Is it possible to make a good Bible game?

Definitely.

It's the game mechanics that make great games. The character and story are just fluff.

Button-mashing platformers like God of War could easily be someone like Samson. RTSs like Age of Empires could let you play as King David. Any "God game" like Populous could let you be God(duh).

I think playing as an angel of war during the Reckoning could be pretty wicked. Playing as an angel during genesis and building the universe then populating with creatures could make for a creative, sandbox game. A good vs evil game where you play for the souls of the living could be neat if done right.

They actually made a game based on the Left Behind book series. Ironically, it looks a lot like GTA.

A good one? Yes. A successful one? No.

The atheists would ***** about propaganda, and the Christians would say it "trivialises" the Bible.
And the rest of the people would simply play the game, and forget about if it has a stance by religious terms. The Athiests can whine all they want, since you're playing a game about historical events, regardless of whether or not it lies in some context with religion.

No one cares if World War II veterans complain about Call of Duty, right?

Well, you'd kind of have to cut out the rape, infanticide, and genocide for it to even sell, but I think it'd make a pretty epic game, either from one of the heroes or Yahweh's point of view. An action-adventure RPG sort of deal.

I'd buy it if it was good.

Sure, make a strategy game about the wars that Israel fought against neighboring tribes in the old testament, or about the final battle between God and Satan in Revelations.

Definitely. There is definite video game potential in there. Only thing is you'd have to probably have it be a made up character in the Biblical world or the game wouldn't be fun at all. Only problem is, only people that ever make them are all concerned about "protecting the kiddies" or wind up making a kid-friendly game and are usually religious people who, it seems to me (and I admit openly I may damn well be wrong), have some intent to try and promote Christianity.

If you had someone using the Bible as the basis for a video game that tried to b a video game and took things as they would have actually looked like, then you could have one hell of a game on your hands.

exactly
I dunno...
If film could pull off stuff based on the bible, why not gaming?
(Passion of the Christ)
(also purely talking in terms of success)

I came in here to recommend a God of War style thrash-em-up featuring Samson vs the entire Philistine nation, but Drunkkitty got there first. An RTS based in Exodus could be interesting as long as you played a bit fast and loose with the technology tree- "What? Yes, many Biblical historians agree that the box that held the Ark of the Covenant was actually a prototype Egyptian Tesla Cannon."

A survival horror game set in Revelations could be fun too, scampering across the ruins of civilization while a seven-headed dragon the size of Unicron gradually fills the sky. Your average well-meaning Christian development house probably wouldn't have the chops for it, though.

Oh, also, I forgot to mention this: Activision did an FPS game once where you play as cyberpunk angels working for God, trying to defeat Neo-satan. It was a kickass concept, but it flunked because the gameplay was so fucking horrible. The graphics and such looked good (Almost like in Unreal tournament 2), but the controls fucked it over.
The game was called Apocalyptica, and I have it.

It's possible to make a good game that uses a biblical setting.

However, it's impossible if the main feature of the game is learning about the bible.

Games that are designed to make people learn fail automatically.

The trick is, to make games that have allusions to the things you want people to learn about. People will learn without knowing they're learning, because they're having fun.

I realize that the Escapist isn't exactly the best place to discuss religion, especially Christianity. But I want you to ignore your own personal religious or anti-religious stances for this thread. Is it possible to make a good game based on the Bible?

I think so. You'd have to stick to the Old Testament, because that's where the most action is. The folly of many Bible 'games' (and I use the term VERY lightly) is that they don't take the subject matter seriously. Take, for example, Moses saving the Jews from slavery. Make that a pulse-pounding stealth/escort game. Don't make it a kiddy platformer!

Anyway, that's my stance. How about you guys?
I've really tried to think of one. I'm a Christian and I've always wanted to make a good Bible game that would encourage people to read or maybe consider the Bible. Subject matter is difficult. I'm having trouble thinking of something.

The old testament has some very good stories that might make some interesting games. And Darksiders: Wrath of War is kinda very loosely based on the Book of Revelation and it seems like it could be a pretty good game. So I say it's possible to make a good Bible game.

Nope, why make a game based on good old Jahova when there are tons of more kick ass gods out there?
