Is enjoying 'Metroid: Other M' wrong?

I recently rented Metroid: Other M. A huge Nintendo fan friend told me a few weeks ago that Metroid: Other M wasn't the best Metroid, but that I should at least play it once before making any judgments.

I'm in the ice area, and so far I'm enjoying it.

In the beginning I found Samus's voice to be extremely hard to like (had the same prob with Arc Rise Fantasia, and I ended up falling in love with that game). Yet after playing it a while I learned to basically take a snack break during the cut-scenes. Sure the game would be better if I could remove the voices, or skip the cutscenes*, but cutscenes aren't what a game is about. Game play is.

I loved the game play. Even if it took me a short bit to get use to using a Wii remote sideways (which is somehow foreign to me after playing the Metroid Prime series), they made it fun and exciting. The game is played in many different perspectives, the standard side-scroll one being my favorite of the bunch. They give many different challenges, the worst being the pixel-finding games, the best being that one bit with the lava. It has a varied difficulty level - have to admit that fighting the one hermit crab boss with one health bar was infuriating.

Then when I go to talk about it, people act like it's the worst game in creation - most of whom haven't played it and only read reviews. Those that have bitched about the plot and what they did to Samus. This is okay, they can be angry about that. She should be an uber fighting badass and not a daddy's girl. The lovely plot, long unnecessary cut scenes, and droning dialogue are things that make the game imperfect. When I get to talking about game play, their biggest complaint is - once again - Samus's plot restraints. They specifically whined about the one scene in the hot area.

... For some reason, instead of getting extremely pissed at the scene, I found it hilarious. I was laughing for Hours. Lava! Runrunrun, jump, burn, get nailed by fire bug, runrun, dodge, pant, slowly lose health, swear, get to the top, huge boss. Oh, Come On! Ring ring.... "Btw, Samus. You can use your lava suit now." That's comedy in action! I wish more games had a sense of humor like that.

Then the complaints stop, no one can ***** about the game play besides that.

And I'm still enjoying the game. Somehow this is mortifying.

So am I just not getting something? Is there more that I should be angry about? Will it somehow break the game later on? Or is there some other reason I shouldn't be enjoying this?

*Has Unskippable done a video of this game yet? If they could make one of those cut scenes hilarious, I'd love to see it. =D

No, from what I've seen of it first-hand there's nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

In before someone quotes Yahtzee-the-fucking-retard on this.

Not really.

It's wrong for anyone to be mad at the story, though. What the hell did you expect from TEAM NINJA?

A tale of empowerment? These guys make Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden.

The combat is functional, if not polished to the usual TN standards.

Other M is a fine game. The only problem with it is the storyline. If you enjoy it, then enjoy it.

If you like it, you like it. There's nothing wrong with liking a game everybody else doesn't.

I have not played Other M, and probably never will because I don't have the money and there are other games ahead of it on my list.

No. People's experiences with games are totally subjective. You had a good experience with this game which meant you got enjoyment out of it, so you're not wrong at all to say you liked it; you'd be lying if you didn't. So, no, having an opinion like this is never "wrong" even if others may disagree with you about what worked and didn't work, or what was good about the game and what wasn't.

A lot of people will probably be willing to explain exactly why they personally didn't like Other M, though. ;)

I found the game at my local library, believe it or not. Turns out that there are more than books there. Though you are right about the 'other games' thing. A shit-ton of games came out this year. I'm knee deep in them.

I wouldn't say it's wrong, but I'd say it could be flawed.

I demoed another friend's Other M and played it for one or two hours, and I'd say that basically it has the nail in the right place for everything that could improve Metroid, but just misses with the hammer. Integrating the 3rd person gameplay of old with newer Metroid Prime 1st person was a good idea, but it was just done in a messy and unpolished way. Integrating more story elements was a good idea, but they heaped on way too much than what the series really needed, in a poor, shoehorned way.

So not bad to like it, but bad to defend it's quality, I'd say. I've expressed before that I'd love it if a new team (or Retro) carried on with the path that Other M set in terms of gameplay. I might well buy a more refined version of the concept (extra points if it didn't use the wiimote.)

I had mixed feelings on the game.

Gameplay: It was well done and easy to control, most of the time. While simplified from other excursions, I can't bring myself to shoot down something so experimental that was pulled off well.

Story: Here you will find most of the resistance. Most people had a vision of who Samus was in their minds. Most felt she was a strong, capable, independant women who didn't rely on anyone else for anything, ever. I hated the voice actress they choice, but I do admire them for taking a chance and giving Samus a full-fledged backstory. A real person with real issues and real weaknesses.

As for following the commands of Adam, This is what it is like in the real military. You have to you the weapons and amount of force allowed by your superiors. It sucks, but that's life in the military. I disagree on the timing of the Varia suit allowance, but that is a minor quibble.

Graphics: Shit-hot for the Wii. Nuff said.

Ultimately, if people hate you for liking this game, it's their problem, not yours. I personally enjoyed my playthrough but won't be playing it again, since I enjoyed Retro Studios take on gameplay much more than Team Ninja's.

So, if you enjoyed it, good for you. Glad you played a game you liked.

I really can't see how enjoying M:OM could be considered anything but wrong. Don't worry, the fact that you're unsure shows that there is still hope for you.

Yes it is and you need to seriously re-think your life.
MoM is one of the few things in this world without redemption. It took one of my favorite characters in video gaming history and marinated it in complete crap. It took one of my favorite series and removed all that I loved. It took all of the progress made by the Metroid Prime trilogies and t-bagged it in favor of absolutely retarded gameplay.
It should never have existed, and even seeing that anyone liked it fills me with rage.

Yes it is wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself! How dare you try to be an individual and like something that others hate! Now get off your high horse and conform with the masses! *grumbles.. damn kids and their bell bottoms and refer weed..*

I don't think it's the best Metroid game, nor do I think it's worth fifty bucks, but I thought it was very enjoyable. Perfect game to play this snowy weekend.

If people are getting upset with you for liking it, then they have insecurity issues. The only person you have to worry about regarding your opinions and tastes is yourself. More power to you for going against the grain, pal.

I hope not or I'm really wrong.

I could see why people could hate it but I didn't. I really liked it and it's probably my favorite Metroid game.

No, there's nothing wrong with likeing things that aren't great. I love Arnold Swartzenegger movies. xD Commando.

Bad movie.

But goddamn is it a joy ride.

Really, Metroid Other M is not a great game, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy/love it.
