Recently my gaming computer broke down so im forced to use a netbook my mom lent me now what I am wondering is if it is considered stealing if I own the game example Gothic 1 but becouse the netbook lacks a disc drive I cant install and play it like normal so is it bad to get a online copy for a game I legitedly own?

I dont support piracy or theaft and such so this is why I am asking if this kinda question is against rules then sorry in advance.

This gets into one of those gray areas for many people here. Half will say its okay, half will say its still pirating. Its also something that is unclear under the law in many places. You are allowed to maintain a backup copy of any game you legally own and this could be argued as such, some would say its still wrong.

Edit :
Man...did I call it or what. 10 pages of arguing over it with no clear answer. Seems your best option is to flip a coin and go with that.

If you own a copy, I'm pretty sure it's legal to have it on a PC as well.

Others may disagree with me, but I personally don't think so. You've paid money for the product, so the person who created the game or whatever doesn't actually lose out in any way. You own the game, so if you have problems and can only play it by downloading a copy then where's the harm in doing so? I don't see that as piracy. I see it as gaining access to something you have legitimately bought and paid for. It's that simple, in my view.

I would say that it isn't piracy. If it's legal (which it is) to have a digital copy of a music CD on your computer, then I wouldn't see why it isn't to do the same with a game as long as you actually own it.

Of course it's not piracy, you already own the right to make personal copies of the game so have as many as you want. I don't know why this is so difficult for some people to understand ...

I don't believe so, I know a lot of devs would argue with me (since they'd get more money if you broke it and had to buy another) but I think most of the money that is paid for a game is going towards the intellectual property, rather than a mass produced disc or cartridge so IMO if you have bought a game I believe it should be ok.

As I said, I believe most of the money is towards intellectual property, rather than individual parts made to make it, which would almost undoubtedly be more expensive in a car.

its more like "I bought a truck and it broke down so while Im waiting to get it fixed I use this temporary replacement truck"

he bought the game, so if he cant play it on his regular computer I dont see a problem playing it on his netbook instead

That's easy: Not piracy.

YOU paid for it, and YOU are playing the game.

You're just using a perfectly legal backup. Even if you had to download a pirated copy from the internet to get it to work, you're still merely playing the game you paid for.

I say it is still pirating, but given the circumstances, I would allow it. You paid for your copy of the game after all.

i would argue not as i bought assassins creed 2 for PC and couldn't use it as ubisoft's launcher-thing never worked so i downloaded a modded version so i could play offline.

bottom line: you paid, the product didn't work so you got a copy that did, since you already bought it the company doesn't loose money.

it doesn't matter what the money is for its still using an illegal copy

If it was, GOG would not maintain an online 'library' of your purchases so you can re-install games as necessary. QED

that argument only works if he phones the company and gets permission to use the other copy. and returns it after. and the "I'm going to delete it after I get my other computer back" argument doesn't hold water.
