Is anyone else starting to get annoyed by Square Enix?

Squeenix has proven to be a regular flop-machine; I think Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the first game they've even PUBLISHED that I liked a lot (it has its flaws, but for once, they're outweighed by its pros). And that's if I count their original works; the only other game that fits is FFT: War of the Lions, and that's a REMAKE.

Every single fucking game of theirs that I've played prior apart from that is mediocre at best, and downright insulting at worst.

On a tangential note: Their graphics department is very talented, but it's become the Lucasfilms of gaming: Shiny, but utterly lacking in substance. And that's the problem I have with everything they've released since FF10 (or FF10-2 if you must split hairs about the formation of Square-Enix).

And since FF13 got brought up: My friend brought his PS3 over and we played FF13.

Now that I've gotten my hands on a bit of it I can say that combat system is...meh.
It LOOKS active, but I literally feel as though I'm just directing a bunch of MMO-grind-bots. I know it's meant to be an improvement over FF12's Gambit system, but at least with FF12, the combat was pretty good because you felt as though you were doing something through your selected character, while moving through your environment (entering and leaving combat) was fairly seamless.

(And honestly, if the lead story-writer hadn't quit halfway through its long production, and they actually gave each character a unique role and skills rather than this stupid 'Tabula Rosa' shit they've been pushing since FF8, FF12 could have been one of the absolute best in the series. Instead, it falls flat because I don't feel motivated to keep playing its bland-as-sand story with its bland characters)

It's hard to get annoyed with a company that consistenly turns out turds, but doesn't take a dump on anything you actually care about.

They also publish some decent titles made by other companies, but they don't seem so bad a publisher.
Many weeaboos even like their crappy FF games, so everyone is happy.
What the hell people aren't alliwed to like FF games anymore? Just because. YOU don't like it doesn't mean others don't nor that they are weebos .

Umm, well, yes... It is... Because I've seen OP's posts before, and he uses American English, you know, the type that spells, "neighbor" and, "Aluminum" and, "Realize"? Maybe a bit presumptuous, but only Americans and people taught by Americans use that kind of spelling, so it's a presumption, but an educated presumption. Also, replace FFVII with FFIV, FFVIII, FFIX or whatever your favourite is that you're arguing for, it's all the same thing, FFVII was just used for arguments sake as they are the vocal majority.

I also remember one top critic giving Nier a 0 because he couldn't work out where to fish, "top critics" don't mean that much, man. Also, when did I ever say it was well received outside of Japan, my whole point was that it was well received in Japan...

Did you just make up those facts? "Final Fantasy XIII was the top seller for the company, with 5.55 million units, split 1.85 million for Japan, 1.79 million for North America, 1.77 million for Europe and 0.14 million for Asia/other."
(source: http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1090694p1.html)
"The RPG went on sale in Japan first just before Christmas last year, selling 1.85 million units. It later went on sale in early March of this year in the west, with the US outselling Europe by 1.79 million copies to the latter?s 1.77 million."
(source: http://www.vg247.com/2010/05/18/final-fantasy-xiii-sells-over-5-million-units-worldwide-in-fiscal-fy10/)
Last I checked, 1.85 is a bigger number than 1.79.

They're not about to collapse, they'll dissolve Taito and Eidos before they fall, not that it has any relevance to the argument.

No, there is no excuse, I never said there was, "FFXIV was ill received because it was riddled with bugs, not because it was a bad game, it was an unplayable game, they're fixing that for the upcoming PS3 version", there's my exact quote, the point of that section was that there was always a PS3 version planned, it wasn't just a recent spur of the moment thing like OP implied.

And it has nothing to do with Kingdom Hearts 3, when he announced Verses XIII it was just after Kingdom Hearts 2 when he thought he would have some spare time, after that Kingdom Hearts exploded and he moved in to capitalise on it creating Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts: Coded, now that Kingdom Hearts is dying down, he has moved back to his vanity project and is giving it full development. Yeah, it's Janky, I never said it wasn't.

To reiterate, you misinterpreted half of what I said, you got it wrong on the sales of FFXIII and provided no sources, stated the game was ill-recieved by critics outside Japan (another lie, check the end of the message for details) and somehow managed to interpret, "No, it's not, in Japan, FFXIII is literally the best game of all time in Japan. Source, Famitsu issue 1104 where fans voted Final Fantasy XIII as the best game of all time." as, "everywhere but America", and anyone who says it's "one magazine poll" doesn't understand what Famitsu is to Japanese gaming.

I'd just like to point out that linear=/=bad and boring, and I loved FFXIII and I'm excited for the sequel.

Anyways, no, I'm not annoyed with them. Why should I be? Verses XIII has been hinted to as a very huge game so it's no surprise it's taking so long. I'd imagine that they have a ton of on going projects and not enough people to work on them, so really their major problem is having a ton games in development, announcing them, and we never see or hear from them again until years later.

I like SE, they brought me Deus Ex: HR, and that game makes me happy.

Square who?

sarcasm aside, I find it difficult to be frustrated with a developer I don't buy many games from. The last (and only) SE game I bought was Kingdom hearts 358/2 days (and technically the FF1 & 2 thing for GBA), which was my first Kingdom hearts game, and I thought it was fun. The only FF games I bought were 5,7 and 8 (all of which were just square), which I liked. At 9, I just lost interest and couldn't enjoy final fantasy if I forced myself to try.

If you don't like them, don't talk about them. They thrive on all the attention we give them good or bad. Just ignore them and eventually people will come around and stop buying into it.

This has been annoying me for some time now too. My theory is that after Hironobu Sakaguchi left the company it started to go downhill. He and his team were the main creative and driving forces behind all of the previous Final Fantasy games before XII I think, and when he and Uematsu and those other early Final Fantasy developers left, the main creative spark behind Final Fantasy and Squeenix went with them.

Meh, I didn't particularly like FFXIII, but they've still made good, non-Final Fantasy games recently. Besides, they published Deus Ex: Human Revolution, that has to be worth something.

Umm...you are really using outdated info. Final Fantasy XIII sold 6.5 million copies worldwide (4.72 on the PS3 and 1.83 on the XBOX 360) and has a metacritic score of 83% (which is the average score after everything is said and done).

Source:

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/browse.php?name=Final+Fantasy+XIII (if you look at the charts on both systems, Japan only made up around 31% of sales)

http://release.square-enix.com/na/2011/09/20_01.html (its says 6.2 million, but this was released almost ten months ago)

http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/final-fantasy-xiii (User Score: 110 positive, 32 mixed, and 60 negative. I really don't care about the "gaming journalists" scores since they are inconsitant at best).

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/user-reviews/7727/final-fantasy-xiii/ (User Score: 8.1)

This game was far from universally praised among gamers. Is it better than a lot of games? Yes. But saying that one poll shows that the game is loved by all is misguided at best.

Once again, I'm not saying it is a bad game...it's not. Like I said, Lightning became tied with my favorite character of all time (Dante of Devil May Cry) and I really liked the gameplay (spent another 30 hours maxing everything out after the end of the game). However, if you look at the sales for the Playstation (the home console for the past 16 years)...

Final Fantasy VII: 9.72 million copies
Final Fantasy VIII: 7.86 million copies
Final Fantasy IX: 5.30 million copies
Final Fantasy X: 7.95 million copies
Final Fantasy X-2: 5.21 million copies
Final Fantasy XII: 5.75 million copies
Final Fantasy XIII: 4.72 million copies

The sales aren't so good in comparison (they only become good after adding the 360 sales).

I'll admit that it was hyperbole by saying that Square is on the verge of collapse, but losing almost $200,000,000 in net profits and losing $1,628,523,000 in overall revenue is quite drastic. This shows that they are quite obviously doing SOMETHING wrong.

Sorry about misinterpreting some of your comments, but after the recent barrage of "I Wantz teh FInul Fatazy VII Remaxes!", "Square can do no wrong! (people say this after having previously complained about Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIV, Dissidia Final Fantasy, Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy, etc...so much for consistancy, huh?), and the ever present "Finul Fantazy VII iz teh bezt gamez Evar...this crap suxks!"...I've been a little irratable (especially since my friend is one of these doofuses). No excuse...so once again, sorry.

Square Annoyned me when they made some of the worst FF games ever made that being 4,6,9. Those games they didnt give a shit about gameplay at all or anything and made boring ass stories.

XIII was great so was XII. ff fans are just idiots.

Honestly I'm just annoyed that we never get straight answers from them. I don't mind if a game EVENTUALLY in a 5 year period but I want to know that at least.

ARE you working on TWEWY 2?
WILL there be a Kingdom Hearts 3 (no not the 3d handheld thing coming out, an ACTUAL 3)
HOW much longer before the next big FF game?

These are the type of questions I want answered with a definitive and not just some kind of bad teaser like 'We're THINKING about it' or 'We WANT to do a follow up on that one' etc. etc.

Otherwise I love these guys. They string you along like a bad girlfriend but otherwise they usually live up to their past work, at least to me anyways.

Apparently, it's a trend amongst even square enix fans to hate on FFXIII while for me it's one of the bests with actually VII being in my worst games ever list.

It's the same reason Activision continue to churn out COD after COD, year after year. Because it makes them money. I have to say though XIII definitely isn't the worst in the FF series, nowhere near the best, but compared to X-2? It's a fucking masterpiece.

I like them for publishing Deus Ex: Human Revolution. And I'm interested in the Lara Croft re-boot that they are publishing...

But other then that, I don't care. I tried the most recent FF game and wasn't to impressed by it. They do, however, seem to make big advances in game engines. Check out this article from Gameinformer. Was really impressed.

For me, Square Enix can make as many crappy Final Fantasy games they want. It seems like they're only able to fund those games because they release awesome games like Just Cause 2 and, Deus Ex Human Revolution. Square Enix is very hit-or-miss for me. Haven't they also released some awesome FF remakes on portable consoles too? If anything I'm more annoyed at them for not giving us a third Kingdom Hearts yet.
