The great gatsby...I'm supposed to read that for English Lit. I take that it's good?
No. No, it's not. Pointy-headed intellectuals like to masturbate about it, but it's just not well edited.
...I see, so you wouldn't recommend it?

Not one person in this entire thread has mentioned Dune by Frank Herbert. This makes me sad. You people need to read more books! If you like the idea of historical fiction, the the Master and Commander series by Partick O'brian is an amazing read. You can also do Hornblower by C. S. Forester. Also on the fantasy side can't go wrong with some warhammer, and more specificly the Horus Heresy trilogy.

Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust. It's a fantasy series made of awesome and win, with great characters, an exiting story, and awesome narrative.

Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. It's the napoleonic wars with dragons. All you need to know. But also it's amazingly well written, with lots of historically accurate references and great characters. And dragons.

The book "Rule of the Bone" by Russell Banks is fun. It's about this kid who runs away from home and gets into all kinds of crazy adventures, totally reinventing himself in the process. It's good, descriptive writing, and lots of funny dialogue. It's told in a realistic way, but is still dramatic enough to hold your interest.

"Survivor" by Chuck Palahniuk is really interesting, too. Some people hate on his style, and I definitely understand why, but the narrative of this book in particular is incredibly different from anything else I've read. It would be worth a library rental at the very least.

The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins.
If you're going for that one, you should probably also read The Dawkins Delusion by Alistair McGrath, just to be a little balanced about things.
