Of course it's ok to be a gamer. Life is suppose to be about doing what you want, if gaming makes you happy, nothing sould tell you not to.

I love gamers, being a gamer myself! I would much rather spend my time playing video games then any other activity. But maybe that's because i have bad grammar. I think everyone should at least try gaming once!
But on a more political note i think that gaming should be more accepted in todays society. As i feel that people who preach that gaming is "wrong" are misinformed.
one second let me edit that**smug smug**
Yes I do have bad grammar they learned me good in school lol. Gaming is something I do for fun in my spare time when I have it. And I'm glad my ... little post could amuse you. Next time make sure all your I's are capitalized before you go after my grammar. Oh and do make sure you pull out that rod that is up your bum out before you do.

This is why I didn't vote for Obama....or at all becaue I'm underage but that's no the point.

I hate how Obama and also society as a whole is telling me I'm not living my own life right and I need to change, but I don't want to I'm happy just the way I am and I would rather die then give in to this biased crap.

Gamers are Gamers and that's all people should worry about, let us take care of ourselves. I mean we aren't children but I do know that most of us gamers like me just sit on our asses all day and that it's probably not the best thing to do but still it's what makes me happy.

Plus it's better then being "cool" going out partying, impregnating a chick, snorting crack and dieing in a alley next to some homeless guy.

The word Gamer is much more difficult to define, and has several different levels to what you would consider a gamer.

Gamer, by my definition, is a person who has an interest within the electrical entertainment business and partakes in playing video games enthusiastically.

There's the "pretend" gamer, or someone who owns a game or has a system and just calls themselves gamers. They're below casual, as they do play games, but not for interest, they play stuff like Guitar Hero, Tetris and others like that.

Casual gamers are gamers who actually have interest, but nothing beyond putting much effort in (Wii "Anything" (sports etc)) or play a single game excessively (does not include MMO's).

Standard gamer, plays a broad spectrum of games, probably owns more than one system, balances life and games, and takes an interest in it. Like football fan or something.

Hardcore gamers who spend all their free time playing games. Probably missed work or meals, more online than social friends, and when a new game/patch/expansion releases, they buckle down and burn it out to the nth degree. MMO's are usually where you'll see HCGs.

And finally, clumped together are the dipshits, these sailors of the S.S.Failboat are the annoying people, usually borderline fanatic with a game or genre or concept for the game. They are what Weeaboos are to Kotakus for gaming. They are 10 steps too far beyond the normality of gaming. While some would consider HCG this, HCG's are more like the nerds of the gaming world, while the rest fall into geek :3

The media/holloywood always portays gamers as either dipshits or pretenders D:

And also I believe I am the most qualified person to insult gamers, Because I am nearing the definition of it. And I did not want to insult anybody in particular. If anything I find gamers are by far the lesser of two evils.
Nearing the defenition of gamer? As in, you are almost 'someone who plays games, especially video games'? What is this alternate reality wherein you are a genocidal maniac, since it is apparently not a game? Also, in what way are gamers an 'evil'? Because video games, in excess, can be detrimental? The same could be said of anything!

As long as people enjoy what they do and it does not hurt anyone than I say do what you like.

I don't care for being social and I don't care if I do get made fun for being a gamer. I enjoy being a gamer and to me that is all that matters.

Gaming is perfectly ok, as long as you have your priorities in line. Kids who play WoW so long that they die of malnourishment do NOT have these priorities in line.

While I don't have much of a "social life" per se, I do (not to sound conceited) a lot going for me. I have a beautiful (IMO at least) girlfriend, and we're expecting our first child in February. I want to be a professional actor, and at a seminar hosted by a Hollywood bigwig last week I impressed the hell out of the agents there, and one of them made sure not to let me leave the class without telling me that he wanted to sign me immediately and giving me a contract the next day.

My [future] family and my career come first, but 99.9% of my free time has since the age of 3, and more than likely will be spent loyally glued in front of a TV, controller in hand.

No. Gaming is a scourge, a blight upon the world. Its armies are the unwashed, filthy scurrying masses of greasy, socially awkward nerds, just waiting for their chance to ogle, grope and do other sinful actions upon all and every females present in the world. Its weapons are escapism, promises of virtual greatness, ability to exist, unhindered by all the disabilities which would make the typical nerd unfit for real life. Its propaganda is the ever-increasing, always creeping presence of game advertisements in the real media, amidst the real problems like famine, terror and poverty, always swaying people, always trying to corrupt the youth into another unprovoked display of gaming-induced violence. Its...

Wait, where was I? I lost my train of thought. Well, what with all this writing, reading, going to the gym, going out with friends, running, studying at university, learning the guitar and, oh yeah, most of all, GAMING, stuff I've been doing lately, I surely have to be excused!

Ok, seriously now. Yes, it's ok to be a gamer. Not only that, it's perfectly normal to be a gamer. Look around you. I don't know how things are where you live, but here, more and more young people start gaming. Some casually, some more heavily, but all do so whilst maintaining a proper social life, friend circle and other hobbies.

Sure, as with every single bloody thing in this godforsaken world, you can go overboard. I know, personally, people who are used to playing 10-12 hours a day, declining offers to hang out because "Dude, I like, totally have to play some DotA because my net is SOOOO good right now!". But I don't think it's an inherent problem of gaming itself, do you? Because, I also happen to know people like that which are engrossed in reading books. Or bodybuilding. Or alcohol. All of these things are not inherently bad, it's more of a mental problem with the typical person doing it.

So, there you have it.

Barak Obama also wants me to pay for everyone elses health care. I'll stick to my xbox.

As for the rest of your post, I play Halo, CoD, and what ever else with members of my unit. None of us are exactly the nerdy type, as we have all seen front line combat and killed at least one person in anger.

Gaming is a way to unwind and have fun with friends, I don't think that should be viewed as being the exclusive domain of "basement dwelling cheeto feinds"
Where are you deployed to?
Spent 2 deployments with the Stennis battle group over in the persian gulf.
I had a 12 month and then another 14 month deployment to Iraq. I agree: gaming is a great way to unwind. I spent many hours playing games to pass the time.

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with being a gamer, but I don't get why gamers are considered saddo losers that need to get a life. I'm just being myself by playing games, anything wrong with that?

I say, quit gaming, and make a living out of this for real. After all, that's what the government wants from you...

Gaming is a great hobby and it's always nice to unwind by blowing off a few heads. That said, I really don't think that you should let one hobby rule your life. It's possible to be a gamer and still exercise and go out with friends, and it's pretty annoying when people act like these are barriers that can never be breached (and this argument comes from gamers and non-gamers).

This is not off track! You are right on. Insecurity isn't just a side issue, its the core issue. Listen, do you enjoy yourself? Do you have fun? Do you feel productive? Do you keep yourself healthy (eat well, exercise, sleep, etc.)? Do you have friends, either physically or remotely (hey, society on a less-traveling-is-good orgy right now, so who is to say that online communities are any less real, meaningful, or important!) And most importantly, are you happy?

If you can answer "yes" (or at least, "I'm honestly working on it") to all those questions, then who cares what you are doing? You are not hurting people, stealing, or whatever. You can be a complete friekophile gamer and still, say, invent something that makes the world a better place.

Enjoy your games!
Exactly my opinion! It is good to see a sensible reply other than "on a gaming forum, whut lol hax!" And "You have really low self esteem" Actually the first example is fine, its the second example that pisses me off. I mean, I really love been a hardcore gamer, love it to bits, but I made this thread with the intention of provoking thoughtful and dignified response. Not a psychiatry lesson. On another note I have "yes" To all those so I guess I am fine :D. Good response btw.

What would be worse, letting gamers have their way and play games or force them to use their very few social skills in real life :p Methinks number 2 then Barak Obama would have something to worry about!

Everybody plays games these days, it's fine to play games as long as you don't do it to the exclusion of everything else.

There's no moral deficiency in gaming, there's no detriment to society either. But it's the individual's loss for missing out.

There's more to life than just games. I'm an avid gamer, but I recognize the value of the world around me. There's a lot that I like, a lot that I dislike, and a HUGE amount that I haven't even tried. So I do myself a favor and leave myself open to trying new things.

Exercise - Good. Feels great, makes me look better.

Sports - Bad. I have no interest in following any sports. However, football games are fun though, it's fun to scream for a team. I just ask my friends which one to root for.

Drinking - Bad. Makes me feel like shit, and I don't like the cost or the taste. I don't mind others drinking, but they're definitely less fun when they're drunk.

Dancing - Ok. The dancing is fun, the club is not. Too crowded, and everyone is too wasted to be good company.

Camping/hiking - Awesome. Kicking it with my friends, grillin' up good food.

Music - Good. It's essentially the same as games to me, just no scoreboard, but you can still tell if you're getting better at it.

Travel - Good. Pain in the ass, but I enjoy myself once I'm there.

Women - Ok. Not worth the time or energy to have a lot of girlfriends. However, it's definitely worth spending the time and energy on the right girlfriend.

Food - Awesome. Learn to cook, discover new foods and explore.

Books - Good. But I like my other interests more.

Games - Good. It's FUN. Met some of my best RL friends through gaming too. But I also enjoy things besides gaming.

Try different things out.
