I'm bored of gaming

I really am. I never thought I'd see the day, but here it is. I cannot be bothered to play video games anymore.

It began a few months ago, when my habits began to change. Usually I'd come home, stick whatever I was currently playing through in the Xbox, and spend a few hours with it. More and more, though, I found myself coming home, looking at my games collection, and thinking "meh". On weekends I used to wake up early and get a solid few hours of playing time, whereas now I'm more likely to watch crap TV instead. The last game I played all the way through was Mass Effect 2, which managed to keep my attention throughout. Since then, my rental company has sent me a ton of other games, most of which I've played for a few hours and sent back, regardless of how fun they were.

The real kicker was Red Dead Redemption, a game I'd been anticipating for a long time. Hell, I even pre-ordered it, which I've never done for a game before. I love the game - it's fun, incredibly atmospheric, and the story is good enough to keep my attention. At first I was doing everything; treasure hunting, random events, poker games, the ambient quest thingies like hunting or flower picking. Unfortunately, around the point I opened up the third area of the map, I just stopped playing. Occasionally I'll pop the disc in and attempt a mission, or kill some wolves, but I'll soon be bored again.

The thing is, I still want to play games. I'm still getting games from my rental service (Brutal Legend and Aliens vs Predator currently, both of which I've played briefly and turned off) and I still get the urge to play my games, but whenever I try my attention wanes. I still haunt these forums to talk about games, and read the gaming news for things I'm looking forward to, but that's as far as it goes.

I don't know what to do about this. I've become a gamer who doesn't game. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's natural progression. You probably played to the point that you wore yourself off from feeling anything towards them.

Just pass on it for a while and give it a shot again.

I get bored of gaming often. So I usually fall back to my PSP or DS, or buy another PC game to delve into. I find replaying a game from a long time ago often relights my interests.

Stop playing NOW.

Seriously, just walk away. Give me your pump, the oil, the gasoline, and the whole compound, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror. I await your answer. You have a full day to decide.

...wait.

I was thinking the same thing, until I bought FFIX and MGS off the psn, now I remember what gaming was all about

Ether go buy a new game or do something new for a few days. It will come back in its own time.

You get bored of gaming, so you...keep gaming? Interesting approach.

I'd quite like to try playing an older game, and I even found my old N64 in the attic when I moved house. Unfortunately I have no games for it, and no shops nearby that sell them. Before you suggest buying them online, I don't do that. I don't trust myself not to get drunk and buy a submarine or something...

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm scared nonetheless. I don't have a compound to give you! Will you accept half a pack of gum, some 3D glasses and a mug? (I keep strange things on my desk)

The thing is, I do still feel something for them. The longing to play is still there, and I'm still interested in upcoming games, I just can't force myself to play them. It isn't that I've burned out, more that I just can't keep myself interested while playing.

I thought I was too. I'd go to pop in any of my games, even for Trophies (And I'm a trophy WHORE), then I go.... Fmeh.

Try Playing an MMO. AS weird as it sounds, its mixing it up enough for most people. Don't stay long and don't pay (I do not condone Illegal Downloads, But you should play WoW on a Free to Play server). But go. Have Fun. Come back to consoles and go... Fuck this is actually pretty engaging!

Yeah, it happened to me.

What I do is buy games that sound interesting & stockpile them for months or a yers or so, then I celebrate Christmas & Birthday togeather & go to town on the games when the urge comes back from it's extended vacation.

Another thing to do is play lots of casual games until you're brain is screaming for something with more depth. You could also just switch genres. If you usually play shooters, play RPGs instead.

Now is the time to indulge in other hobbies. I stockpile manga, Deadpool, Batman, anime, & nostolgic TV series boxed sets for when the video games urge takes leave.

If you're truly bored of gaming, please, buy a submarine and invite me along...

I know I tend to veer off gaming whenever I'm suffering from severe spite - like when I jus tcan't defeat that final boss or I'm stuck under heavy fire or just can't win on Live due to eveyone suddenly acquiring god-like talent. Now that I write that down I realise I must really hate losing, hehe!

But that's me. Play whenever you feel you want to, not because you feel inclined to due to the self-titled 'gamer' persona, otherwise you'll end up running yourself into a dreary pit when you could be spending your time excersicing or baking or something...

I used to have this same feeling. My saviour was shows. I just mass watched shows, and even watched 8 of them one after another. Soon, I just felt like playing again, movies also can have the same effect for me. Or, you can just try see how long you can go without playing. One of my friends lost a fwe hundred dollars when he re-formatted his computer and lost his steam account. He vowed not to play pc games and its been about 2 months so far.

Well, personally, I thought the new AvP was a huge dissapointment. I expected a better game but oh well. Best thing to do right now imo is to just give gaming a total break. Or just go beserk with a teamwork game at a lan centre like l4d2 or TF2.

Good luck finding your cure.

Just don't game for a while, eventually you'l hunger to play a little and then before you know it you'll be back in the saddle. When I get bored of gaming I do just that, I find playing games for the sake of it drives me futher away, so I leave well alone and then one day I wake up and its like "Hell yes I want to kill something" and bobs your uncle.
