I'm writing a story, and I need an alias for my serial killer.

If it's one the police or media gave him, it'll be based off his "signature", the common element in all his killings. Even if his MO changes, the signature won't. At least, usually. Sometimes it does, which causes police to think their dealing with a copy cat when they aren't.

If he's dumping the bodies in random places but the police have figured out that it's a serial murderer, that means he's leaving behind a signature of some kind that links all the murders. Maybe you could name him after the weapon he uses? Or maybe he carves something into their bodies? Does his mutilation all follow a specific pattern? Maybe he cuts specific parts of the body.
If he is killing women in particular, then maybe a woman offended him when he was younger, or he had an overbearing mother. But then you said he just kills whoever's there. I haven't got any ideas for names in particular, but I'm just trying to pinpoint a distinguishing feature that you can use. I'd say it's probably his knife.

And I'm not criticising '4-skin' in particular, but would the media really name a serial killer that? It seems somewhat tasteless and insensitive to the family and friends of the victim. Just not very realistic.

The Red Smile. The Hack Comedian. Disarmament. The Lego Killer (disassembling and all that). The Serrated Edge. The Unarmed Killer.

Okay, this is going to devolve into limb jokes pretty soon, so I'm just going to leave it at The Handless Man and move on.

Mostly women, but there were a couple dudes. It was a woman who offended him, lol. I would say it's the method by which he cuts them up; it's the only thing truly the same about all the victims.

The Los Angeles Butcher? somthing like that or somthing with the same words in a different order (The Butcher of LA, for example) sounds like somthing the news would call him.

I'm thinking I like this one. I was originally gonna do "the LA Slasher", but then I googled it and found out it was a real guy.

Lol, I just don't want to go too much into detail and sound all into it, you know? Then everyone with look at me sideways and think I'm weird.

Also, it's not entirely random, like, oh, I saw you now you're dead, but the reasons aren't really relevant to the way he's killing.
Well its hard to give a special alias to a murderer that does stuff at random.

Huh.

If you don't mind the light reference to religion, you could go with something along the lines of The Angel's Sinner.
(Los Angeles=The Angels, Sinner= Creepy)

Are you writing this for school or something? Depending on your teacher, I can see trying to keep from seeming too into it. But, I do have to say, feeling all that stuff out can make the difference between an ok and an amazing story.
You don't have to say every detail about the crazy dude, but having an internal continuity for all his emotions and dysfunctions really adds an element of Holy-shit-this-is-freaking-terrifying.

Enigma. Seeing as how your guy seems to be pretty random, i think it fits. Also, enigma is a bad ass name for anything.

How about something like "Lone Wolf"? Certain species of animals, such as wolves, tend to bring down their prey by attacking the throat or similar vital organs. If the MO has a focus on slashing the throat first, such an alias would seem apropos.

The slapchopper.

OT: Maybe the Filleter (like the L.A. filleter (it even kinda rhymes, if you pronounce it fil-ley)).Like filleting a fish, he hacks them up but not super cleanly.

Or maybe if he has a weapon of choice like maybe the bowie knife of a hacksaw they could just call him Bowie, or The Hacksaw.

Or if when he slices their throats he lets them bleed to death before mulching their body, they could call him the Leech, or the [insert name of an animal that drinks blood here].

He is completely batshit, lives in L.A and basically mutilates just about anyone he can get his hands on. Any ideas?

EDIT: Like his serial killer name ie. Jack the Ripper, the Happy Face Killer, something that the news people call him.

EDIT EDIT: He's nuts, and he kills people because of it (yeah, I know most crazy people aren't actually violent). He only kills in LA, but he's not specific to one part of the city. There's really no link between his victims, but his MO is to cut their throats, then hack up the bodies. This is done really poorly, as he has no medical knowledge. He is pretty non-specific as to where he dumps the bodies.
Never mind the name, you need to flesh out the character a bit more. Everybody who kills does so for a reason, it's never as simple as "they are nuts". What sort of "nuts" is he, obviously he has a mental illness of some kind, what sort? Has he been diagnosed? Has he taken steps to control it? Is he on any medication, what effect does that have? If he is then it's obvious that his medication isn't working out that well for him - has he tried to change to other medication? Which type? What do the doctors say about his condition? They wouldn't know about the bodies but they'd know he's nuts, surely. And if he's not diagnosed, how can he be such a psycho yet hide his "batshit" condition from the general public? Obviously he doesn't kill literally everyone he can get his hands on or he wouldn't be able to even function in society (when buying food he'd kill someone before he reached the checkout, when leaving the house he'd kill the first person he'd see, couldn't possibly hold down a job and get income etc), so how does he select victims? How does he stop getting caught? Is he careful? If he's careful, then that suggests that his mental illness isn't omnipresent, because you have to think fairly clearly to cover your tracks. Why does he hack up the bodies, what purpose does that serve? What does he do with the bodies once he's hacked them up? How does he dispose of a hacked-up body - doesn't this make it more difficult in some ways (such as leaving a forensic trail)? How has he evaded capture? If his killing is truly random, surely then it would be confined to a specific area, because why travel all over a big city like L.A. when you're an impulse type of killer who kills "anyone he can get his hands on"? And if he is travelling all over the city that suggests that he's smarter than the average cat and maybe not so "nuts" after all... sounds like he has real motivations. Also how does he feel about killing after the event? Is he aware that his killing poses a potential problem for his lifestyle? Has he taken steps to control his urges, given that they stem from mental illness? If he revels in it, why? What's in it for him? Why go to all that effort? Why bother?

If you can answer all these questions then you're probably getting close to deciding on a name for this person.

This is very true. If you're writing a crime drama then exploring the motivations, method, and means of your killer become vastly important. If you know why he kills them the way he does, or what triggered him to start killing it adds depth, so thinking about them doesn't make you crazy.

And building on Uncreative's Angel theme, perhaps Angel's Wrath.
