what do you expect from a section of the nation that are still obsessed with a war thats over a hundered years done? starting with the civil war era they havent shown a stunning grasp of reality and it hasent gotten better since that i can see.

i mean really, they try and split the nation, start a war over being able to OWN other people, lose the war soundly, and 100 years on we are still hearing about it? some retard in (pick a souther state) thinks its a good idea to fly the rebel flag on the state capitol building? i mean THIS is concidered a 'good' idea down there? the very symbol of slavery and yes epic stupidity is 'debated' by these people with their elected LEADERS thinking its a good idea?

it almost makes me wish we could change our minds and let em go. as far as i can see we didnt get much by keeping the south in the union besides 100 years of pissing and moaing about how they COULD have won the war if X had happened or Y hadent or a frog had farted in the morning of bull-run instead of the afternoon of the day before or what ever other nonsence they are still talking about down there.

talk about being stuck in stupid.

on the other hand im from New York (not the city) and we were ignorant enough to vote Hillary in as a senator so i guess the south doesnt have a lock on stupid. :)
Damn Yankees. Always puttin' a brother down.

In Florida (which has it's cosmopolitan areas like Pinellas County and it's DEEP Southern areas like anything outside the county line), I see a healthy balance between the two sides, or at least in the Bay Area. Most of the political signs I've seen have been in wealthy suburbs and waterfront properties, which if anything, tells me that only the upper class care about politics. Most of the people I talk to seem to be favoring McCain around Tampa, but again, most of the people I've discussed the election with are either wealthy professionals, small business owners/employees, or church-goers, so maybe my data doesn't exactly represent the whole cross-section.

On Southern culture in general, racism isn't that bad down here. Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics seem to get along just fine even in the swampy hamlets around Tampa. I can't speak for anything north of Florida, but Southern Pride down here seems to be maintained without the racism. It's more the fact that we didn't have to deal with you greasy carpet-baggers that instills such fond, Antebellum memories in us.:)

florida has allways been a little odd, hell half the population is snow birds or cubans. anyhow im not all that serious about my comments on the south. live and let live i say, it would be rather nice though if in a conversation sometime with someone from the south the civil war WASNT talked about like it was yesterday. if you ask me the first thing that should be tought in souther schools on day one of class is that no one outside of the south gives a shit anymore.

heh seriously its rather foolish dont you think? it just doesnt make alot of sence to me that the losing side in a war that they started over the right to OWN other people would still for ANY reason be proud of it.

ohh well i dont mean to 'put a brother down' with my comments on the south, i mean to put the idiots down that still think owning people 'wasnt that bad' and want to relive the 'glory days' that have been over for 100+ years and werent all that full of glory even at that time given desired outcome from the souths point of view

I find those people funny actually.

When my dad asked my friends brother who he would vote for if he could and he said "McCain". My dad asked why, he said "Because my dad's voting for him"

Well, my dad couldn't stand that. "That's bullshit!" my dad exclaimed, "Can't you think for yourself?"

My friend retorted, "well Obama also got a fake birth certificate from the Democrats. He was actually born in Kenya."

After that, it got to some little exchange of words, but it was halarious actually.

I also bet $1 that if McCain is voted in office, he will die in office. If Obama is voted president, I have $5 on the line that he will be assasinated succesful or not.

I don't-no-give-no-damn aboot-them-polotics. Either way we're screwed and I've got money on the line!

You've ranted about it more than anyone else in this thread. Maybe the Southerners you meet are only defending themselves from your tirade? And it might be easy for a Northerner to think it's inconsequential, but in the South we see it's effects every day. If you Yanks don't want resentment, maybe don't be so harsh next time.

Anyway, our attempt at independence and nationhood failed. Not an easy thing to cope with.

Obama is an African American Muslim Jew, and he did bad things.
Now that is just being racist. Besides Obama said on National Television that he was not a Muslim.

The Obama Muslim rumor was started in the army and spread from there. It could be a southern thing, because I heard it from my Sister who's stationed in Fort Hood, TX.

But I hate both candidates equally. So I'll probably throw my vote with Nader.

Oh, but if Obama was going to ban guns I would be his #1 fan.
I don't know, I'm more concerned with reducing violence than with reducing gun violence. Our constitution doesn't need any more holes ripped in it.

Ugh, I knew those comments I made on slavery in the Christianity thread would come back to haunt me.

Anyways, what's wrong with having nostalgia? It's not so much slavery as much as it is the fact that we governed how we wanted to and were culturally secure. The Antebellum South was pretty cool for whites. The romantic idea of the Southern Aristocracy has captivated good ol' boys and Yankees alike. Everyone loves "Gone With The Wind" and Southerners are especially fond of the concept of the honorable plantation owner; that Georgian Ubermensch, educated, chivalrous, charismatic (with that accent, how couldn't you be?), courteous, and witty. Sure maybe the slavery aspect of his life is downplayed, but hey, I'm sure there was at least one who wasn't a complete dick to his servants.

ok perhaps you can explane this for me. im not being sarcastic either, but just what 'effects' of the civil war do you see every day?

now i AM going to be a bit sarcastic when i say, the civil war wasnt some noble attempt at the poor down cast southern folk trying their hand at independence and nationhood, it was a war started by people who were pissed off that the rest of the universe around them wouldnt let them go on OWNING people.

what you see as a reason to be proud the rest of the world looks on with contempt and for good reason. the formation of the United States of America was noble, it was an attempt by people to throw off repression and establish independence and nationhood from an opresser, the civil war was started because the south wanted to continue owning people.

the whole thing from start to finish was nothing more than the slave owners saying 'im taking my ball and going home' because civilized people couldnt stomach slavery anymore.

anyhow way way off topic but i would be interested to hear how this still effects the south today on a daily basis.

I can see that I was right. It is you who cannot let it go. Your assessment is extremely biased.

Sure is nice and boring up here in Canada.

I know American politics will affect the world but, for now, can't we have threads on something new and fresh? It seems every aspect of the political campaign is being hammered into my mind grapes and I don't even live in the USA.

I would choose to ignore the threads but it seems like they're everywhere these days.

agree with you entirely, I'm a brit and all this is getting boring
Oh, how I envy you so. Sometimes, it seems like no matter who becomes President, the country is still going into the toilet. (If it isn't already there.)

And also, I'm pretty sure the Civil War was more about the North keeping the South and all of those farms and natural resources and such than the slavery issue. The whole "Emancipation Proclamation" thing was mostly so no one else would get involved.

EDIT: If you live in the South, you know we are the one demographic that can still be slandered, libeled, and insulted. That's what happens when you lose the war.
Amen! I get sick and tired of it, I'll tell you what.

EDIT: Still off topic, but...you can't understand the pain if you aren't Southern. It's doubly bad for Texans like myself, because we failed at independence from the United States not once, but TWICE. The Republic of Texas was a monumental failure, and we joined the Union because had we not we probably would have ended up as a third-world country racked with debt.

After reading the title I fully expected to see this end in Git-R-Done.....
But pointing out the ignorance of many Americans from the South is just as good. My personal favorite is the video Jon Stewart (might have been Colbert) showed of McCain wrestling the microphone from an old lady who was saying She was scared of Obama because he was 'an Arab'.

Uh...that would make sense if the rally was held in the South. I'm sorry to inform you, but Minnesota did not secede from the Union. You are just as well informed as the woman who cried "Arab!"

it isnt because you lost the war, hell Germany lost the biggest war in human history and we love them now. its because you fought a war over your 'right too OWN people and still to this very day think you 'should' have won, or that somehow life would be better in the south today if you could continue to OWN people.

my assesment isnt biased it simple reality.

The Germans owned slaves too. They killed them by the millions. I think we can agree that the Holocaust was far worse than American slavery. Slavery in the South at least helped build our nation economically and financially. The world's textile mills would've been hard pressed to function were it not for the massive amounts of material coming in from the South. Also, the Civil War was not fought solely over one cause, no war has ever been that simple. People liking the idea of an independent South aren't necessarily racist, they just would like for the region to be either culturally or politically independent.
