So IGN posted their top 10 games of the past decade. They first went through and did each individual year, then took the 10 "best games" of each year and put them all in their own top 10. Here's what they came up with:

10. Uncharted 2 (2009)
9. Battlefield 1942 (2002)
8. Okami (2006)
7. Fallout 3 (2008)
6. Counterstrike (2000)
5. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
4. GTA III (2001)
3. Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic (2003)
2. Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
1. Half-Life 2 (2004)

I must be totally missing something here. I stopped playing Half Life 2 halfway through because of how god-awful boring it was. Sure, there was an impressive physics engine, and lots of inside jokes that only people who played the first Half-Life series would get (which I didn't, so I missed all those), but after that, meh. The guns were stereotypical FPS fare with the exception of the gravity gun, which wasn't even that great... the storyline was lame, and every two levels you're made to do a long, tedious, pain-in-the-ass "riding" mission on an ATV or water jet thing, both of which control like semi trailers full of bricks. I was so unimpressed that I stopped playing it.

Shadow of the Colossus, ok with top 5... #2? Dunno about that. KoToR is great but it's not the best game of its kind. GTA III should be higher. It basically founded the sandbox genre, so trade it with KoToR or Shadows. Galaxy, I dunno. It's a great game and all, but is *another* Mario game really revolutionary? Counterstrike can suck it. I was an Enemy Territory man. Fallout 3 should be higher. So should Uncharted 2, from everything I hear; I haven't played it and can't say. Same with Battlefield and Okami.

Notably missing is World of Warcraft. Someone fucked up; it's the most successful, most widely-played, most lucrative online game *of all time.* Think about this: it came out maybe six years ago, and STILL over 12 million people actively play it. I dare you to find me a higher credential. Everyone was apparently busy blowing Gordon Freeman in 2004, though, so he beat WoW.

That's how I feel :) I'm not happy with the list at all.

TL;DR - IGN is kinda bad.

I dont like IGN anymore. I hate them tbh after they gave MAG 7.0 and Mass Effect 2 9.6
Anywho
Counterstrike (Which you've spelt wrong, just saying) should not be on there, hell no.
Half-Life 2 should be on there, sure, but not at the top, definetly not.
Hubilub is going to say Shadow of the colossus should be #1
Super Mario Galaxy wasnt all that great to me atleast.

hmm... other than uncharted, a very... Un-IGN-ish list.

Shadow of the colossus, half life, and Okami completely makes me respect it. damn. I was going to bash them so hard!

ign's reviews are largely predictable and unreliable, hence their "top 10" list is worthless. they give bad reviews to good games and good reviews to bad games, IMO. ign's reviews are basically based on popularity.

Uncharted and Fallout are good. Don't get why everyone loves Half-life and I haven't played the others.

The problem here is, for the past decade, there have been well over ten oustanding games. So any list comprised of only ten entries is going to leave off something.

Oh, and Half-life 2 bored me to tears in 2004, as well as presently, nice physics though...

If you want to go with most widely-played game of all time, then Farmville needs to be on the list. 76,677,249 Monthly Active Users.

Personally, looking at that list, I'd say it's pretty damn decent.

HL2 is there instead of WoW, cause WoW only managed to lift off to stardom 2 years after.

If anything The Burning Crusade should be there. It was the turning point from good MMO to Supahstar MMO.

All that and that Rome:Total War was better.

I am in agreement with most of your analysis, especially about Half-Life 2 and how fantastically dull it is. However, I expect the Valve fanboys to storm the topic and explain to you how you don't "get it."

The HL2 story was not "lame".

And there's no Mafia on the list, which makes it totally worthless - its redeemed by the inclusion of KotOR though.

I love that game beyond belief.

I think KotOR is too high up. It has a good story, but has some problems (like the boring and repetitive combat). Also, I think Super Mario Galaxy is overrated. It's a great game, but not THAT great. Mostly because it's way too easy. I got all the stars once, and only some of the prankster comets were challenging. I won most of them on the first try.

I didn't expect to agree with it, and i don't, but is that really a deal? I mean, how could have possibly made a definitive, non-objective (probably not the right word, you know what i mean) list? No-one will be satisfied.
Of course, its equally ludicrous to say that publications shouldn't make such list. Their business is in part to recommend games and identify talent.
My idea: Increase it to 15 top games to account for more error in opinion about 'great' games; and don't rank them, as nothing good will come of saying one game is definitely better than another. Especially if they're two different genres.

Wow... the same site that said ME1 was the biggest leap in the RPG genre in the last decade and also claimed it is the best Xbox 360 game EVER and it did not even make the list... I never understand these sites.

First rule of Videogame related media #1: IGN is absolutely shit.

Any opinion they give is invalid instantly.

I must have missed something here.

KOTOR is overrated.
Okami is overrated.
Grand Theft Auto was innovative, but ultimately overrated.

Where is WoW?
Where is Halo: Combat Evolved?
Where is Call of Duty 4?

These are 3 of the most influential games of the decade, and they get shunned. I know I know, opinion is opinion, yada yada.

Well, seeing as their choice for that year was neither an RPG nor an Xbox 360 game, it kinda makes sense, doesn't it?

They said that? Like seriously meaning that?
