Ya their list kind of sucks but in all honest, their reviews are pretty accurate. They are rarely more than 5% off of what the overall medacritic average. I saw someone complain about them giving Mass Effect 2 a 9.6 and Mag a 7.0. If you look at the metacritic averages for both of these games Mass Effect has over 80 reviews and the average has come to 96%. That's very accurate. Mag only has 30 some reviews so far but it doesn't look like it's going to move to far from it's 75 average. IGN was 5% lower on that one but seriously, there were a couple of reviews that gave it 60%.

Honestly, IGN is my most trusted game site. Gamespot fires employees if they give a game that's paying them a lot of money a bad review (Kane and Lynch incident). Gametrailers, I feel is biased towards the 360. IGN is usually very accurate.

There top ten list kind of sucked though. Oblivion should have been on it. It's by far my favorite game of all time!

Halo: Combat Evolved? What?! What did that do that say.. HL2 didnt do?
It made FPS accessible to console players.
No, id say Golden Eye did that with a controller not near made for FPS's
And timesplitters
Let me rephrase: Mainstream console players. Only a handful in my college days were familiar with Goldeneye. But most did Halo.

Half life 2 is a game that many people enjoy, and I think that a lot of people who are in on it might be working there, so that's why it's number one, a fun game, but it's a game that's above average, but not Number 1 material.

Shadow of the Colossus does deserve it's praise. It's simple, but at the same time has more depth than many games out there. It gives small hints and leaves the rest up to the player, it makes you think, but is still fun, it deserves 2, mabey even 1

KOTOR is a great game, but between 1 and 2, while I liked Taris more than Peragus and the Citidel station to start, I think the core of KOTOR 2 is stronger, building on the solid KOTOR 1 and adding solidly on it

GTA may have brought in the Sandbox era we live in, but I have to say, it's hard to give the spot to. Mabey it's just me, but I found GTA boring, and couldn't get into it at all...it was a pile to me but that's me...

Galaxy being on the top 10? While yes, it is fun, there are a LOT of other games that deserve praise over it...

Counterstrike may be an online sensation, but there are better out there and better done nowadays, but it might be that I'm not an oldie online

Fallout 3? That's a huge suprise. It's a fun game, with a lot going for it, but on the overall list I can't see it beating out a lot of other games out there that are better...it's by no means bad, just beaten out by more than only 6 games

I haven't played the last 3, but I will say that Resident Evil 4, Portal (or just the Orange Box), and a few other games deserve to be on the list. RE4 deserves the top 5, if not #1, because it took a dying franchise and brought life to it, reinventing gameplay like gamers have never seen. Portal is a good game as well because it brought new dynamics to gameing, being a short game with a simple plot and let us go with it. Like Shadow of the Colussus, it was simple but deep. And I have to say that Call of Duty 4:Modern Warfare belongs at least near the end or mabey the honorary 11 spot, because it gave us a compelling story with solid gameplay, likable characters, and set things closer to home, again bringing the Call of Duty franchise a memorable hit that reinvented it. It also gave us a powerful online experience that COD:MW2 has polished to a shine even more.

As for Half Life 2; I really can't say. I can't really express why that game is so great. snip
It doesn't get boring because of the constant action, high speed and (most importantly) great variety. Story is not very good, even though I respect the way the developers TELL it. Unfortunately, I cannot play it any more, because Steam is so fucked. sigh

@OT: You don't agree with a Top 10 list. Shocker. I don't agree with theirs, and I don't agree with yours. WoW deserves no spot in the top 100, neither does Enemy Territory. Statments like "*gamexy* should be higher" are among the most pointless of all. Who cares? If you are an individual, make your own list and worship that, stop sucking on others'

ign's reviews are largely predictable and unreliable, hence their "top 10" list is worthless. they give bad reviews to good games and good reviews to bad games, IMO. ign's reviews are basically based on popularity.
Mag has been extremely popular amongst the PS3 audience yet it only got a 7. They are always one of the first sites to get their reviews out so it's not like anyone besides reviewers have even played them yet. Look at Medacritic, by the time a game has 60+ reviews, you'll notice that IGN's reviews is pretty close to it. IGN is quite accurate. Just curious, what game site do you trust if not IGN? I mostly use IGN, Gamespot, Gametrailers, and Gamesradar (ya I know they hand out tens like their nothing, I only use them for the comedy). I definitely prefer IGN over all of them.

Definitely, and Perfect Dark moreso. But what I was getting at was the it widened the genre to a very lucrative demographic.

Where is Max Payne 2? Seriously...put that game in any decade, past, present or future and it'll be the best game of that decade.
I'm currently learning how to use GIMP, thanks to Vaude, anyway, its my mission to create Max Payne's cover art with Sexual Harassment Panda instead of Max...

you won a golden biscuit. ME2 got a 9.6 and the first one was "the biggest leap in the RPG in the decade" while MAG got a 7.

i havent played ME2, but the first one was rubbish, and could replace the ground in Gluttony for all i cared.

MW2 got a 10 on graphics, while it was nothing revolutionary and the shadows were 4 times worse than World at War´s (they were actually pixelated).

no review ive seen does the game justice.

Fallout 3, why? Why not Morrowind or Oblivion?

Also, where is my delicious Diablo II? It was released '00? Right?

Even rest of the list isn't something that I would pick, but most of them are pretty good and innovative games.

2. Fallout 3 kicks OBLIVIONs ass, not morrowind though
3. 00 would be 11 years ago?

Was there ever a more generic game than HL2 really safe because it was hard to fuck up. I would put a more ambitious failure on a higher pedestal the gravity gun really wasn't that big an inovation to me. The original Red Faction's geomod felt more next gen to me and that came out the same year as the original hl.

I must have missed something here.

KOTOR is overrated.
Okami is overrated.
Grand Theft Auto was innovative, but ultimately overrated.

Where is WoW?
Where is Halo: Combat Evolved?
Where is Call of Duty 4?

These are 3 of the most influential games of the decade, and they get shunned. I know I know, opinion is opinion, yada yada.
Aren't they to overrated? Like REALLY overrated? Like REALLY REALLY REALLY overrated. Kotor was actually very interesting and what the hell is okami?
Well, opinion is opinion and all that, but no I don't think they are. They became so popular for a reason: they're really damn good. The games I mentioned as overrated are good, but I don't think "Game of the Decade" material when I hear Okami or KOTOR.

We could be here for years deciding our top ten games of this decade, even then about 49% would disagree with it in some way, not to mention the fan boys (and gals), who will stick Halo as the greatest thing to ever grace this planet (sorry, it's just an easy target).

The title of this thread says it all, it's IGN's top ten, no doubt your top ten differs greatly. This is just ones person/companies choices.

As for the people who don't get HL 2's popularity, somebody on this great forum said to me, it seems generic now because so many elements have been taken from it.

Ah, you've noticed how I mention the game in every thread then?...whether it's relevent or not? I don't know what "GIMP" and "Vaude" is, but I'd love to see the outcome.
