Like all of you, I try to preach about how games are an art as much as I can and am willing to debate it with the naysayers. But I always get a frequently asked question: what about all of duty or other first person shooters? people understand other games like RPG's because of the story or the innovation but what about FPS's? yes some games are mindless shooting but... those are still fun, and I will defend them. but how can I explain that first person shooter's are an art as well?
all video games are an art form, it a way of expression that takes the skills of writers, artist, designers, ect. Much like film makers.

even though id hate to say it, even COD is *hack cough* art! *cough gag*

Just because something is bad art doesn't mean its not art. I could draw stick figures and say hey ya know what this is art while someone says yes but it looks terrible. Art is objective, that's what makes it art.

Yes. To say that call of duty isn't a work of art is like saying that "Saving Private Ryan" isn't. Yes, I do understand that a lot more thought was put into SPR.

Simply, no.
You're coming at it from the wrong angle, I would not argue, for example, that all films are art. Some are just there for entertainment. There's no way all books are art, or all TV shows come even close (indeed TV is notoriously lacking in thought provoking stuff...)
SOME films are art, SOME books are art.
Some games are art too. There's no denying the roots of gaming which are ultimately to have fun but some designers go beyond that and provide a true interactive experience which is nothing short of art.

For me personally, Bioshock was and is, art. It's also a First Person Shooter so it's a good example to use. Games like Call of Duty and it's ilk are there for fun, they have the opportunity to provide art but mostly it's just for laughs.

That said, CoD4's story mode. Notably the nuclear scene and the walk through Pripyat, both those moments are pure gold and definitely touch on art. The game as a whole is fantastic fun but those moments are actual instances of art within the game, beautifully done.

Just because some games can be considered art doesn't mean all games have to be art, just like movies, books, and music.

I find it interesting reading this thread to see a large disparity between those who say yes, because video games are art and so COD must be since it's a video game, those who say no outright, and those who say no despite the fact that video games are art and COD is a video game.

I'm not saying one way or the other as to COD or FPSs as a whole, but I would like to point out that FPSs have provided some of the most dramatic and emotionally impacting set pieces in recent memory. Just remember walking through the airport terminal with the rest of the Russian terrorists. The rest of the game may or may not have been art, but that one section took artful work to compose.

If you want an arty first person shooter, there's Half-Life 2, Metro 2033(Moreso in it's original state, before corporate meddling), and of course Team Fortress 2. Call of Duty is art I guess, like all games are art. It's just bad art. It's not even a very good game.

to say "call of duty is art" is too say "constant gunfire and explosions is music".

NO IT IS NOT ART!

Passage is art, FPS's are not. Not even the really smart ones like Half Life 2.

I would not call Call of Duty a piece of art but there are other FPS that I would consider art, the obvious example being Bioshock.

Competitive multiplayer games as a whole aren't really art to me, if I was to compare them to anything they would be more like sports, though they aren't quite that either. But really, it's all pretty much subjective when it comes to art.

I would like to ask all of you to think for a moment. Think really hard. Come up with a one paragraph reason why.

Why does it matter if it's art or not? If you're asking if it should be protected under the first amendment, then yes it should, but otherwise whether it's art or not simply does not matter.

The Original Call of Duty games were depictions of battles from World War 2. These allowed people to understand what the "Greatest Generation" went through on the horrific battlefields. I truly enjoyed those and found playing through the various games and campaigns to actually learn a thing or two about History. NOW these current Modern Warfare and Black Ops versions are nothing but action flicks made into games. These in my opinion are not Art. The Original World War 2 versions are due to some historical accuracy, famous quotes during load screens, and actual real battle footage that took place. These are Art the current Call of Duty's are a disgrace to the game as Art argument.

It is is ARTificial, is it not?

Let me answer yourquestion more throughly with another question...

Movies are art. There exists a Transformers movie. Is the Transformers movie art?

Novels are art, right? Twilight carries on a shallow and pitiful existence too right? Is it art?

Anything can be said to be art, such as games in general. I think the real question should be: Does Call of Duty have meritorious artistic value? As a player who once denounced the FPS genre fervently but now plays them occasionally...I think that Call of Duty is fun, but that it has little, if any meritorious artistic value. So I would not cite it as art when attempting to make the point that games are art.

Most recent Call of duty games to be compared to art are like bad copies of a more famous painting. There is a lot to reminisce about the original, but it is just not as good.

The shooter Genre has hit it's stride, yet it no longer brings anything new. It's like the madden series. When you bring something new to the table, then your doing work. Anything else is just a copy.

Is Rambo/Terminator/2012/Transformers/your (least) favourite dumb blockbuster art?

Whatever you answer here, there's your answer.

CoD doesn't really try to be visually amazing or have a deep storyline.
Yes, they try to have "the latest and greatest graphics", but they focus on making things look cool, not good.

Compare CoD to Kirby's Epic Yarn.
CoD has gritty graphics, realistic everything, and the storyline in Black Ops may be "what the fuck is going on?" and interesting, its not really deep or moving.
Kirby has string and cloth as the animation, is really 'kiddy' and 'childish', and the storyline is literally a children's storybook. But few kids would understand how new and interesting Epic Yarn really is. Hardly any games take the approach that Epic Yarn did.

I think a game can only be considered a good work of art if it focuses on being a good game, more than selling copies. And CoD definitely does the latter.
