I haven't seen anything in Halo that really shows the originality of the franchise - it's pretty standard sci-fi stuff, really.
Star Wars, in it's day, was a very original cross between science fiction and the stereotypical medieval fantasy cliches, and some how it all just worked. And, of course, Lightsabres.

Until there are more people other than just the stereotypical immature male American teenager talking smack with a shamfeully high pitched voice on Xbox Live, and legions of disproportionally male obsessed fans dressing as Marines and Brutes and Master Chiefs carting around replica weapons to game conventions and selling pathetically over priced items on online auctions site, Halo doesn't even come _close_ to Star Wars.
there is allot more to Halos story than you think, you just have to look. for example, In the novels there are some great stories about the inner workings of the covenant and how its social structure is under the constant threat of a total breakdown while the only thing keeping them together is a zealot mad with power and leading his people on a path of destruction
The books are even shittier than the game. Halo 3 won't be classic sci fi because really, when you get down to it, it's Aliens with a dude.
well your logic can easily backfire because when you really get down to star wars its aliens with a dude but both stores are good because of all the other things going on, wether that be the miseries of the forerunners or the powers of the force
I must have missed the star wars film where Luke was was killed and his body was used by a rampaging alien to reproduce. I didn't see too many space marines either.

I liked Halo 3. It wasn't quite as good as the original but it was sure as hell better than 2. The story was alright and I would have to say I agree with Yahtzee as it being not bad but only average.
well its not hard to be better than halo 2 or any halo game really. I personally dislike the entire halo series, but halo 2 is the worst. Halo will never be like star wars. halo is shallow and has a generic storyline.

Time for an attack of ACADAMIA!

The reason why Star Wars has such universal appeal can be summed up by the following article.

Well done!

I am reading Hero with a Thousand Faces at the moment. I suggest anyone who is interesting in this subject take a look at Joseph Campbell's work. While it is academic, it is definitely rewarding to read

Wait, Halo had a story beyond the constantly refilling waves of generic enemies? Comparing the two is just insulting to Star Wars. You have to remember that Star Wars has had 30 years to cool down. I would bet that in 30 years the average kid will have never heard of Halo.

I expect Halo to eventually be relegated to the box of properties not popular enough to consistently revive. It's really not on the same level as Star Wars or Mario or even Sonic the Hedgehog. It's just not that great a premise, big men shooting aliens in space is just too generic.

And I HAVE played Halo 1 (ok) and 2 (repetitive and somewhat boring). If Halo 3 comes out for PC I might play that too.

I think it has the potenetial to be as medicore as the Starwars franchise. Just look at how the games are arranged compared to the movies...

1) Halo(The 2nd best one) 1) Starwars Episode IV: A New Hope(the 2nd best one)

2) Halo 2(The Best one) 2) Starwars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back( The best one)

3) Halo 3(The most dissapointing one) 3) Starwars Episode VI: (the most dissapointing)

Now all Halo needs are 3 more bad games to be worth the amount of crap like the new starwras movies and the series will have been milked just like the Starwars franchise...
To me, the first Halo is the best of the three. And about the story, I don't think any other story has more than one threat to humanity. Halo has 3. Zealous aliens, rogue robots, and space zombies.

You obviously haven't seen Star Wars.
-Stormtroopers
-Clone Troopers
For things that weren't on film:
-Mandalorians(like Boba Fett)
-Sith Soldiers

As both a huge Star Wars and Halo fan I have to say no.

Halo's universe is deep and complex true, but it doesn't have the potential for expansion like the Star Wars universe.

See, as of now Star Wars has hundreds of stories in settings that span thousands of years and they all are distinctly "Star Wars." Halo has eight and a half stories (Halo: The Flood counts as half) all set during the same war or immediately before it and there's very little reference to anything but that war except the vague Terminals in Halo 3.

Or another perspective Halo is about the Halos and things that relate to or interact with them. Star Wars is a about conflicts amongst the stars and the things that relate to those conflicts.

And also the relative niche appeal of both the sci-fi genre and video games kind of holds Halo back from massive mainstream appeal. At best it might make a successful and relatively popular movie series (like say, the Bourne movies) that encourages a few people to check out the original source material (or more likely just the books).

are there Halo conventions yet?

has a couple been married while wearing cardboard Master Chef armor?
Well, no.

Not MJOLNIR armor, but hundreds of couples have met playing Halo and I know of one instance in which a man asked a woman to marry him by sending her a Halo 3 screenshot.

But I don't see how your argument your argument is valid, did Star Wars have either of those less than a year after Episode VI was released?

Of course, I agree with you. You just aren't making apt points.

Yes. Microsoft will make sure of it.
I like what this guys saying :D
I can picture Bill Gates setting up his new operating system so that all the themes are halo related haha.
Forcing it into the minds of the consumers and sitting at home in his specially designed Master Chief armour holding a battle rifle and fighting 3d Covenant created by his naked profiteering...

I'm a little ashamed in that I haven't actually read "Hero with a Thousand Faces" personally, I prefer my mythological studies focusing on myth-ritual and root social norms as depicted by myth, basically anything that relates to my more focused interest in Religious History, but I have come across the theory many, many times.

I'm also glad someone actually appears to have read one of my more academic posts for once. Thanks!

Not even close.
Halo is no where near as interesting as the star wars series.
Firstly, the star wars series has a main character. Something the halo series is completely devoid of. Secondly, the star wars series has a story not just "Aliens over there, go kill them. More aliens over here, go kill them too.".
The first halo was the best and the series should have stopped there. The second one's basic point was to overuse what made the first one great until you can no longer play the series without being completely bored. Halo 3 wasn't enjoyable in the least except for the multi player. The best thing that ever came out of halo was probably red vs blue but then again because of red vs blue huge masses of 15 year old children thought they could also go on the internet and create lolz. Halo is like star wars like Linkin park is the Beatles.

AHH! An acadamia attack! Quick, put up your ignorance shields!

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Also, my opinion has been stated by alot of the posts. Merely average, won't even be remembered in 30 years, probably not even in 10 or 15.

They're good games.
And the books are relatively interesting, with microsoft pumping millions into more Halo related projects.
Are todays youths going to grow up with Halo as their Sci-Fi fad?
It can never be Star Wars because it doesn't have Billy Dee Williams, Samuel L. Jackson, and Harrison Ford. Lack of star power. End of argument.

The kind of person who thinks Halo has a good story clearly has never read a book.

Or even played a standard RPG.

Star wars games for the most part suck. Honestly, they aren't comparable because Star Wars started in movie form and then progressed on, whereas Halo still hasn't had a movie.

another difference is that star wars killed off one of it's main protagonists early in the story, and i don't really recall anyone important being killed off in the halo series that wasn't an antagonist.
What about Cpt. Keyes?
