Is it cheating?

It's not cheating but it's unsportsmanlike conduct.

It's also another in a long list of reasons why I'm very glad I don't own that game.

It's not cheating, since they aren't abusing a glitch. The tactical knife is there for a reason.
However, the Stinger abuse that was going off a few weeks back was cheating since it was a flaw in the games code.

Per my experience, running the wall has few effective strategies. You can be the blatant shotgunning, grenade throwing, floor stomping trudger, guaranteeing that you show up on EVERYONE's minimap. You can be the silenced sub machine gunner, advancing at a meager pace, and sometimes *gasp* camping.

OOOOOORRRRRR

You can take complete advantage of your silence, speed, and insta-kills, running through the level, knifing everyone foolish enough to get within sprinting distance.

It is a founded, and completely legitimate strategy.

To me if a game lets you do it, it's not cheating. Simple as that. The strategy that you mention in the OP I wouldn't call cheating.
Yeah, but some games let you enter cheat codes as well. I think the question is more whether or not you're considered a douche when doing it. Just play the game as it's meant to be played. The guns aren't there for nothing, knife is a tertiary weapon for a reason.
I have never played a game where cheat codes are allowed in PvP multiplayer. The game is meant to be played however the hell you want to play it, as long as it doesn't interfere with the games programming.
Ah, the good old days when you could whip out the console, ramp up the gravity and squash everyone against the ceiling. Half-Life forever...

There's a difference between "cheating" and "being shitty." Camping, in my opinion, is shitty playing, but not cheating, because doing so doesn't require a glitch in the game, or a code, or anything along those lines. So long as you're playing the game within the parameters that the developers originally intended -- in other words, not exploiting an error -- you're not cheating.

Now, I don't know whether or not using the knife falls into the same category as camping, as I haven't played MW2. I'll leave that up to you guys to discuss.

Its not cheating, its a n00b tactic. I dont know who called it cheating... thats like someone calling the knife a glitch... Sure there are glitches that involve the knife but that doesnt make the knife a glitch.

But with the knife being a tertiary weapon that means it wasnt meant to be used often. Like grenades, except you dont have infinite grenades... and grenades arent always a one hit kill.

But yes, the knife moves you instantly to the player. Thats something that needs to be sorted out because that allows you to avoid short range shots that are the only things that can save you from a knifer being close by.

To anyone who calls using a tertiary weapon cheating,

Could the developers have made mistakes with knife implementation?? Maybe. But its not cheating.

It isn't cheating, you've just got to accept that people wont like it. It's annoying, because you CAN do it, it makes this less fun for everyone else.

You have to look at the big picture... "its in the game"... a glitch is in the game so stop excusing actual cheaters.

Knifing increases akimbo 1887s... a patch came out to lower the power and range of these... what excuse did they use before the patch? "Its in the game."

Using n00b tactics only decreases the fun for the new players and people who refuse to use n00b tactics, the new players are more likely to pick up n00b tactics and claim it is "skill" after the n00bs that killed them when they were starting out, laughed at them for having 2 kills and 20 deaths and saying they were crap because people were n00b tubing, camping and knifing.

EDIT: Is it cheating? No.

Does that mean you should do it? No.

Does that mean you can bully people who have less kills than you because you get cheap kills? No, and you should be reported for doing so.

I'd say cheating is the exploitation of something within a game to make someone with next to no chance of achieving anything, achieve something.
So you could argue that using the knife as a main weapon is "cheating", but it's easily countered by uh, SHOOTING THEM IN THE FACE!

I do sometimes use the knife as a main weapon, but only when bored, and I know I won't get very far with it because no matter how fast you run bullets are always faster.

That's not cheating, that's just being an asshole and ruining fun for everybody else, just so that you could get some cheap kills.

I wouldn't say so, as stabbing is just as hard to do as any other kill. The only way to get a definite kill is to backstab, and that happens rarely. Most often players will circle around you, shotgun you or rifle you to a bullet sandwich before you can run up to them.

why people make up random "rules" in games boggles my mind. If the developers include some type of weapon that can kill your opponent, then that is what it is meant for. Use it, be happy, laugh at everyone that accuses you of cheating because you are beating them.

As a knifer [when I get the game winning kill, it is always by knifing, from behind, when he is about to kill one of my team members.] It is not, you have snipers shoot us.

How does this 'cheat' prevent you from being shot or exploded? I mean, you have to run right into someone's face to stab them. Unless you lurk near corners, drop from buildings, or play a good game with effective tactics, you're going to die a lot easier than the people with moderate skill and a gun.

Why not, you know, just snipe them?

Unless I've misunderstood the nature of this 'cheat'?

EDIT - Also, on the topic of camping: what're people's definition of 'camping'? I've heard it used to define a player who sits in the same place for a long time because it works for them. This, I do no consider cheating...I consider it being, well, tactical? When I've sat in the same place for some period of time everyone decides is 'wrong', then they often know where I am and either take me out or avoid me, forcing me to move to the next place; this leaves me incredibly vulnerable as a sniper, out in the open, with only a pistol and no-scoping to defend myself.
Sitting still next to a spawn-point, or where enemies are unable to prevent in a moment of vulnerability: dick-move.
