No it isn't thankfully- we just need to support indie development more than those AAA games, because that is where the innovation and fun is at. I mean, did you see the winners to the Extra Credits awards? most of them were indies. Plus, with Steam EA's origin and other stuff, making games is more accessible than ever. this is meant to be reassuring. i hope it is :)

Just look at the new games coming out. A Halo clone, a God of War clone, a Call of Duty clone, and countless sequels. The indie game market seems to be the only place with orginal games, and that's dying too, because more and more clones are coming out to capitalize on the succes of other games. (I'm looking at you, fortresscraft! And a ton of zombie games that are somehow released on the indie market, my other eye is on you!)

So is gaming dead?
Stop looking at AAA games and you'll be fine.

I don't think a media can die. I mean, have books, movies, plays died? No, because they can't, and I think that with the rise of the Indie scene videogames may well be at the "no-death* point.

No. Sure the AAA industry has grown a bit stale in the past years but I still hold out some hope that they can break free of that. We just need to find something that appeals to us and the mass market.

You have got to be kidding me.

*sigh* look, just because things are starting to look a bit same-y doesn't mean that gaming is dead. The entire history of mankind has been based around building upon previous ideas. Aside from the few spurts of innovation that occur because of the few truly creative people we get every now and then, most of society is about the copying and refining what has already been done.

Now if you were to critically view a game from today and one of the games from back in the "good old days, the current gen one is superior in almost every aspect. Better graphics, better action, better sound, better premise, and overall better execution. Not everyone is a Michelangelo in society, but we in the future here have the advantage of hindsight.

And honestly, the main reason why all those "creative masterpiece"s like Mario and such were popular is because there wasn't much else on the market. I can guarantee you that if Mario had originally come out in this day and age rather than when it did, very few people would buy it. If you'd never grown up with the Mario franchise, would you be willing to fork out sixty bucks for a game about some Italian plumber eating drugs and fighting various incarnations of turtles in order to repeatedly try and save the same damn ditzy princess from a whole bunch of castles? I doubt it very much.

It's nowhere near being dead in my opinion. It's got a lot more steam left in it. The world will always have a market for games, whatever they may be. And Video games will continue to be made and sold for many years to come, I'd give it 2 centuries maximum until it starts dying.

Sure there will be game slumps, but I don't think we are in one at the moment.

So... by your logic , if games are not original , then gaming is dead? If that's true then gaming is dead, buried , sent to hell and is dining with hitler. Only so many original ideas can be had. There were mario clones , tetris clones( inorite ? ) , Sonic clones and many more clones back in the day. Today is no different, imitation is the best form of flattery no ?

So two awesome games ( hopefully) is enough to save a dying industry ( if it is indeed dying.) ? I think not , but here's to hoping those games will be as good as we are all hype out it will be.

OT: Gaming is not dead, but there are less and less original games like OP said, but more money is generated by video games. For us who have been gaming for decades, games seem bland , and boring, because we have seen much, and have played much in our lifetime as gamers. For newcomers and casual gamers ( not a derogatory term ) most of these ideas seem new and fresh and awesome, as it should. Also people are comfortable with what they know, as they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it . But that logic is killing certain genres, like horror , RPGs and RTS. But we as a gaming society need to support original ideas, buy games that differ from the norm, and show developpers that, WE ARE INTERESTED IN SOMETHING DIFFERENT. That they WILL sell, and we WILL buy them . WE as gamers need to show that , we support innovation , even though it might not be perfect at first. Mirrors edge ( to name a game ) was quite original and different , i really liked how that was different , and would actually like to see a improved version of that game, it could lead to something new, but because alot of people dismissed it , we are not likely to see a Mirrors edge 2 . Tis a pity really.
I'm all for innovation and new things, but Mirror's Edge had quite possibly the worst story I've ever had to experienced, combined with clunky movement and complex controls for simple movements. So yeah. I wouldn't buy Mirror's Edge 2, because in my opinion, the first was bad enough that a sequel would be overkill.

As much as we should all support innovation, don't forget what that can lead to if we blindly support it without criticising it.

It leads to Peter Molyneux talking about the various ways you can dress up your dog.

I reckon you should rephrase the question "Is Gaming Innovation Dead?"

But, you make a fair point OP. And it's a question that has no easy answer.

This is how proliferation works. Knowing your reviewers and/or using Gamefly instead of making those $60 purchases on untested games is the way to avoid crap, and a sea of crap always follows a work of brilliance. I'm not sure whether to be more unhappy with myself for how gross that metaphor was or how upset Orwell would've been with me over it.

Let me ask you this: is Rock dead?

Short answer: no. Not at all. Look at your collection of games and count the number that you would/will play through again. That should also answer your question.

Well I meant those as examples, not the entire list, I wasn't going to bother looking up every single title coming out this year, but theres still Deus Ex, Dead Island, Bastion and From Dust just came out, etc

Clones? Let's see...

Dead island? Not really a clone. Space marine? Some may say it's a gears clone, but the gameplay seems very different. Skyrim? Is it really so bad a sequel? After all this time? I could go on.

As much as there are soulless franchises and greedy corporations, I'd say gaming is alive and well.

@OP

Hi.

I'm one of the few here who was alive (11 yrs old) at the time of the 1983 gaming crash. By contrast, you are living in a time when U.S. society is saturated with gaming. We have games on consoles, PC, phones, and many other devices. Gaming's influence has reached all forms of media and all age groups. Working in gaming is considered a valid career path instead of a stupid fantasy that indicates that you haven't grown up. I won't presume to speak for other countries but I imagine it's similar for just about all non-third-world countries.

Where did you come up with the idea that gaming is dying?

Because it's similar? Friend, one of the minor reasons that I'm dropping gaming as this generation ends is that, at my age, even the non-COD/Madden/Sequel-Heavy titles have the uncomfortable feeling of "I've played this before" so I am not wholly unsympathetic to the statement of being in a rut. Seriously, there are only so many evil corporations/malevolent gods/president-stealing ninja clans you can beat before it starts seeming a little too familiar. Innovation in gameplay is also rare. Whether you're talking COD, Halo, or Half-Life 2, the basic gist of all FPS games is "Target pops up. You shoot it in the face." Fighting games? "Memorize special moves and a few combos. Punch opponent in the face." And so on.

So I can understand it feeling very similar. But dying? Not by a long shot.

I think a little competition is good amongst the companies and really, has anything ever truly been original.

So what if squeals are coming out? That's not a bad thing. I loved demons souls and oblivion, so I'm really looking forward to Dark Souls and Skyrim.
