And warn me if you want too about double posting, but I do feel the need to say that "You can't spell ignorant without IGN" isn't funny anymore.

Amusingly, after reading so many comments on this same article all over the place, it seems the biggest group of people flipping out about Dark Souls beating Skyrim seem to be PC gamers... a system Dark Souls isn't even being released for, or people that never played Demon Souls... a group of people that have no idea what they're even talking about.

The bottom line of the whole things is very simple. Neither are released yet, so no one has any solid ground for arguing which is better. IGN really knows how to pad that site traffic, eh?

I've preordered both, but if Skrim is as sparse as Oblivion was, or with loads of copy and paste dungeons, well at least I spent $150 on a pretty artbook and nice dragon statuette to go with my loads of other dragon statuettes.

Dragons FTW!

Actually, the article is probably right.
Admittedly, TES games are already huge, but, unless Bethesda really put thought into it, most of the dungeons are copy/paste affairs with little to no relevance to the surrounding world. On the other hand, if Demon's Souls is any indication, Dark Souls should have an extremely well designed world (ala metroid and castlevania - like Demon's Souls) where exploration rewards the player with shortcuts and powerful items (cough*not pointless random loot*cough).
The rest of your points are valid enough, even if I do disagree with them, but I just feel like talking about this one in particular a little more in depth.

If you did sink so many hours into Oblivion, could you really say the dungeons were all just copy pasted? I admit that the scenery and most of the forest, mountain areas were extremely repetitive and control+v'ed, but the dungeons were amazing to me.

Every single one I went into felt different and fun. I remember one in particular, Block Rock Caverns. It was unlabeled, had no affiliation with a quest, it was just a random cave south of some city.

But inside that dungeon, there were 3 secret switches. The game gave no real clues they were there besides a few cryptic dialogue boxes from NPC's. When you flipped them, you got to enter a third area where some unique ghost pirate enemies waited, along with some shiny treasure.

The point I'm trying to make is that events like these kept me searching in Oblivion. There was almost never an end to them. I still think there are a few caves I haven't found yet, probably with some interesting things I never got to discover.

If Skyrim is promising an expansion on the world of Oblivion, that probably means that dungeons like this will be even more prominent. That searching alone will probably give me more hours of enjoyment and exploration than any other game I can think of.

wow -.-

between the 2 I'd get Dark Souls regardless (elder scrolls just never doing it for me)

but really? o.o
its better cause of multiplayer? bullshit, and deep piles no less

combat being better? well fuck me i hope so, if its like demon's souls it better be tight and responsive, demon's souls wasn't a story driven game, it was action driven, and the elder scrolls games, to my knowledge of them are more plot driven

the open worldy-ness? not the size of the world but the content

DLC? well, a good game shouldn't need DLC to begin with. DLC should always be extra sprinkles of goodness to a great game, but thats just me

as for the 'our dragons are better' really -.- are we 2?

not that any of it matters. Skyrm and Dark Souls aren't really aimed at the same groups. Skyrm is an RPG for everybody, and as other elder scrolls games, more forgiving.

Demon's Souls hated you, it was hard, brutal and did everything it could to kill you(and interestingly enough wasn't really cheap about it), Dark Souls will be more of that, and this kinda hard isn't for every body, in fact 'this ***** is HARD' will probably scare (hehe >:) cowards**) a lot of gamers off

**- sorry had to XD
I still think that beating Ninja Gaiden:Black on Master Ninja difficulty was a TRUE feat of strength.

Not badmouthing Demon Souls or anything, that game was quite a beast, but I don't think you've felt true frustration until you've tried to beat that unholy game on its hardest difficulty setting.

I'll take Skyrim over "Dark Souls" any day. Reason?

I can play Skyrim without having to be f**king online. I have an extremely slow, heavily limited satellite connection that shuts off about 16 hours a day. Screw DRMs. I haven't played a multiplayer game in years.
You can play Dark Souls completely offline, like the original. The online component just adds some interesting mechanics.
Oh, really? Huh. I could have sworn that I read that you had to be online to play it. Must be the wrong game, I'm not really a console player. Forgive my ineptitude. But Skyrim all the way.
I primarily play on my PC, but I still find Dark Souls more promising than Skyrim. Why? Oblivion was a disappointment compared to Morrowind. Writing and design was painfully sloppy in a lot of sections, and I'm not going to let a bunch of pre-release hype make me forget that.

Despite its primarily console origins, Dark souls/Demon's souls are incredibly competent dungeon crawler with great atmosphere and combat mechanics. The biggest departure from Demon's souls for dark souls that traversing between areas in seamless, making the entire game open to exploring.

I don't want my ass handed to me with extreme difficulty, Dark Souls. No seriously, I hate games that are just exceedingly difficult for the sake of being difficult like Demon's Souls. Skyrim will be more fun for me, I don't care if I'm called a pussy or something. I play video games to relax, damnit. If I do however want a challenge, I'll just play Ninja Gaiden on master ninja mode.

DLC
Can we stop complaining about DLC? So what if there's plans for DLC already? There will always be ideas that don't make it into the game because they don't have the budget or time or whatever, and DLC is a way for publishers to deliver the content they wanted, after they don't have the pressure of releasing the game, or the sales bolster their budget.
Don't forget cutting content out of the final version to sell to players on Day 1 or later!
Hell, Bethesda was one of the pioneers of that racket!
(Horse Armor was on the original Oblivion disc, yet was marketed on XBL for a few bucks. You paid to unlock content you technically already possessed!)

I haven't played nearly enough RPGs to form a legit opinion on this, and I'm probably not going to get either of these, but IGN's logic just sounds terrible, I honestly don't know why people trust them.

so an online pc game
um... Dark Souls isn't a PC Game, and also it isn't it's most compelling feature. Though I will say it is a good feature since it combines single-player and Multiplayer seemlessly in a very creative way. But that's not all it has.

On a final note, if a Skyrim vs Dark souls debate were to spur and it was completely biased, you'd probably still would have a shittonne of complaints as well.
No, I probably wouldn't, simply because I do not care about what a stranger on a gaming 'journalism' website has to say about a game I am looking forward to. And no, people who are mad about this article are just fanboys crying about someone who has a different opinion than them. Who cares about bias? The article title itself should make it clear that it is an opinion piece. Are you seriously implying that bias should not be present in an opinion piece? That's... um... I'm not too sure about the logistics of this. People are taking this WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too personally, probably because the implication that Skyrim might not be great is somehow offensive to them.

It was a dumb article. Call it a dumb article and move on. Don't sit around and throw a hissy fit over it, unless the contents somehow offend you.
You seem to care enough to come to a gaming thread on a different website and complain about strangers complaining about a stranger though? I did not refer to you personally, I was simply saying that an influx of people would complain, much in the same way your "Bethesda Fanboys" have complained.

Also, I consider myself a fan of the Elder Scrolls series, I believe some points raised in this article were wrong. I have the freedom to retort these statements raised in the article and express my opinion. I don't see why the people who do this disgust and aggravate you so much?

As far as I can tell, Skyrim will kick arse sales wise simply because its more accessible.
All I ever hear about Demon's Souls is how hard it is.
Not everyone plays games for the challenge. To some people, myself included, the kind of "challenge" games like this present is counter productive to the fact that we're playing in our leisure time.

So whilst I'm sure Dark Souls will be great and popular, its still going to be aimed at a more specific audience.

IMO: I like both games equally, they have their own drawbacks and go-to's. Granted Skyrim isn't out yet so you can't really compare.

OT: Skyrim isn't out so they can't compare. As for multiplayer, DS is multiplayer integrated to be singleplayer. Elder Scrolls with co-op just wouldnt work because it's too much for a system to process on that scale if you ask me. And Elder Scrolls games are better enjoyed alone so you can get the full nine yards on the world and story, etc.

PS: I know PCs and consoles would be capable of handling the game (look at Dead Island) but it would have to be down-sized to the point of it being unrecognisable for the actual game.

In conclusion, IGN is stupid.
