The monarch is just a figurehead with very little legal power. The Queen has the power to make very minor decisions, but she cannot affect parliament in anyway to my knowledge. She particularly has no power in Australia as we're completely legally independent.

The Governor General, as the Queen's Representative, therefore an extended arm of the Royalty, can exercise Reserve Powers to dismiss a sitting state, territory or federal government, amongst other things.

The Queen herself can use these same Reserve Powers when on Australian soil, and also is allowed to personally appoint a Governor General herself if she so desires. As Reserve powers, they can be executed without approval from any branch of government.

Not, of course, that you'd likely see her or the Governor General ever exercise these powers, but, they do still have them, hence the whole Whitlam Federal government in the '70s, Jack Lang, I believe, in NSW government in the '30s being dismissed. They were also almost used in the mess Joh Beljeke-Petersen turned Queensland into in the late '80s and another couple of occasions since Federation.

Our government are a bunch of fascists. I really fucking hate what's happening to the country. First, games getting banned/censored every 10 minutes, now our internet.

The "think of the children" logic just doesn't cut it any more. FUCK YOU KEVIN RUDD, FUCK YOU AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT!

"Negligible impact on speeds." So there is some impact obviously, and our internet is already bloody slow enough. It's not even because I want to go on any websites that may be censored, but purely out of principle.

So the poor internet we do have over here in Australia is gonna get censored? Thats shit, I thought they abandonned that plan after a team of hackers crashed the government site with information about it and pretty much said "Don't fuck with us the internet is fine as it is(hooray for lobbying).

Edit: Are any of you people posting on this giving shit to the Australian Government are Australian? If you aren't how come your countries governments can't/don't do this shit?

Also when I was one of these kids that the government is trying to protect NO ONE looked on the internet for bad shit. We just didn't care about porn and drugs n shit and the kids that are younger than me dont either. The children that are gonna be exposed to the bad stuff that the government wants to censor will come from their parents first.

I feel for the Aussies here. From what I can figure you basically have two options, since the tenets of democracy don't work in your country, see Michael Atkinson, you can either just let them censor your internet or you can get off your beaches/stop going to work/school/sitting around playing video games and protest your government. Get your asses up the capital building or whatever you have in Aussie-land and tell them you will not eat until they stop censoring your internet, give you a +18 rating and start treating you like adults. Fuck I know that doing nothing about anything is convenient but in the words of a great man "this shit will not stand". Seriously.

I have been thinking whether i want to be a parent one day, but first someone has to link me to a study saying that as soon as (my wife) has kids I won't suddenly become brain dead retarded and expect the government to make everything child friendly so I don't have to do any actual parenting.

Please can someone on this site who is a parent say they think anyone who believes that they shouldn't have to monitor their children and the government should just g-rate the world should donate their brain tissue to someone who still has brain cells?
