Is it just me or are we starting to live in V for Vendetta times?

Its not really V for Vendetta yet, the politicians (GOP and Democrats) are still fighting each other for control...

As for those saying that they want to leave the country because of the current conditions, I pity them. Instead of running away, fight for freedoms and change. Use protests, peitions, flyers, ballots to make your voice heard. Become educated in politics, research candidate's history. Basically, do everything in your power to make your voice heard. If you get shoved aside or censored, protest and boycott.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.", -Edmund Burke

"It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey to the active. The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt." -John Philpot Curran

That's probably exactly what people would have thought in the 60's, or the 70's. Or anytime there's a noticeable cultural change.

In 20 years, people will be saying it again about other changes that are happening then.
I second this.

People always start worrying when cultural shifts occur, and they always will.

That old saying of "Every 50(or hundred?) years there is suppose to be a revolution to address the stagnation of the government". I think we're a few years overdue, though in the time we live in it doesn't seem like we necessarily need violence to get our point across.

No, I don't think that it is like V for Vendetta. I think that modern day culture is so damned relaxed and mellow about everything, and it's legitimately making people stupid. Young kids and teenagers simply don't care, or have no idea what they are talking about. Everybody feels violated, and the government is just... so bad. So very very bad.

Hard to say. We don't need to start building the bunkers just yet.

You didn?t care when the government decided it could spy on you without a warrant. You didn?t care when they started telling you what you could eat. You didn?t care when your kids? education was turned into indoctrination. You didn?t care when they were more worried about military veterans than Islamic terrorists. You didn?t care when they spent so much money that our entire economic system may co?llapse. You didn?t care when they gave billions of your money to unions and corporations that were their political contributors. You didn?t care when inert cosmetic features on guns were felonies. You didn?t care when they made it a fucking crime to not have government approved health insurance.

All of these things were done in your name. On your behalf. To help you, protect you, take care of you. Each time you gave them more power and gave away more of your freedom. Each time you believed them when they said they were protecting you, or helping the less fortunate, or sticking it to ?the rich? who ?aren?t paying their fair share?.

Each time you applauded their efforts. Mocked those that were concerned. Called them uncaring or racist or alarmist or stupid. Each time you asked for more. You begged them to take care of you, protect you, right wrongs, enforce equality.

But now that your Internet porn and bit torrents are threatened, NOW you care?

It?s too late for all that, kids. Turning off Wikipedia for a couple days isn?t going to win back the freedoms we?ve pissed away. It isn?t going to undo decades of expanding government power. They?ve already decided there?s nothing they can?t do, no law they can?t pass.

We watched it happen. We let it happen. We have the country we deserve.

So go ahead, post a rant about SOPA on your blog. Link to Ron Paul?s web page. Pretend you?re doing something. It?ll make you feel better. Then you will go back to business as usual and so will they.

Democracy in action. Isn?t it beautiful?
the biggest counter to this argument is many of the people being effected by this have had no say in any of that stuff, as someone who is only 20 years old ive only had the right to vote for 2 years, so essentialy i had no say in any of these previous descions, thats why arguments like this annoy me, i didnt want any of that stuff, but a 15 year old cant exactly vote against them now can he?
Also a very good point.

How much exactly can expect from a person in High School? Occupy Protesters, SOPA protesters, the majority of us are most likely from the new generation that is sick of this bullshit.

No one asked me what my opinion was, and if they did, they'd have known I objected to all of that and more. I filled out my petitions, I mailed my congressmen, I called my senators, I told the people I knew; it didn't do a fucking thing. I was the one being laughed at as paranoid and unpatriotic. None of these things were done on my behalf.

Put another way, Mike Kupari can go fuck himself.

Not quite.. but almost... give it a few years on this track and America will either be there or a cyberpunk, Deus Ex, world where corporations hold all of the power and politics are just ventures in lining ones pockets... heh like it isn't already already...<.<

But hopefully it won't come to that until I'm out of College because than I'm getting the fuck out of this country before I get gunned down for being brown and therefore a threat to American freedom as the conservatives would say...

Slowly but surely. Wouldn't surprise me, if America were to continue down this path, Norsefire would be the #1 party, albeit made up of a combination of both parties instead of beating them in an election.

Um... but I did care.

It's just that I can't vote till I turn 18, which is fortunately in 5 days.

Nah, it wont end up like V. Thats WAY too optimistic. Its gonna be either:
1) The end of civilization as we know it
2) The end of the world
3) 1984

Woot, pageking.

In short, no. A longer form asnwer would be that it is never just you and that an anti piracy bill does not denote the beginning of a hellish facist regime in which people lose their lives.
I imagine any uprising by a lot of people on this website would be more "June Rebellion" than "War of Independence".

Nope, you're just paranoid and/or desperate for some hardship.
And you just missed the entire point of that scene, she was shot for dressing like V and supporting him.

The vandalism was not the point of the unprovoked shooting.
OK. <watches ten-year-old girl get gunned down for dressing up as a political fugitive>

Better? It's still not remotely close to America today.
No its closer to Britain in the 60s, the UK Government actually did lock people up without trial and shoot teenagers dead in the streets.

I honestly don't see it even in a lighter sense. I can still have my freedoms and things aren't overly censored. I must polity disagree.

Yes. It is just you. There is no government official religion. There is no gov't propaganda only channel (ie "England prevails!"). There are no official govt hit squads that everyone knows about. There are no curfews. There are no extreme reactions(gunning down) to vandalism and other minor legal issues.

As for the people saying "Well...I'll just go England." It is my understanding that England actually has fewer legal obstacles to wire tapping and what not than the US. Could someone tell me if I am wrong please?

With sopa and the ndaa bills, I feel like we're starting to live in V for vendetta times, mass censorship, people being detained without trial never to be heard from again, hell I'd move to Canada or Britain but then they'd just ship my USAss back. Anyone else feel the same way?
Ironically V for Vendetta is set in britian. It is worrying to think of how powerful governments are getting since people have fought so hard to get rights that are now slowly being eroded but i dont think the government can exercise the amount of power that is worth worrying about. If things do get out of hand then people including me and you will hopefully stop it as people before us have done.

People should be wary of those whom rule them. Rulers should be wary of people.

Hey UK/Australian escapists! American anthro dragon here. How's it in the UK/Australia? Because if America keeps on track with these kinds of bills and freedom-limiting actions, I may reconsider my citizenship here.
Well in England right now its alright, but to be honest we have a posh twat as a priminister and a damn pushover as his right hand man, but on the upside we have a pretty stable economy and free healthcare. We also have a very diverse culture right now, with many polish and Asian communities popping up everywhere.

So if you can stand a man with a shiny forehead in power we will be happy to take you.

P.S: We also have very good British comedy shows if that's your thing.

And your solution is autralia!? I think it's worst there . So much censorship compared to other first world countries.

OT: nope , well not yet , the ONLY reason this got so much flak was because it had to do with the internet. Had it been about anything else , people wouldn't have cared . I think they were fighting for the right to be lazy more than anything else. Imagine just for a moment the internet was shut down ( i know that wasn't the point but just imagine ) , people would have to *gasp* go outside and do stuff!
