worse ways of attracting attention to your article. This move guarantees him a couple of hundred hits from this site alone.

1. Both Oblivion and Morrowind had an online multiplayer component via a player made mod on the PC. Give Skyrim a few months and you'll be able to play Skyrim online as well if you really want to.
2. Both Oblivion and Morrowind had their already massive game worlds as least tripled just from player made mods on the PC. Bethesda DLC is nice, but it's player made mods that really took the cake.
3. Oblivion had dual-wielding, jump-attacks, parries, combo moves, spinning attacks, and tactical striking to make very visceral face-paced combat. (Provided through a mod on the PC).
4. Dragons lol?
~ setscale.2 epic dragon done!

The way I'd saw this article, they were trying to start a flame war to get attention. Apparently trolls have now entered the IGN office. They didn't even have the decency to put some actual thought into their arguement.

I plan on playing and loving both, sure Dark Souls will probably end up being my personal favourite for challenging but Skyrim will likely win me for immersion factor.

That said, we don't know for sure until we've all played the games and have a proper picture.

I've play about the same amount of both Demons Souls and Oblivion... Demons Souls was fun, yet hard. Oblivion was boring as hell. Plus, as I said in another thread, Skyrim will NEVER live up to all the hype. It looks to me like it will end up like Halo: decent game, but all the over hype for it and everyone talking about how it is a gift from god will bring it from a decent game to a crap game.

How can people judge games that are not even released yet?
Well, them saying it will be bad is no different from all the irate fanboys here saying it will be the greatest game ever.

Wow, they're actually making me feel bad for wanting Dark Souls. That was just... I feel kind of like I've been ear raped, through my eyes. How is that even possible?

I loved Demon's Souls and I've got Dark Souls on pre-order (Skyrim as well, by the way), but this is just ridiculous. Talk about apples and oranges. There's just no point comparing these.

IGN is brilliant in their tactics and I can't believe people on this site keep falling for it. There seems to be a weekly thread about how IGN is so biased and so wrong.

What's a good way to get traffic? Agree with everyone and say how much Skyrim is going to rock or saying that Skyrim is going to be the worst thing ever? You're playing right into their hand by not only reading what they wrote but by spreading it to other sites, saying how outraged you are about this.
I agree entirely with this.
Think about the threads that get the MOST amount of traffic on Escapist (excluding the "the book beside you is now your mother! what is it?" threads), they're always the ones with the most volatile flame wars going on, or the ones where the OP is getting hate mail.
If IGN said "Yeah, Skyrim will be great!", they'd just be doing what everyone else is doing.
By saying "FUCK SKYRIM!" they set themselves up for lots of traffic, which is almost always good.

I quit reading there. Seriously, IGN?
Yeah, thats what made me lol too.
I sort've scanned through a bit of the rest, but they already lost me on that.

IGN is to gaming what Fox is to news. Okay that may be a terrible analogy but seriously...why are we even taking that site seriously? Why are we even having this conversation?

This seems quite embarassing for dark souls. Brilliant a game as it looks, and it was certainly enough to get me intrigued, i don't think any game would like to be forced toe-to-toe with skyrim. Simply because to assume that a game could be equal to or greater than skyrim, is to charge head on to the frothy mouthed fan-boys the whole world over. So now Dark souls is going to get a lot of unwanted bad publicity, as thousands of voices cry out in union, demanding that this cocksure guttersnipe be boycotted.

Even the non fan boys will say "sure it looks good, but i don't think it's as good as skyrim". Which of course means that the general opinion of dark souls is knocked down a notch.

I think this was quite un-kind of IGN, who i imagine would know exactly well this would go down with most folks. If anything it could be seen as some pretty damned crafty manipulation IN FAVOUR of skyrim.

Silly site. Comparing games that, when it comes down to it, are, oh I don't know, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. RPG they may both be, but they're completely different games. I'm rather looking forward to both of them personally. But seriously, IGN? Seriously? Do you go looking for bad publicity?

So extra features = bad now, eh? Wow. I never would have dreamed that anyone could say that a developer adding something to their game would ever make it worse than a game that does not have that feature.
If adding that feature detracts from the single-player experience yes, hands down. And that is all they said, that they couldn't do it without hurting the single-player.

At no point did I say that extra features is bad, in fact if you reference my post I added how I would like to see it added.

My previous post on page 2:
I for one have never wanted multi-player mucking up my elder scrolls experience. I feel that it would end up falling into the same realm as Fable 3 co-op. Since it doesn't make sense for there to be 2 prophesied "the one"s in a story, they would throw you in as a sidekick. I enjoy all the work and time put into the epic single player experience. And taking resources away from that just to add in token multi-player... no thanks.

Having said that, what I would like to see is some specially made co-op modes. Where you and a friend have to complete certain objectives in a closed course. Infiltrating a castle to assassinate a dignitary, or clearing out a bandit cave. Something like that, but it would have to be a crafted thing specially made for co-op.

So the simple fact that Dark Souls is a one-time payment of 60 dollars, while Skyrim will run more than 60 over its lifetime, is not at all a point in Dark Soul's favor? Hm, well okay... whatever you say. That makes no sense to me...
No, the simple fact that we don't know what the DLC will or will not add, we cannot decide at this time if it's good or bad.

As I posted earlier:
"DLC or lack thereof is not inherently good or bad either. DLC can be a way to extend replay-ability or add onto an existing story. And DLC can be simple trinkets or dodads that should have been included in the original box."

I think this is a ploy on IGN's part because we know everybody there is most likely getting a free copy of Skyrim so they can talk shit about it all they want. They talk out their ass build unwarranted hatred for Dark Souls so more of the rabid Elder Scrolls fanboys can come out their caves, rant all day about how its better and all that crap.

Dark Souls is gonna be good because it's From Software and they do combat right don't count out these Japanese designers. Demons Souls was a very solid game in it's own right. It was only hard if you played recklessly, which in most games you'll get your ass kicked if you screw up anyway so there's nothing new right there. I'm glad for once they're making an effort to make Dark Souls harder because if you're smart you can abuse flaws in Demons Souls' AI to net you easy wins hell it's a reason why now its very dangerous to invade and be invaded most people that been playing this for a few years are crazy good and have defined builds.

Skyrim is gonna be OK yet I was never really into Elder Scrolls to begin with and from the hype their's nothing in Skyrim that I can't get from Dark Souls. So I'll save myself 60$ and pass on it. I'll watch a Skyrim LP or something on YT and or J/Twitch TV.

Even if these claims were legit, there are still 5 really easy counters regarding the author's points, especially if you take the history of the previous ES installments into account.

1. Mods.

2. Why buy DLC when you can download Mods?

3. Sounds like something Mod-able.

4. Combat? There's a Mod for that.

5. ...If you really insist on making that argument, I'm sure someone will mod the hell out of that too.

There's really no way to compare the two when they'll both end up being wildly different from each other after 2 months past release.

I'm more interested in Dark Souls then Skyrim but yeah, sounds like IGN was righting an ad then making any sort of valid comparison. I mean, they missed the most glaring issue of any Bethesda game: bugs. That's the main reason I'm absolutely uninterested in Skyrim, it WILL be a buggy mess. I'd much rather get a finished game then some half-baked knock off of a game made six years ago.

Well, yeah. Knowing IGN they probably couldn't care less about either game and are really just LOLing at the amount of traffic they're getting from that article instead.

If this article had been: "Five Reasons Skyrim will top Dark Souls." Why do I feel like no one would be angry at all?
