So...it was one of the last greats of its kind, just taking bits and pieces of a bunch of similar works to make their own...and this is somehow original?
Define original.

Was Shakespeare's Othello original? Romeo and Juliet?

What of Dante's Divine Comedy?

Or an even earlier piece or literature, The Odyssey? It could be arguable that even the Odyssey wasn't entirely original.

I think that for the last 100 years it has been impossible to write something that isn't at least in part copied from something else. But that doesn't mean you can't combine the elements in a new or innovative fashion.

But George Lucas didn't "combine [the] elements in a new and innovative fashion". You should check out the DVD "Indiana Jones: Making the Trilogy". On it, he says he was trying to make a modern version of the film serials of the 30's and 40's.

Crystal Skull was fine until Aliens, Indy is the Bible and black magic.
actually no Indy is a pulp adventure and aliens are very much a part of those things, so it's right up Indy's ally
Oh even that taken into account it still sounds like a weird jump to make, I've never known another film series or any other media to do aliens and magic (and then to do it well)
look up Doc Savage, Superman and various other ones :)

do you mean in the early 80s for the movies or the 20s - 50s when the orignal pulp novels came out?
The books, naturally. They are the original source for Indiana Jones. The films also, but mainly in terms of that day film-industry techniques and capability in special effects.

I feel that the latest Indy was partially ruined by the special effects. The story, the driving force behind Indiana Jones, was left to the backseat.
right and the variety of stunts in the first three were totally reasonable, like the inflatable boat falling from the plane

you have very flimsy arguments, like most of the Lucas "fans" out there. you should really watch all the movies back to back and watch them with a critical eye and not have any nostalgia and rose coloured glasses like you seem to have with the original three movies

you should really learn about Indiana Jones and the history of it before you try to claim to know anything cause it's rather obvious you have no clue
And perhaps you should reread what you've learned, because it's obvious you haven't dealt with the subject in quite a while.

But if this is going to turn into a 'Yes!' ' No!' 'I know better!' 'No I do!' competition, then I have better things to do. Say something of substance next time if you plan on continuing this discussion between us.
i have and i'm quite aware of them all, maybe you should really do it since i DO happen to know a bunch about the various aspects of pulp novels and such. you however don't really have that great of an idea as you keep thinking Indiana Jones was really original

I think I might be the only person on this entire planet that actually liked the fourth indiana movie.
No not at all. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I had watched the previous 3 a month before the 4th came out, just to get myself hyped and all that. And you know what? The flow, pacing, acting, etc.. it was all pretty much the same. There were incredibly ridiculous things going on in ALL of the movies. There were funny plot parts, cheesy parts, bad parts, generic parts and good parts in every movie of the series. The 4th is no different than any other Indy film except that Harrison Ford is much older. Of course you'll get idiots on this forum who'll attempt to pick it apart and analyze it and make a fuss over nothing (re: the aliens thing... just shut the fuck up already).

I think most people who enjoyed the film realize that THEY AREN'T CHILDREN ANYMORE. This whole "I want my childhood back" thing screams of much more deeply rooted psychological issues.
My thoughts exactly.

Okay, so here we have a guy that have been present when the lost ark where opened, have found the holy grail and witnessed the dark arts of hindu black magic.

BUT ALIENS!? HEAVEN FORBID!
THATS JUST TOO FAR FETCHED!

Well personally it annoys me when comics (x-men in particular) start adding aliens, and especially magic. Often comic books will put so quazi-science on things and magic has no such explanation. They just seem like two distinct things

Honestly, as long as it has the same crew as the first 4, then I'll be delighted. I just don't understand what people's problem is with Crystal Skull. Thankfully this thread has thrown up some common sense arguments.

Indiana Jones always was a throwback to the 30s-set adventures serials that Spielberg and Lucas watched as children, as well as various adventure stories, comics and such like. It makes sense that, when the franchise moves into the 50s, it takes with it the 50s sci-fi feel, so you see, aliens are a perfectly natural jump for the series to make. The plot was fine, and pretty much identical in structure to the other 3 films.

Much of the problem lies in peoples' cynicism, and the rose-tinted glasses which they view the original trilogy through. It means many criticisms of Crystal Skull just dont stand up. You didn't like the fridge scene? Fine, but that means you can't like the scene in Doom where they jump out of a plane and survive by using a dinghy as a soft landing. Didn't like the monkeys and gophers? Well, again, how can you like Doom for the elephant scenes? And don't even get me started on the light-sensitive spike trap in Raiders.

Fact is, Indiana Jones is a silly caper, it always has been, and Crystal Skull was no different. If you didn't like it, fine, but what brings my piss to a boil is when people criticise it for doing exactly the same things that the old films did in a more modern way.

That's called 'hypocrisy', people.

Unless this is going to be 90/120 minutes of the entire cast of the Crystal Skull Fuck apologising then I won't be happy.

seriously have you actually READ any comics? they've ALWAYS been about aliens and magic. that's seriously misinformed response because they've always been about those 2 things

I had to watch the fourth movie twice because my dad wanted to see it with me after I had seen it already.

God, it was so much worse in a second showing.

While I didn't hate the last movie, I thought the ending was atrocious. The rest of the movie was amazing, but that finale was so stupid that it brought the whole film down.
On a different note, I want to see Harrison Ford beat up more Nazis. Russians just aren't the same.

Wait how can they make a fifth if they didn't make a fourth, augh!!! Great I had spent so much time denying the fact that the fourth movie existed now I have to repress that one again and this new one.
Only if the fifth is any good. If not, It never was and never will be.
