Try 'Fatherland' by Robert Harris. It's an alternative history thing where Germany won WW2, and a journalist slowly uncovers the horrors of the holocaust. If you want some good scifi read David Weber's books. Just about every single one I have read were worth reading.(the exceptions were still good reads just they were the next book in the series and were not the best book.) The First book I suggest is "On Basilisk Station"
Also one of the best book series I have ever read is called The Posleen War series by John Ringo. The First one here is "A Hymn Before Battle" I'm sitting here waiting for the next book and its not showing up fast enough!

If you like comics I recommend a graphic novel called DEMO. Its 12 stories about regular people getting superpowers and its not so much about fighting crime, but how these powers effect these peoples lives and how they cope. I really liked it personally.
