Squeenix has proven to be a regular flop-machine; I think Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the first game they've even PUBLISHED that I liked a lot (it has its flaws, but for once, they're outweighed by its pros). And that's if I count their original works; the only other game that fits is FFT: War of the Lions, and that's a REMAKE.
Every single fucking game of theirs that I've played prior apart from that is mediocre at best, and downright insulting at worst.
On a tangential note: Their graphics department is very talented, but it's become the Lucasfilms of gaming: Shiny, but utterly lacking in substance. And that's the problem I have with everything they've released since FF10 (or FF10-2 if you must split hairs about the formation of Square-Enix).
And since FF13 got brought up: My friend brought his PS3 over and we played FF13.
Now that I've gotten my hands on a bit of it I can say that combat system is...meh.
It LOOKS active, but I literally feel as though I'm just directing a bunch of MMO-grind-bots. I know it's meant to be an improvement over FF12's Gambit system, but at least with FF12, the combat was pretty good because you felt as though you were doing something through your selected character, while moving through your environment (entering and leaving combat) was fairly seamless.
(And honestly, if the lead story-writer hadn't quit halfway through its long production, and they actually gave each character a unique role and skills rather than this stupid 'Tabula Rosa' shit they've been pushing since FF8, FF12 could have been one of the absolute best in the series. Instead, it falls flat because I don't feel motivated to keep playing its bland-as-sand story with its bland characters)
