Is 7/10 a low score to give Killzone 2?

Edge needs to stop drinking so much beer. I mean: giving Killzone 2 a 7 but the new Tomb Raider a 8?1

I can't believe it when people ***** about good review scores.
"imagination... barely exists."
So its another generic fps. So does it deserve a 10/10? No.

Why the hell do people care about reviews? Play the demo, you enjoy it you buy it, you hate it you don't buy it. Simple has that, no need to give a crap about reviews.

On the subject: Nah, it's a decent note.

I tried the demo and was bored by it. It's just another generic shooter. Pretty, by any standards, but still just another shooter. Not so much a Halo killer as it is another Halo.
It plays nothing like Halo.

At all.

Ever.

Wat. It's a first person shooter and is therefore like Halo? I'm... confused.

I reckon the games industry as a whole would be better if people held all video games to such high standards as Edge do for most games (I say most as there are games where they get just as engulfed in the hype as anyone else.)

I've always respected the overall toughness of reviews from EDGE. Too many people can shout out "buy this game" and give it 5/5 or 10/10 but there has to be a point where the reader has to make the decision if they are going to follow the review to determine if they are going to purchase the game.
I'm a bit of an EDGE fanboy, guilty. I find it's reviews true to the quality of the games. 7/10 is a respectable score and it's assumed the article will also be read. Hopefully the 7/10 will promote the demo, the more people who play the demo the more people can decide whether they like it for themselves.

I've downloaded the demo, I heard good things from friends so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Current rating systems make a 7/10(or 3/5) a near failure.
Anything under 7/10(or 3/5) means "don't buy this game".
I'm not saying I agree but because you think this I can't say you're wrong. If this is popular opinion I think it's wrong that it's come to this and the review scores have been skewed.

Maybe EDGE's reviews are still on an appropriate scale (7 being pretty good) and it shouldn't be considered as 10=GOOD. Anything else BAD.

Rating systems by magazines are never a real rating. Whens that last time you saw them ran anything below a 5 in a magazine. They are chickens that are afraid of rating a game for what it deserves. That is why I find ZP, Jeremy Clarkson etc and a few others interesting because when they look at something they don't sit there and powder it up for you. They become brutally honest whether it is good or bad.
Edge frequently scores below 5 that's why this 7/10 should be taken as a good representation of the game.

It's Edge Magazine. The only people who write harsher reviews are Destructoid.
Do you respect their scores though?

I may check out Destructoid

You're once again confusing refined and generic. It has managed to polish all elements to the point where it is the pinnacle of its domain - hence, yes, it does deserve a 10/10
That's the kind of exclusive the PS3 needs so people finally respect it, rather than blowing it off, getting excited for the demo.

I found another link that may be of interest, to do with Edge's scoring system:

http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/xbox-360/news/does-a-perfect-score-mean-a-perfect-game/a-2007100919021828033/g-20060321132945404017/p-6

I have to say I stopped reading Edge when I got Broadband and I get most of my reviews from the relatively unbiased/uncorrupted:

http://www.teletext.co.uk/gamecentral/default.aspx

I had thought that Edge were getting ridiculously high-brow at that time (I don't know what it is like now), but I felt the KZ2 review was clear and pragmatic, making me feel that I might actually want to play the game - something that surprised me, as gameplay trailers had left me totally unawestruck. I think it may all be a case of the PS3 not having as many FPS games as the 360 and PC, so it is more of an event.

I'm not going to be losing sleep over this 7/10 score. I don't even own a PS3. The reason I started this thread was to explore people's views of review scores in general. Do you use them? Who do you trust? Who don't you trust? Should reviews have numerical scores? Is there a fairer way to measure quality than 1-10?

I watched the gametrailers review and it made me never want to play the game, and they gave it a 9.2. I am a ps3 owner, by the way. It's not that the review made the game sound buggy or screwed up, it's just that many of the gameplay elements they described did not appeal to me. For example, "slower pace" "you will die a lot." the best shooter (as far as amount of fun) I've played this year is actually Quantum of Solace. I liked the fast pace and the way the game made me feel all kinds of badass.
The point I was originally trying to make was don't go by the game's score. Listen to what the reviewers have to say in the article/video.
And no, 7/10 is not too low at all for a magazine that historically rates thing low.

Who cares what they think, if you like it then don't let it bother you.

I personally really enjoyed Mirrors Edge, in my book it would be a 9 but edge only gave it a 5. I personally don't really care what a bunch of otaku wannabes think about games that are actually good.

To quote Yahtzee.
"... Do you really need somebody in authority to give you a yea or nay before you buy anything. Why don't you roll over so they can stamp on the other side of your face."

And again.
"... Its worth remembering that all game reviews are subjective personal opinions, and if you personally enjoyed a game then you shouldn't let them get to you."

THAT is why I don't listen to, or read reviews.

(all quotes taken from the mailbag showdown ZP feature {but you already knew that})

We should have a star system like in film reviews.

It's a lot better than the 1-10 ratings we have now.

On who's scale is 7/10 "low"?
Good point. 7/10 shouldn't be regarded as comparatively "low'. Mathematically, the median point between 1 (lowest) & 10 (highest) = 5 not 7.

So, Edge are saying that Killzone 2 is well above average, even good.

Just not, very good, excellent, or revolutionary...

Yet, other magazines have gotten into the habit of skewing the scores upward, presumably to keep the publishers they liaise with happy. Either Edge are wrong, or there is something 'suspect' about the whole culture & independence of mainstream magazine reviews; which I think merits discussion.

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/killzone2

Currently, the metacritic score is 92/100 = 9.2/10

Killzone always looked pretty mediocre to me. Sure, the graphics are flooringly good, but it doesn't innovate much in terms of the gameplay.

Apparently, many agree. Looking over at the IGN review [http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=988773] the reviwer gave it 9.2, but the average player ranking with 1143 players responding was a was a 7.4.

Looks like Game Informer was actually right for once.

Judging by your rage first, think later approach to matters, I'm hardly surprised.

Halo - Generic shooter hailed as the second coming of Jesus in some circles.
Killzone 2 - Generic shooter hailed as the second coming of Jesus in some circles.
