I'm English and I hate the fact that a ridiculous amount of us seem to believe that we're still the leaders of a big fuck off Empire. What the fuck?? We're a small, pretty insignificant island! We have nowhere near that amount of power anymore and we need to come to terms with that fact, pronto. I'm sick of being America's lapdog and thinking we're cool because of it.

I hate that people think we're too good for the EU too. Like we wouldn't immediately go into collapse if we left it. Fucking morons.
We're hardly insignificant, we're in the G8 so we are still a major world power. Also don't criticise those who hate the EU when you clearly don't have any information about it. Most aren't opposed to the idea, what annoys people is that a bunch of foreigners are making laws that we cannot change, without them ever having been to Britain or knowing how these laws will affect the population. In no way would we collapse if we left the EU since our strongest ally is the US and not any European nation. No offence but if you don't know anything about politics, don't comment.

the sun hasn't set on the empire yet it's just gone behind a cloud or somthing ...
I am a patriotic 25% welsh, 74% English and 1% Russian...
Yay.
Also I went to a posh school (primary) so I guess I have a posh/Somerset acent.
(damn whenever I see the R word i must comment with: *imagine a thick Russian accent* "In Soviet Russia where there are polar bears and men who break you like apple upon leg")

OT: We still hold the record for the largest empire :p
Well depends on what you mean by largest empire as by contiguous (unbroken) area: Mongol Empire (ca 1300), 33.0 million sq. km, by % of world population: Persian Empire (ca. 480 BC), 44% and by % of world GDP: USA (1945) 33%.

However I know this isn't true, I actually see them as any other person, just with a different accent.
Thing is, you're probably thinking of the wrong accent.

I'm British. This is what we really look like:

Well, one of us anyway.
Well to be honest, not many people can tell all the small differences between accents. It may infuriate you, but all the accents in the U.K. sound very, very similar, to the point where anyone, not just Americans, can't tell the difference.

Not sure what my country at large (United States) thinks though.
If I had to guess what the country at large thinks it would be womanizing, tea-drinking, and flaunting their intelligence.
HOW DID YOU GET MY PICTURE! :p

Where does the womenizing part come from?
Mostly movies and TV shows. I don't let those define people from another country, but thats all a lot of people see of English people.

Plus there's James Bond. So yeah.
People must be able to tell a cockny accent from a very posh accent, it stands to reason. One is a murder of the british language and the other is a "we are better than you" feel to it.

Most of theones I've met are pretty alright, quite a few meet the "Arrogant twat" stereotype.

Their attitude towards the world cup always annoys me. "We're definately going to win it."

No...no you're not.

I suppose it's an outside point of view. It's like one of us saying all American accents sound the same or all French accents sound the same etc. Actually living in the country you notice a huge difference in accents between people from different regions. i.e in Britain, someone from... say... Manchester will sound a lot different than someone from London or the south east. Even an outsider can hear it.

That's pretty much what I think of when I think of England.
For a longer version of what I think of when I think of England, read any Adrian Mole book.

Well the Queen is the most powerful head of state in the world still, and she is Head of the Commonwealth and also is hugely respected by leaders the world over. We still kinda are leading an unofficial gang of countries ^_^

I'm English and love the English stereotype so I've made a habit of applying it whenever possible just for the sheer fun of it. I own a monocle, a morning jacket and two top hats. I'm also an atheist (although we're still mostly a Christian nation) and I'm trying to teach myself Latin.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, I look like this:

Yep, I know, awesome isn't it? Not pictured is the monocle because I only just managed to track one down in a back-alley antique shop in London (1945 solid brass, fantastic bargain at £30!). I'm a bit of a Steampunk fan, too, so you can't see my ray gun or kick-ass goggles there neither (I'm going to buy an HD camera soon and post up some "How To" videos on Youtube). It's not how I look all the time, only when I'm talking to people over Skype or Yahoo Messenger, mostly it's just for fun and to get people to laugh. I firmly believe that if you can't laugh at yourself then you have no right to laugh at others.

When I think of the English I think of this

also I love this quote:

Billy Fish: He wants to know if you are gods.
Peachy Carnehan: Not gods - Englishmen. The next best thing.

Why aren't the English like this anymore?

In my mind, all young English people are Harry Potter, all young men are Jason Statham, all middle aged men are Ricky Gervais, and all old men look like this. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/QuintessentialBritishGentleman]
I wish I was Jason Statham. Not too fond of the idea of being Ricky Gervais though.
