Is Halloween a dumb, stupid, useless excuse of a 'Holiday'?

It use to be a holiday about the dead in Ireland. The candy thing got started as the Irish use to leave out treats to prevent Ghouls and Ghosts from entering there home.

Besides Halloween is actually a pretty important thing in some cultures. In Latin America it's the gathering day for the Day of the Dead celebration. In China it's a day in which people would leave there pictures of the recently deceased in the streets along with offerings and candles to guide them to the afterlife.

I love Halloween, was just anarchy as a kid. Getting in egg fights and flour bombs and trip wires between our friends and the kids from the other street.

Now it's the a usual alcohol fuelled weekend night just with fake blood and masks.

Chin chin, fellow beasts of the underworld.

You mean like Easter is celebrating the supposed resurrection of some Jewish guy by eating a bunch of chocolate eggs?

Or how we roast Turkey (UNT ONLY TURKEY!) for Christmas, put up a pine tree with tinsel and eat brussel sprouts to celebrate some Jewish guy's birth - even though he was more likely born in the Summer than in Midwinter [http://www.hcna.us/columns/x-birth.html].

So stop being a bore, dress up in a silly costume, go out and get chocolate/booze and enjoy yourself.

Because - frankly - life is too short to not do so.[/quote]

hurray for facts :D

I've never been trick-or-treating, and we hardly get any trick-or-treaters. My town is boring.

I think it's much more popular in America. Currently the most exciting thing that's happened this Halloween is the special event in Kingdom of Loathing.
Gawd I havn't played that game in a long time. Don't remember my friggin' password anymore.

OT: I think the holiday is a sham, but I do love me some free candy.

Personally, i think that halloween isn't much of a 'holiday' as it is really just an excuse for shops to sell lots of sweets and for the buyers of said sweet items to have them taken away from them by a bunch of beggers (or 'trick-or-treaters')
Not if I have anything to do with it. If at least one trick/treater doesn't have nightmares from coming to my door, I'll have failed.

Doesn't matter what its real meaning was meant to be, I get to finish the sweets that the kids didn't take!

It was originally founded on the basis of you going to your dead loved ones and praying.

Then kids screwed it up.
actually the parents screwed it up trying to make it fun for the kids.

Back where I'm originally from, we don't celebrate Halloween. Well, not in the "take bed sheet, cut out eyes, smear ketchup on it and go beg people for candy" kind of way. No, we go out and light candles for those who left this world for a (presumably) better one.

1st off, shouldnt this have been a poll?

And actualy halloween was originaly a peagan holiday that has changed over the years. Not unlike how Christmas used to be about Jesus' birthday

It's basically the Day of the Dead, only in one day and not Mexican. Halloween comes from Hallowe'en, the "e'en" being short for "even" which is, in turn, short for evening. The "hallow" comes from the "All Hallows" part of the holidays original name, All Hallows Even.

So no, it's not a dumb, useless excuse of a holiday. It's much like Christmas. Corrupted by media and business.

If I'm able to dress up in a cool costume, get free candy, have an excuse to watch endless horror films and maybe even cause some good old halloween mischief I say "Why not".

I don't think this is a question that needs asking really... Who cares if it was created for the profit of companies or for no reason at all, its just a bit of fun and helps keep things interesting.
Just a day to do something different
