All Final Fantasy games are like that but you don't know because of nostalgia.

WoW is so much better.

OT: Yeah, XII was pretty garbage to be fair, haven't got close to finishing it myself due to the mind numbing amounts of boredom.

XIII is quiet good but way too linear and the storyline is rather simple.

Oh and X is the best in the series in my opinion, it's an amazing game.

No worries, I haven't played any of the final fantasy games since they went 3D. I believe I tried 10 at one point when some one showed it to me. Out of the half hour that we decided to play games, I believe I interacted with the game twice. After that I decided Final Fantasy wasn't for me anymore.

I could be wrong on what game I played however. It was many moons ago. I'm sorry, but in my eyes, the 3d games just don't hold a candle to the eagle eye view 2d ones.

Wait! There is one game that still holds my interest that is.. Somewhat 3d... Final Fantasy Tactics I recently purchased for the PS3. I love me some strategy!
FFT doesn't provide a lot of strategy. It's one of the most hilariously breakable games in existence. By far the best storyline in FF though.
I tend to give myself drawbacks in games to give it more of a challenge, probably why I haven't broken the game yet. xD

If you hated it so much why did you play it for more than 60 hours?

FFXII is generally regarded as the worst FF game and they've always been hit and miss.

Meh, I might be one of the newbies who came in at FFX, but in my opinion the series peaked at FFVI. tThe final fantasy series hasn't been good since squaresoft became squarenix.

I quite liked VII, loved VIII IX and X.
Then XII came and I thought that while the game was ok, the plot and licence system and stuff was a bit rubbish.
Nothing prepared me for the unmitigated pile of effluent that is XIII however. Worst game I've ever played. If you thought the XII plot was bad, it looks like Shakespeare by comparison. Not to mention bad combat systems. XII didn't make me give up on Final Fantasy, XIII did
this is also pretty much true. If you thought XII was bad, don't even touch XIII. It's pretty sure, but the characters will make you want to claw your own eyes out.

You do realize that the target audience of those games was, and has always been, teenagers right?

You just grew up, you're not part of their target audience. They don't need deeply complex stories because the target audience doesn't demand them. My brother was satisfied with the plot for FF XIII, and that's really all they care about.
Generally speaking of course. FF XIII was an enormous flop in terms of well...everything. I hated it, still finished it though, bizarrely. I'm 15 and still couldn't make head-or-tail of who I was routing for due to the hilariously slow start to the story. That is of course, if you call it a story.

FF XII was a lot better that XIII in my opinion, but still pissed me off no end with its crappy bosses and non-existant story...

1. That they shoe-horned in at the ass-end of the game, gave no motivation as to why it rebelled, and had no backstory whatsoever. It's like Zemus from FFIV, but worse in that you can't chalk it up to limited cartridge memory and the infancy of the franchise. You would figure that after the extreme success of the PS1 generation, that Square would have realized that characters need motivations in order for an audience to be interested in them. FFXII did not have this.

2. Again, why? Just having them pursue a goal because they want to doesn't really seem that in-line with how Final Fantasy games tend to be.

3. There wasn't any plot. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door had a more engaging plot than FFXII and that certainly isn't a "mature" game with all of the trapping of "maturity" such as excessive gore and unrealistic looking female characters. FFXII has taken up the mantle that FFIII used to hold in that it was a piece of shit hiccup in the series. I'm disappointed in myself for selling my copy of IIIds back to Gamestop.

I liked XII, and I thought the plot was a refreshing change of pace from the typical fare. X had one of the best plots, but all of the 3D games have been moving away from core good gameplay. When I read in a review for Final Fantasy XIII that you should turn on auto-attack so you can sit back and enjoy the show, I knew that was it for me wit the franchise. Of course, I don't see why you wouldn't play X because XII was dissapointing to you.

I also did not care for FFXII, mostly because it's plot wasn't engaging and like 90% of it's characters were bland/unsympathetic (excluding Balthier and Doctor Cid). But after playing XIII I can appreciate XII a lot more; because while both games had barely any sympathetic characters, FFXII at least had semi-fun side-missions and interesting battle mechanics, as opposed to XIII which just had fancy wallpaper on its environments (aka: tunnels).

I disagree completely. The plot to both XII and XIII sucked purely because Hironobu Sakaguchi left. He wrote the stories to all the FF games until and including X and after he left, Square became an empty shell of a developer. I've never ever been so disappointed with a game as I was with XIII and it wasn't because I'm no longer a teenager. If that was the case then I wouldn't be currently enjoying Super Mario Galaxy 2 as much as I am. It's because the gameplay, story, characters, exploration, environments, it all sucked, was bland, dull and repetetive and a waste of 60 hours of my life. For that I blame myself for actually being so stubborn as to actually finish that shit excuse for a game

Because I have enough character to finish things I start.

Wrong.

That's a stock answer given by people who waste their time playing "games" that have no actual conclusion (ie: MMOs). FFIV... hell, even FF is still enjoyable because the ability to build your own party in combination with the simplicity of the game gave it replay value. Regardless of what "mature" and "hardcore" gamers might argue.

B..but.. THIS MAKES NO SENSE!

You're an adult now, that means that you're "mature"... you aren't allowed to like games like Super Mario Galaxy 2! Where is all the gore, swearing, and scantily clad women in that game? God, it's so "immature", I could never waste my time playing a game for "kids"

;)

I agree, the Occurians in general need more exposition. Presumably Matsuda intended to flesh things out more fully before Wada canned him in the middle of 12's creation.

2. Again, why? Just having them pursue a goal because they want to doesn't really seem that in-line with how Final Fantasy games tend to be.
"Because they want to" is the only reason any FF villains pursue their goals, save maybe for in Final Fantasy Tactics.
3. There wasn't any plot. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door had a more engaging plot than FFXII and that certainly isn't a "mature" game with all of the trapping of "maturity" such as excessive gore and unrealistic looking female characters. A: It's a political drama. That's a plot. Not a fantastic plot, but a plot.

B: implying 3 and 12 are worse than 8[/quote]

2. I think that Zemus and Sephiroth had a pretty clear motivation aside from "because we want to"... If my memory is correct, then Kuja and even Garland/Chaos had some semblance of motivation aside from "I just feel like doing this" in that they had a motive, however poorly written or implied it was.

3. Tactics was more of a political drama. Square should be ashamed that they sullied Ivalice with such a horrible title.

I never played 8, so I wouldn't know.

well its a shame to hear, Like all things in life its had its ups and downs. I came in at FF7 which was my first ps1 game, i loved it and when i heard about 8 i was happy. I loved 8 to pieces and still remember the day i got it! FF10 is one of my favourate games of all time. It had it all, and then 12 came out... ahhh 12. it felt like it was all the games being crammed into one. I did enjoy it but it felt like it was rushed/ not planned... not got 13 but will soon enough1!!!

HEY! Don't insult us!

OT: Final Fantasy has always been pretty bad ever since gaming technology got to the point we could make Action Battle Systems... and write properly.
Why does everybody think I'm insulting teenagers. Hell I am a teenager. Just because something is meant for teens or younger kids doesn't mean it's automatically bad; but it is likely to be simpler.

I liked XIII, my brother liked XIII and my mom was the first one to finish the main game for XIII (clocking in 70 hours) and is still playing to collect items and find rare monsters.

I took dislike to how the OP was talking about how the "goth teens" were replacing the "true fans". Just because you grew up with them doesn't mean you are their target audience.
