In The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, why is your character being led to his execution?

OT: Pretended to be a jester and told a little Nord I was a messenger of death before killing her... Yeah, that stuff always catches up and bites you in the backside later... I really shouldn't have fled to Skyrim after the being accused of pushing a Bosmer fan of the Arena Champion from the top of Dive Rock; "but I swear, he jumped after I told him to get lost!"
