I have Four Questions for you:

1. Do you like Vampires?

2. Do you like being scared?

3. Do you like gore and well-written descriptions of gore?

4. Do you thinking "Talking to Dead People" is a cool power?

Read The "Necroscope" Series by Brian Lumley and thank me later.

If you are just getting into reading and thinking to yourself "Oh dear, 300 pages?" I suggest you read the X-files novels, they are around 100 pages and an easy read, but by no means bad (unless you hate the genre).

"Looking for Alaska" by John Green. A great story about teenagers at a prep school that actually seem to act like teenagers.

i for one loved Catcher in the Rye, it was one of the few books that i had to read for high school english that i actually liked. I like Fantasy books, so i would suggest The Hobbit, I just started the wheel of time series, i loved the Chronicles of Narnia, and the Cirque du Freak books were an okay read.

Oh and "I am America and So Can You" is rly funny

1984-George Orwell
Cat's Cradle-Kurt Vonnegut
R.A. Salvatore's entire Legend of Drizzt.....or just the Dark Elf Trilogy.
Crime and Punishment-Fydor Dostoyevsky if you're feeling ambitious
Issac Asimov's Foundation books
Also George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, at least the first book, A Game of Thrones.

Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain
Anything in the Star Wars EU written by Timothy Zahn.
The Dresden Files books by John Butcher

And of course, Hitchhiker's Guide, this is the sci-fi nerd's bible of tropes. XD

Also if you want something philosophical:
Boethius and the Consolation of Philosophy
Machiavelli's The Prince
The Confessions of St. Augustine

I could go on all night.

My favorite books are books that make me think about myself and human nature in general, give me fantastical tales of adventure, allow me to wrestle with morally ambiguous situations, and/or are just plain awesome and entertaining.

As for how I read books, it depends on the genre. The books that I read solely for entertainment, I blaze through and read in chunks when I have the time.
For more meaningful books, like the classic books I mentioned, plus the works of Vonnegut and Asimov, I tend to read slowly and carefully, designating the amount of time I'm going to spend on the book. Usually I'll take these books a chapter or two at a time so that I can think about and process what I've read.

Anything "Joseph Campbell"
if you have a netflix account you can stream or order some of his visualized lectures, as a pre-intro to reading one of his books.

A Song of Ice and Fire (my favorite series of all time, althought I doubt it will get finished)

The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings and Leigh Eddings

One of my top three favorite all time fantasy books and it's a stand alone so no huge series to catch up.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

If you have not read this book FIX THAT.
