I finished FFXII last night, after waiting the better part of 4 years to give the game a shot.

Needless to say, I have never been more disappointed in a game in my entire life. This game is up there with Star OCean: Til the End of Time in terms of pure, unadulterated, soul-crushing failure. I'm sure some smart-ass is going to reply to this with "ALL FINEL FANTESY GAMES R LIKE THAT BUT U DONT KNOW CUZ OF NOSTALGEA, WoW IS SOOOO MUCH BETTAR!" but I've prepared myself for such a statement and have trained myself to ignore such idiocy.

My main gripe with the game? The plot (or lack of one). There was absolutely nothing engaging about the plot of this game whatsoever. No twists, no turns, nothing engaging. The main character was completely disposable and I never even used him once I got Balthier, Basch, and Fran together. The main villain looked like he belonged in a bad Cure tribute band, and who the hell was this Venat? Seriously, what purpose did this serve? What was any of the antagonists' motivations?

Final Fantasy is dead to me. I haven't played X, XI, or XIII, but I can safely say that I will never be purchasing another Final Fantasy title after suffering through 60+ hours of this god-awful piece of shit. I don't know when Square decided that the Final Fantasy series was a way to demonstrate the graphical capabilities of the platform it's released on, but they should know that they've just lost a longtime fan... not that it should matter, because the legion of retarded "goth" teenagers they pander to will pick up the slack left by the absence of original fans.
Seconded so hard.

But I will say I-X is good. I encourage you to borrow X because it is the swan song of the Final Fantasy series.

I guess I'm the only one who actually liked it then... Even though it did frustrate the hell out of me. I'm stubborn and have to finish a game.
Like someone else said, you probably just outgrew it. I doubt I'll like Final Fantasy XXIIVIIDXXXIXXIIIX or whatever when I'm past my teen years.

Well good for you, I guess. I've never really liked the series, or the genre, but if your looking for a new JRPG franchise that's similar, but not shit, my JRPG liking friends tell me "Shin Megami Tensei"(sp?) is quite good, though they are all on ps2.
Well... there is Devil Survivor on the DS. But saying that game is tricky is like saying Ikaruga has a few too many bullets. The game is insane later on.

OP: XII is probably the worst in the series, as many in this thread have pointed out. The overall tone of the games changes between each iteration, so you shouldn't let one crappy game put you off the series forever.

I've played FF6, FF4 and FFX (in that order) and I have to say that FF6 is my favourite overall. It's plot was fairly 'out there' at the time, the backstory of each character evolved gradually and believably and it still promotes discussion to this day (Just who was GoGo?)

But yeah, Don't give up just yet, wait for FFXV for that. :D

I have a lot of sympathy with the OP. I grew up with these games like he did. My favorite was 7... yeah I know so sue me. But unlike a lot of folks my second favorite was 8. I liked all of them up till 9. I didn't much care for 9 but it was really just personal taste. X was pretty good and then... nothing. Everything after X was dead to me. I have not enjoyed a final fantasy game since X. XI was a meaningless grind with pretty colors, X-2 was just pure crap, XII was the worst of the entire series, and XIII I won't even be trying. I would rather square just start over and remake the series. As far as I'm concerned Lost Odyssey is the unofficial Final Fantasy 12.

So, in other words, the OP has overcome his final fantasy about Final Fantasy.

FF13's general absymality can probably be overlooked somewhat on the grounds that it's not like there hasn't been duds of Final Fantasy games in the past. Remember FF8? Whether Square-Enix pulls another "lets back to our roots" FF9 move or stays the course into mediocrity is really yet to be determined.

Did I just hear the OP insult Final Fantasy Tactics, which is both the best Final Fantasy and the best Tactics game ever made?

If so, your opinion is officially invalid because you have no idea what is fun and what isn't. But I might have misheard, because the quote walls were confusing, especially when you quoted yourself.

But I do agree that FF12 sucks. The battle system is too slow, much of the game is solid grind sandwich and I hate most of the characters. FFTA is a "kiddy" Final Fantasy, and it's not BRILLIANT or anything, but it's fairly enjoyable to learn skills and build your team.

Oh, and Chrono Trigger > Chrono Cross, if only because the plot makes actual sense, the characters aren't stupid and they don't all have speech impediments. But I do like CC too.

You just grew up, you're not part of their target audience. They don't need deeply complex stories because the target audience doesn't demand them. My brother was satisfied with the plot for FF XIII, and that's really all they care about.
I hate how teenagers all get grouped together, were not all hoodies slouching around through the day and enjoy slitting the throats of the helpless while we bounce to rap music you know, Im 15, 16 next month, and i loved FF9, never played 10 cos i never bought a ps2, and i HATED final fantasy 13, i couldent get through the first 4 hours, i tryed, and tryed, but i hate it.

So in responce, no, not all teenagers love final fantasy..

I feel like I've been saying this a lot recently; but, all the talent from square left to form mistwalker, including the creator of the ff series. Lost Odyssey is superior to the last four or five final fantasy games in every way, be it characterization, combat, setting... whatever. Play Lost Odyssey.

I feel your pain! I myself used to be quite a Squaresoft/Squareenix fanboy but really, really disliked XII. Not because of the art style or the gameplay but because there is absolutely nothing happening for most of the game.

Try 'Lost Odyssey' for the Xbox 360. It's cheesy sometimes but I consider it as the Final Fantasy XII the real one will never be.

2. I think that Zemus and Sephiroth had a pretty clear motivation aside from "because we want to"... If my memory is correct, then Kuja and even Garland/Chaos had some semblance of motivation aside from "I just feel like doing this" in that they had a motive, however poorly written or implied it was.
After Garland tells Kuja that he has a limited lifespan, his motivation literally devolves to "I'm going to kill you all because if I'm going to die you should too. Also because I can.". Before that he was basically doing his flamboyant thing to have fun and resurrect the Terrans so he could be a God or something.

Zemus' motivation seemed to be "BECAUSE I'M EVIL" (or maybe "because I'm actual;y a vessel for the Avatar of Pure Hatred", but shh).

Garland/Chaos... Uhm, no clue. At all.

As for Vayne/Venat/Cid, some strange Godlike entities were apparently manipulating the course of history because they're dicks, and Venat was like "That's not right, you guys!" so he found Vayne, who is a backstabbing ruthless bastard who has an agenda (mainly "WORLD DOMINATION!) to which the destruction of the Sun Cryst and Nethecite in general would benefit him, which happens to coincide with Venat's getting rid of the Occurian's control of history (based around giving people superweapons). Yeeeeeaaah.

FF1 basically had no story, it was just fetchquest after fetchquest with some dialogue painted on. It had about 5 named characters. There were no events depicted whatsoever that weren't directly caused by the player. Good thing I love it anyways.

But I honestly think FF12 was interesting enough. Hardly great, but I felt the combat was enjoyable and that the side quests were interesting without detracting from the main storyline. Even the license system, which everyone hated made sense to me at the beginning, though towards the end of the game I felt it was pretty pointless. Least it wasn't that damn upgrade system that ten and thirteen share. The system did allow for a load of customization between characters. I felt the game's main flaws were that the storyline, while all it's elements worked together and there weren't really any glaring plot holes, never really felt as epic as it should have, and that there were too many characters for me to become greatly attached to without effort on my part, and many of them felt redundant, even with the incredible amount of customization. I guess gameplay is enough for me when it comes to games, even when the story isn't that great.

So you experienced one game and you didn't liked it. Therefore, you must hate the entire franchise?
... yeah, not to mention (from what I gathered anyway) the people who do like it?

If you were not enjoying the game why did you spend 60+ hours on it?

I think it may be a problem with your graphics card, not Final Fantasy, have you tried updating your drivers?

I agree with the post completely. Since Square merged with Enix, FF has fallen down the drain. Completely.

I'm a teenager, and I love VII-X and hate XI-XIII...
I 'demand' deeply complex stories. That's what they used to be. I LOVED the storylines for VII-X. They were the main reason I loved the games so much. But the newer ones just... fail.

I gave up as soon as I had a go on a friend's copy of X-2. Thank god I didn't buy it myself. I just wondered what the hell they were thinking when they made that game.

I dropped FF13 after about 4-6 hours and smacked one of my friends when he said you just have to play 20 hours through to start enjoying it. As far as I'm concerned the last FF game made was X.
