No, that's screamo-death metal-crappy-assitude music. :D

I hate when people flame me because I play Guitar Hero and Halo, own a 360, and use Facebook constantly. Apparently I'm everything that people here hate.
Make that the both of us...

I have a much more awesome reason to hate rap music....
I just don't like it, nor do I like most of the people who listen to it so far into my life.

Which is true about this generation. It IS all about guns, women, "the hood", jail and so forth.
But rap and hiphop before 50 cent etc was fairly enjoyable. And I mean way before that. Like, 2pac.
Now I mostly just listen to rock and metal.

What -I- don't get, is the older generation and their inability to listen to anyone not over the age of 40 when it comes to computers and internet.

It seems like my brother lets 4chan affect his opinions pretty easily. At one time he was an anime lover like I am but a few days after he started going to 4chan suddenly its gay and i'm a weeaboo, whatever the hell that is.
It means someone who is completely and utterly obsessed with all things Japan. Given you're avatar isn't anime or something equally stereotypically Japanese, he is incorrect in his assumption.

EDIT: It should be noted I don't find people with anime avatars to be weaboos, I'm merely pointing out that the poster can't be all that obsessed if his avatar isn't anime.
At one time I did have an anime based avatar but changed it to my current avatar after witnessing the awesomeness that was Doomsday Arcade, and I wouldn't say i'm obsessed with anime, if anything its video games i'm obsessed with considering I spent almost every second thinking about and playing them.

Now i'll give another example so this post isn't just wasting thread space.
OT: All of my friends are always going on about how the PS3 "has no games" or "its just an expensive blue-ray player" and it really pisses me off. They're writing off an entire console just because it doesn't have as many exclusives as the 360, and all the while i'm sitting there slapping them in the face with Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, and LittleBigPlanet.

I showed my 7 year old niece (her daughter) and her a violent snippet of Ninja Schrolls. Soon changed her fucking mind.

Jumping on the rock/metal music train but with a slight alteration. Let me explain (gonna be a bit wordy);

Having just been shopping with my best friend we get onto the train to get home. I'd bought a copy of Metal Hammer, one of my favourite magazines and we were looking through it. After a while, a woman found her way over to the seat next to me and almost immediately I could sense that she was reading over my shoulder. I chose to ignore it and carry on. Then I heard her tut. I turned the page to see an image of Nergal, vocalist of Behemoth. Now I'm neither here nor there on that band but I was still saddened by his recent news of being diagnosed with cancer.

All of a sudden this fat finger jabbed into his face and a voice spoke. "You know all of this is caused by the Devil? All of this music and all of these people are sinners." I couldn't believe it, and neither could my friend. I dunno if things have changed and I missed it but in the UK people don't generally like to talk to one another if we don't know each other. I looked up and said that it was her opinion, but I'd rather she didn't tell me about it. As we continued to read I noticed that she was muttering to herself; I think I caught "Oh Lord Jesus...". She jabbed Nergal in the face again and said "This is wrong. You must not get involved with these bad people. He will go to hell." I think on the spot and tell her to shut up and mention his condition.

She said the following; "That is his punishment from God."

I think me and my friend disturbed a few passengers for about ten minutes while we argued with her until she finally got up and moved. I have nothing against religion and those who follow it, but I want nothing to do with it. These zealots who feel the need to tell you that you're doing things wrong (apparently) really get on my nerves. They can't see the world past their goddamn Bibles.

One guy I know at school immediately starts loudly insulting any game that is mentioned that isn't Halo. He just goes on and on, right up until some one asks him if he's even played the game, then he usually gets really quiet.

I care very little what other people think of my tastes. If someone doesn't like what I do, I don't call them ignorant. Different perception maybe.
Now, when someone gets in my face about the things I like and comes up with BS reasons why I shouldn't like it, then they become ignorant. Because they're attempting to change me, and the only person who can change me is myself.
On the other side of things, I don't down people for what they like, its their life to do with as the please as long as it doesn't mess with mine or anyone else's.

"Would you like to try out 'X?'"
"No way, 'X' sucks!"
"Why, I love 'X!'"
"I just know it."
Had this conversation all too many times with certain people.

Psh, you're fine. I also play guitar and enjoy eminem, alongside everything you do.

Just don't say it to the vocal people, they get annoyed when people have different tastes.

Anyway, my example? Fanboys. All of them.

In school, one of my partners wouldn't help me with a pretty big science project. Why?
Cause I don't think that Halo is the best game ever.

I listened to rap for five years, guess what? It's all of the above, 98% of rap is about banging bitches and spending stupid amounts of money on stupid shit while a generic beat blasts in the background. Also, all music with words is poetry.

I've personally never bumped into someone who is blatantly ignorant about stuff for no apparent reason, but I'm not a really out going person, I tend to not speak to people and only complain when something I feel is really wrong gets said. (IE "God is the best thing ever!" me "pshh, someone's never played an Xbox")
Cough cough irony.

I find it silly when people say things like rap is just guns 'n' bitches. It's like saying all rock is boring cause all you see are the Coldplays, the Nickelbacks and the Trains of the world.

P.S. All gaming is stupid cuz itz just shootin people in tha face ova an ova.

Before I started listening to rap, I had most of the opinions that I see guys here spouting off whenever the topic is raised. However, when I properly started exploring it, it took me maybe a couple of months before pretty much all my misconceptions were overturned. I don't see how you could have been listening to it for 5 years and still think that way.

To this I would say 'how can you not like "it" when "it" refers to a very wide range of genres?". If someone was to say that they didn't like rock music, their hate would have to include everything from the Beatles to the Ramones to Pink Floyd. While I can get them not liking any individual group for whatever reason, within the genre as a whole they are bound to find acts that they like.

First of all, different genres need to be assessed on different criteria. Saying that rap is bad singing and is based around repetative beats is not only wrong, but missing the point. It would be like criticising Mozart for his lack of guitar solos. Good rap is all about flow, complex rhymes, clever word play and storytelling ability. If you think that DJing is easy or boring, then look at this documentary on why you are wrong. Oh yea, and rap groups are increasingly using live bands. These guys currently work as Jimmy Fallon's house band.

Secondly, I realise, that songs primarily concerned with the issues of young, lower class black men are unlikely to strike a chord with those who frequent a videogames forum. I mean that would be like expecting Jay Z to be a big fan of Grizzly Bear. Oh wait. You can enjoy a peice of music regardless of subject matter. I don't see anyone complaining about, say, Nick Cave writing an a whole album of songs about murdering people, Big Black writing an album called "Songs About Fucking" or the Velvet Underground writing songs about taking lots of drugs. But somehow, when its in a rap song, it becomes offensive. I personally find, for example, NWA quite a refreshing change from all the angsty white guy music I listen to.
Oh yea, and I almost feel it goes without saying that nowhere near as much rap as most people claim is about "guns, bitches and bling", at least not the sort of rap that anyone actually into rap listens to. The first rap group that I got into (I'll admit, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I would been on the side of the majority of this thread) was De La Soul, as their whole aestetic was the complete opposite to what I learned to expect from rap, with a jazz influenced sound and raps about everything from awkward first loves to surreal walks in the park, talking to animals. I sortof started at the left-field and worked my way right.
To summarise, there is a large amount of rap that is not about "guns, bitches and bling" and even if it is, that doesn't mean that its necessarily bad.

Thirdly, Sturgeons Law. Yea, there is a fairly large amount of rap which is shit. On the other hand, there is a large amount of any genre which is shit. Judging rap by 50 Cent is like judging fantasy novels by Stephanie Mayer, they may be popular (although, I don't really know anyone that listens to 50 Cent any more), but don't let them taint the genre as a whole.

Oh, and lastly, can people please stop saying that all good rap was released in the 80s/90s and since then its been crap, especially if you are going to hold up the Sugarhill Gang, MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice as your examples. Have you listened to the fish verse of Rappers Delight? I forgive you for missing it, because its about 6 minutes into that song, but its one of the most baffling things ever committed to tape. Even though they allegedly coined the term "rap", they were by no means the first rap group. They were a largely manufactured group, to wring money out of rising rap scene. MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice released one decent song each, both of rap over barely edited samples of Superfreak and Under Pressure respectively and don't hold a candle to other rappers or groups of that era: Run DMC, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Eric B and Rakim, Beastie Boys, Boogie Down Productions, etc.
There's been plenty of good rap this side of the millenium. 5 of Metacritics Top 15 albums are rap, 10 of the top 50. And that doesn't take into account some worthy underground records that people here have recommended (Sage Francis' Personal Journals, Aesop Rock's Labour Days), but which didn't make it onto the metacritic rankings. While we may not have quite had something as good as say, Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Beastie Boys' Pauls Boutique or De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising, we have had OutKast's Stankonia, Dizzee Rascal's Boy in da Corner, Jay Z's the Blueprint, Kanye West's Late Registration and College Dropout, The Roots' Phrenology and Im sure plenty others which I have missed.

Sometimes my partners will look at a book or something I recommended and go 'not for me' by the end of the first page. It enrages me no end, but I guess it's their call, I don't know why it feels so personal when it really oughtn't.

I find it annoying when people say things like, "I hate anime," as if anime is a genre. And it's not. It's a style of animation. That's like someone saying, "I hate Live Action films," or, "I hate TV shows. All of them. They're all the same."

And I'm not even someone who watches a lot of anime myself, so it's not like I'm a fangirl or anything. I just find it bizarre that people group completely unrelated series together purely because of the country they're from.

I also find myself having to bite my tongue when people react badly to someone giving a negative review to a game they like. Well, what do you want the reviewer to do? They're not lying to spite you. They're talking about the experience they personally had with a game. That's their job. If they didn't like a game, then their best estimation is that other people might have the same problems with a game they did, and to convey that through their opinion.

With something like a video game, there's no way of saying something is objectively good or bad (beyond obvious things like being glitched or broken). Everyone's going to have their own reactions to it. And that's all any of us can judge things by.

Do I care if someone considers my personal favourite game of all time to be the worst game they've ever played? No. Not at all. They obviously just didn't enjoy the game, or they like different things than I do. They're not wrong. They just reacted differently. And the fact that I had a good experience with a game doesn't mean I'm objectively right in calling it the best game ever.

It's as simple as that. /rant

I agree. Video games are all just violent sex simulators with no educational value whatsoever. Anybody who plays video games are mass-murderers and rape-layers just waiting to happen.
