And as for inovation? 'The Theatre', which was added in Halo 3, was has only been adopted by the CoD series in Black Ops.
It's also in Modern Warfare 3... although it admittedly doesn't work as smoothly as it did in Halo 3.

Yes indeed it is, I was merely stating that it took up untill Black Ops for them to intergrate such a feature. Also, that other series such as Gears, still haven't.

CoD, Skyrom, WoW etc. etc. more marketing does not mean better game!
Are you seriously suggesting none of those games, even when spelt correctly, do not owe their popularity to their actual content, only to their marketing?

Have you not seen games come out with big marketing to actual flop because of content? Dakitana? Duke Nukem Forever? Quake 4? etc etc.

Halo wasn't any good to begin with, really. That it got a huge console following as a franchise is mostly a testament to the lack of good alternatives and actually decent FPS games/controls on those gaming platforms.
How is that not a good thing? It was the best at what it did, but multiple things have come out and overtaken it since than.

I never really was a big fan of Halo, but I'd say it lost it's steam sometime around 3.

Halo lost its steam the minute microsoft got their hands on it and made it a XBOX exclusive.
Once upon a time i would cry from joy watching adverts like this:

Typing on an iPad, gimme a break. :)
Ofcourse Skyrim is an awesome game, but it's far too overhyped, like that campaign they had to name children something like Dragonborn for free games.
Games like CoD and Halo, the basic shooters and sportsgames like PES and Fifa and Madden only sell well because of marketing and popularity. Never on their own merit.
This leads to high sales which leads to friends of buyers to buy the game too for multiplayer or through a local cool factor or maybe even peer pressure. This leads to even higher sales which leads to giant profit which leads to publishers ordering more of similar games which leads to far less variation and more of similar or the same games (CoD vs. Battlefield and MoH). This is survival of the fittest, really. Until only tall, blonde and blue eyes are left, or in this case, grayish brown with chainsaw rifles and cover walls :p

Hasn't Bungie games said several times that it would end the Halo series, only to bring out another new game?

Yeah, that's why.
Nope. They have only said that once, and they meant it. Now, another company is carrying on with it, because the idea of respecting an artist's creation is foreign to Microsoft.

You seriously think Halo is greyish-brown?

I'd argue that Halo has plenty of its own merits. Brilliant enemy AI, lovely aesthetics, a rather compelling story (though this is easily the most subjective item here), smooth controls, seamless integration of vehicle sections into normal gameplay, and a really, really good soundtrack.

I know The Escapist aren't exactly big Halo fans, but I'll say this.

Has Halo lost it's steam? the answer is NO. the game is as popular as ever it's was just overshadowed by games that have bigger steam.

Halo is still a big system seller, older fans who lest were replaced by new fans, it's gameplay and multiplayer are so good that it can never be ignored.

Personally, as someone who never really saw much in the halo series, i dont think it had much steam of its own to begin with (dont get me started on the fans or hype as the only series with worse fans that ive met is cod).
Oh and once a series is rescued from the scrap heap, then its just asking for trouble.
But then i just remember reading an article about halo at its height and it said that halo was loved because you got to be the hero and save the day, so apparently the last 25 years of gaming just vanished once halo appeared, but its that kinda stupidity that i as an outsider encounter a lot, or it could just be me meeting the wrong fans.

Having said that, a lot of the halo fans ive known also tend to be xbox fanboys and as i stopped seeing the point in any kind of console wars since the current generation came out and the xbox been the most badly built console ever made (that might have changed recently, but red ring of death used to be fairly common), so that might colour my view of halo and its fans, but really i dont seee the need for a halo 4, or MWs 1-4 :p

I'd say Halo overstayed it's welcome, and that is coming from someone that enjoyed the series up til ODST. After H3, when Halo Wars was announced then released followed by ODST, I just knew MS was going to go nuts milking the franchise. Tbh, MS needed to let Halo go out on a high note with Halo 3. Bungie had stated after making H3 they were done with the Halo Universe and wanted to move on. However, they were contractually obligated by MS to make what MS wanted them to make. Hence, ODST and Reach.

What Wars, ODST, and Reach really did was this; over-saturate the market with the Halo brand. Worse yet, they lacked the 2 characters that make Halo, well, Halo. Those being the Halo itself and the MC. I can understand not having MC in a Halo game, the universe is huge. However, having Halo games with no Halo? That, to me, is like shooting oneself in the foot intentionally.

While ODST and Reach are competently executed games, it doesn't take long to see, and feel, Bungie had lost the heart to really make Halo games. It comes across clearly in the poorly implemented AA's in Reach, to how badly the vehicles now handle, Bloom and the awful Cr system just to name a few items. Personally, I'd much rather the Halo franchise end than see it get milked for all it's worth.

I'm glad it's losing or has lost steam. Being able to jump 30 ft in the air was retarded. The outfits they wore were also retarded as were the guns.

Look, dude, I know irony can be hard to spot on the internet, but that's... excessive.

If you ask me, Halo lost it's steam after Halo: Combat Evolved was released. It went really downhill after that.

I am a Halo fan til I die, but that's only for single player and that universe. I do like Multiplayer from time to time, and especially firefight, but there's something aout unloading a clip into a guy without him dying, and then him meleeing you and he gets the kill. Some of the modes are fun, Swat, infection, but regular multiplayer can suck my ass as far as I'm concerned.

Now on to Duty. I played the first Call of Duty game, and when I say first, I mean the world war 2 one, before I played the first Halo, and I enjoyed it because I could just run around like an asshole and shoot everything. I've played all the new ones, and I prefer the multiplayer because you can pump a whole clip into his chest and have him die. It's faster pace, I can actually do quite well, and it is fun.

Now to answer your question, I've loved all Halo games, I thought Reach was better than Halo 3 story-wise, but it's only the story that really gets me. I am excited for Halo 4, and will probably go to a launch. And I have moved to Duty kind of, but only because the multiplayer is fun

In terms of popularity? Well, it seems that way. Personally, I stopped playing Halo after 2, then about 6 months ago picked up Reach and loved it. Maybe it is losing some steam on the forums, but I think lately the games quality have increased. I also mostly play for single player... so make of that what you will.

It's mainly because Call of Duty have been drawing players like a lamp draws flys. Halo Reach was impressive, it sold 10 million copies and was the #1 played game on Xbox live for a solid year, how many other games can make that claim? People set their standards unreasonably high, Halo is still good and popular, more people just like Call of Duty is all.
Not to mention that the multiplayer is still very active. On a normal day there are usually at least 60,000 at any given moment, on slow days it is 20,000 at any given moment, and 90,000 to 100,000 on best days.

Right now on Bungie.net, it says that with in the last 24 hours there has been 457,316 players playing the multiplayer.

It's most likely not where it use to be, but I don't consider it losing much steam.

I can't wait for Halo 4, and I hope to round out the 360 they make an Anniversary Edition of Halo 2 as well.
