I played through as a thief my first time around, who starts with full black leather armour I think. All other armour couldn't compare to its weight and stealth. It fitted my play style perfectly. The amount of bosses that I ninja-ed, it felt like cheating.

Can't wait for Dark Souls.

Do you enjoy killing giant monsters, slaying demons and saving damsels in distress?
Do you enjoy having your ass handed to you on a silver platter?
Are you Masochistic?
Then this is the game for you!

It's very fun, but also hard. It has a one of a kind atmosphere you wont find in any other game.

@OP

What is it that you love about rpgs? If you love a good Bioware conversation or a Bethesda sandbox or having to cook your own food in Gothic, you won't necessarily like Demon's Souls because the game includes none of those features. It's all about combat and stats, but the setting is beautiful and the narrative is strong but lean. Give it a shot if you have a capacity for patience and are willing to really think your way through the game.

The wiki is very good if you like using guides, but you don't have to, obviously. If you plan to play online, be advised that Atlus's North American servers (if that affects you) are scheduled for shutdown in October unless they change their minds again. The game is still playable and fun, but a few very cool features get lost when that happens.

Dark Souls is coming out the same month, however. ;)

It's very fun, but also very hard and scary the first time through. Basically, the game is punishing. You get overconfident, mash attack, rush in, don't block or do other foolish things you will die and have to redo the entire stage all over again.

That being said, the gameplay is amazing. The aformentioned punishing mechanic forces you to play very solid and carefully like a real soldier up against overwhelming odds. It forces you to think before you strike, calculating every blow. The combat is perfect, offering a real medival way of fighting.
Admosphere is genius, as is the art design.

So yeah, you'll enjoy it. But only if you have the patience. You will die, and will probably die alot. Learn from your mistakes instead of trying the same thing again and again untill it works, because that doesn't work here.

Also. DONT USE A GUIDE. It's the easy way out and ruins the game. Knowledge is power here, so if you already know everything, the admosphere is gone and every enemy becomes a pushover.

No you won't have fun, you'll cry and tremble with hatred, break your controller and lie restless in bed infuriated with your own incompetence.

Prove me wrong...

I find it fun but I like games that challenge me to do better. And being that it is an RPG and I have to play it on console, yes that is a challenge for me.

It depends on what you want. I thought it was pretty good. It was challenging, for sure. But don't expect a strong narrative or characters like other RPGs. And I wasn't too crazy about the visuals in the game, but that's due to more preference. It's a very dreary looking game. The gameplay is great, and there is minimal hand-holding. Both your technique and the strength of your character are equally important to your success. You can be far into the game with great health, stamina, and equipment, but can easily lose a battle if you're sloppy. Likewise, there are some fights you just won't win with a weak character even if your technique is pristine.

Far from it. Its pretty darn easy compared to other games. Its not a hard game, its very easy.
No, no it isn't. I'm not saying it's the hardest game ever, but it's certainly not f*cking easy.

Big tip!

Armour slows you down and makes it damn near impossible to dodge roll out of the way. Dodge rolling is a must against a lot of the enemies in the game because a lot of the time the best way to take them down is to get behind them, especially when it comes to the later bosses.

Sometimes less if more in Demon's Souls, so I'd suggest "testing" everything and try to figure out the better armour combinations for a fast dodge roll, you'll know the difference because the heavier armour's dodge roll is pretty damn useless.

Also, I suggest the priest for the first try as his healing magic really helps in tight situations.

However the game is an RPG so you don't have to agree with me, this just happened to work for me, but experimentation is the key to this game if you want to find out what you're best at and what your play style will mostly center around. So go with what's comfortable. This is just basic advice, really, but it does work once you get the hang of it.

2) Make sure to learn to dodge. Dodging is your primary defense in DS. It's not like a traditional RPG where you rely more on soaking up damage: think of it more as DMC or something where you DON'T want to get hit.
2a) On that note: make sure your equip burden is no more than half its total, as once it is more than half, you will not be able to roll or dodge properly. Yes, that will mean having to run around with very light armor, or perhaps even naked at the beginning of the game, but being able to dodge is far better. Trust me on this one.
Oh, okay, never mind, someone else beat me to it. BUT DODGING IS IMPORTANT, DAMNIT!

Demon's Souls is not much of an RPG, if that's what you're after you might be disappointed. DS is all about combat, level/monster design and atmosphere. Indeed, it is hard to enjoy it at first. Initially you will most certainly have a violent clash between how you usually play action/rpg's and how DS demands to be played. You cannot win this fight. The faster you adapt to its pace and mechanics, the sooner it's gonna start making sense. Move carefully, always have your shield drawn and don't try to be a hero.

That aside, it's definitely fun, but not in the Mario Kart sense of the word. Its worlds are dark, rotten and deadly. By the time you have dragged yourself victoriously through Latria or the swamps, you will most likely need to step outside for a moment for some fresh air.

Also, I don't know how active the online community is right now. If you find it hard to invite people to your game however, don't worry. It can be played just as well completely solo, and that even benefits its atmosphere in my opinion.

Also, as a general rule, if you happen to find the game way too difficult, try starting with Royalty as your class. You have a wand and an awesome spell from the beginning and it makes the game much easier.

I died more often falling off fucking cliffs than actually being skewered by enemies, so I'm a tad bitter towards the game.

If you don't go guns blazing (like I did), or have an important NPC glitch out on you (which happened to me), know generally what to expect to come fighting at you (which I didn't), and generally watch where the hell you're stepping (which I didn't fucking do), you'll have a fun experience. Hooray. (Gameplay is a riot though, I won't lie)

Yes, it's a lot of fun. The combat is easily the best I've ever played in an action-RPG. Don't believe all the press about the game being insanely hard. It's tougher than other entries in the genre, but it's never unfair or cheap. Also, despite what people have said about guides I would recommend using the wiki. Not for boss fights and area layouts, but for item crafting. That stuff is never properly explained in the game for some reason.

Mind you, there isn't much plot or dialogue. If you're looking for a BioWare-style RPG, this isn't it.

[sub]And no, there's no problem with OHKOs before NG+ unless you completely neglect to upgrade your stats. Where are you people getting your information?[/sub]

Demon's Souls isn't easy, but it's a fair challenge. I died alot in the beginning,(1-2 and 2-1) but that was because I had the wrong approach on combat and was too careless. Once you get the hang of it, it works great. Bought it about a week ago and I'm loving it so far.

Also get it as long as the MP is live, the game said it can be shut down after july 2011, which we already passed.

I didn't think so. I think a lot of people like it because it makes them think they are hardcore or something when they play it because it's a difficult game and by difficult I mean it throws 1 hit kills at you which you dodge next time but none the less causes quite a lot of death..

I thought it was boring and it had next to no plot.
I'd just like to let you know that you have no idea what you are talking about. First things first, no one thinks they're "HARDCORE MAN" for beating Demons Souls. That's moronic. Most DS players agree that the difficulty is overblown. How is that even a critique on the game or why the OP shouldn't play it? What? Am I allowed to say that every Bioware game is shit because of the cesspool that is their community forums? Should I not play the Fallout games because the Fallout community is infamously whiny and horrible? Boy howdy, that makes a lot of sense...

Further, did you play the same game as me? There are very, VERY few one hit kills in Demons Souls. The only one hit kills in the game is the Dragon God and MAYBE the purple shadowlurkers in 4-2 if you have crap magic resistance. None of the traps will one-shot you, and most of the surprise ambushes will never one-shot you. Those are the ONLY one-hit kills in the game. If you were frequently getting one-shot in DS, you were doing something very, very wrong. You shouldn't fault a game when you don't know how to play it. PROTIP: You should make sure your first 50 or so SLs are nothing but vitality and endurance. If you do that, you'll never get one-shot.

Even further, did you EVEN PLAY Demons Souls beyond 1-1? The narrative in the game is great. It doesn't pound you over the head with its narrative, but it forces you to look and find the narrative. The world has very deep and interesting lore, but the game doesn't force you to find it. If you read flavor text, talk to NPCs, find items, and observe the environment, you'll find tons of great story in the game. What? Are games not allowed to have non-conventional narratives? Does every game have to tell its story the exact same way to be good? That's pretty offensive man. You shouldn't say the game has no story when it chooses to tell its story in a very different way.

I get the creeping suspension that you are of the "I never played this game or only played it for an hour but will still talk about about it on the internet" school of gaming. I hate it when people tell others not to play a great, fun, innovative, and unique game for some asinine reason like you did. Shame on you... shame on you.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those that made it out of 1-1, and those that did not.

Oh, and those that simply want to troll the game without playing simply because it threatens their whiny notions of what an RPG is, or because it was a PS3 exclusive. Good old Internet.

No. Daemon souls isn't fun. Some people perceive clumsy and unresponsive controls with the addition of linearity and scripted events (most times this includes an enemy pointing a flaming arrow at your head) as being fun. If this sounds fun to you then you'll definitely enjoy this game. Otherwise don't waste your time finding out for yourself.
