As far as I know, the game is the very definition of nerdy. Somebody who consumes copious quantities of quality comic books is not as nerdy as somebody who is perfectly normal except for a love of D&D.

"Here we have a game that combines the charm of a Pentagon briefing with the excitement of double-entry bookkeeping. I don't get it." - Cecil Adams [http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/278/whats-the-deal-with-dungeons-and-dragons]

I'm with Cecil on this one. Take up tax accounting if you want to spend your time futzing around with numbers all day.
I bet those generals in the Pentagon play D&D just to get their minds off their actual work...

"Ok, let's say Korea is Zerg territory..."
"What? They're next to Japan! That makes them a form of dark elves!"
"Yeah! I thought we were sticking with Tolkien here!"
"Tolkien? I thought Wizards of the Coast..."
"I'm the 5-star general, so I say they're Zerg! Anyway, South Korea is an ally, so they're like...I don't know...the Zerg that the UED controlled-"
"Wait...so we're the United Earth Directorate? Don't we get our asses kicked in the end?"
"...shut up. Where was I? Oh, yes. So, that makes North Korea the hostile Zerg controlled by Kerrigan-"
"Wouldn't that make Kim Jong-il the Queen of Blades? Eww."

...and etc.

Yes, it's Nerdy, but why should you care? D&D is fucking awesome! You also get bonus XP if you show up to a game with Mountain Dew and Cheetos.

I'm fairly sure playing D&D defines 'nerdy' in the way that being the Pope defines 'Catholic'. In other words, yes.
Whenever people are depicted of the epitome of nerd through D&D, the defining factor in how its nerdy is a matter of how seriously they take it.

These days, as the realm of the geek has broadened, I have found in my personal experience for D&D itself to be considered less nerdy than, say, Final Fantasy. Sad, but true.
Still, it is undeniably geeky, but so is consistently playing anything other than casual games. So, geeky on the intensity level of hobby.
Go for it; I'd play it myself, but the people who own the local game shop creep me out...

Probably, I still want to though, it just sounds like a laugh. Some people hang out and play poker, some people do D&D. One sounds more interesting and cheaper to me (as I suck at poker).

And yet, you'll find that between the snacks, minis, dice, battle-mats, and stationary, Dungeons and Dragons isn't that cheap. It's also excruciatingly time-consuming for the player running the game.

It's not so much addictive as it is enthralling. Who cares what people think. I play Vampire: Dark Ages when I can but it's just so hard to set up games sometimes...

Well, the thread is pretty much done.
I enjoy it. But then, me and my friends are the "nerds" of the school. So maybe it is. But who cares. It's lots of fun, especially with six or so people. Can make for hilarious nights.

Well, dice is sorted as... sigh... "there's an app for that". It does different selection of random number generators. So there's d6, d12, d20... the whole kaboodle. Plus snacks are gonna be needed for both. Plus... I really suck at poker.

I really want to play though I won't become addicted (hopefully)
I used to play it with a group of mates, as long as you have a good group of friends and a dungeon master it's a great laugh

I do not see the dilemma here. Since nerding is awesome, why art thou concerned?

Yes it is very nerdy to play D&D. But let me ask you this: Should you really give a shit whether it's nerdy or not? If you want to play it, then play it and damn what other people think. Embrace your inner nerd!

It's not something you can really get addicted to. And yeah, it's nerdy, but if you want to play it chances are your friends will too, and their opinions are the only ones that matter.
