Is it too late to get into TF2?

A new player should have a barrel of fun with it. It's quite easy to get into, I'll admit it has been ruined slightly, but a great game nevertheless, I suggest going to DM Store to learn your killing skills and then to Pipeline, for payload is where TF2 excels.

I have clocked in over 800 hours into it and I still love to play it. Sure the item shop is annoying but at the same time, everything can be randomly dropped. You may find that the regular weapons are actually better. For example, I use all the old scout, demo (unless screwing around), and soldier stuff. Others are just minor swaps but nothing is really game breaking.

The hats or the items are simply a bonus in my opinion. You can get 95% percent of the item with items drops or crafting, which is simply an incentive to play more. Since every item with an effect is balanced, they simply encourage a different playstyle.

You can do just fine with the base weapons. It's actually recommended to get used to the base weapons before moving on to some of the items.

People rage about the hats, but if you don't like a hat, you have the option not to wear it. Most of the hats don't even have an effect anyways, and those that do only work with a specific set of items.

TF2 is brilliant and you don't HAVE to buy anything in the in-game store. You can still get everything if you have patience.
Not to mention the crafting and trading system allows you to get a specific item faster if you have the right item.

And is the hat thing really that bad? Could someone explain please?
The hat thing isn't that bad. Valve fans just don't know how to kill a meme.
Some hats when combined with specific items will give you an effect (bonus health, ammo, etc). I'm pretty sure every bonus also has a drawback though (less fire resistance is one I know of). So it's not like the guys with hats have a huge advantage.

It's mostly just people who can't let go of a meme.

Ya the game is ruined by now, its just another Korean MMO FPS with overpriced items etc it was better before now its just well...lets say if you pay you win

I assume you know about the item shop right?
You do know you can get the items for free? And that the weapons are vaguely balanced? If he joins now he'll have stock weapons which are just fine. I'm not quite sure what the problem is; you don't HAVE to buy the items :S

Edit: Also people who complain about the hats: Why on earth does it matter? It's a cosmetic item, so what if they like them or not? If you don't like them don't wear them +_+

No the game is peerfectly fine you can still play. Yes there are somethings that are annoying like over saturation of items which is becoming a problem in a lot of FPS games nowadays and you can buy everything in the shop BUT everything weapon wise is unlockable. As far as I know only minor things must be bought. It does however have quite a steep learning curve given the time people have had to hone their skills so don't be expecting miracles skill wise when you jump in.

It seems like I'm always late to join the bandwagon these days. But these past few weeks I've been becoming increasingly interested in TF2. But since it's been out for a couple of years already, I thought I'd make sure it's worth it. I'd rather not spend my Christmas money on it now and have a sequel announced in a month, you know? So some advice from a few current players would be greatly appreciated. :) Thank you!
Actually, you picked the best time to pick the game up. The game is a balanced as any online shooter could hope to be and the bevy of extra content (maps, game modes, class-updates, etc) that has been added since day 1 makes the game a literal steal at $20. So, yes. Go for it. I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed.

What the hell are you talking about? "You pay you win." What utter crap. The only non-unlockable items in the game are, at best, variations on what's already there. I've yet to see a single store weapon/item that gives any kind of advantage over the standard or unlocked weapons.

I've gotten back into TF2 recently, after a year's hiatus, and I can honestly say the store doesn't bother me at all. I just don't use it. I think it's a waste of money, but it doesn't matter in the end because nothing in the store is crucial for gameplay. Not to mention much of what's in there is unlockable by the player. So long as said player has more patience than a three year old.

In fact some of the weapons in the store are actually quite useless, gameplay-wise. The only other "big" thing in the store is hats. And, unless someone is obsessed with how their character looks (even though you spend most of the game in first person), then one can just ignore the store. The core gameplay is just as fun and frantic as it ever was. Only, it's been VASTLY improved.

Except, the weaponry is sufficiently balanced and able to be acquired for free via drops.

Away, troll.

It's worth getting. It's not as good as it used to be, but it's still a barrel of non-serious fun.

I have had it since launch, but i cant say i play it very often.
I have been dabbling with it the last few days after not playing it in months, and i dont understand the item shop or the unlockables or any of that crap, and use the original weapon loadout for all the classes and i can still pwn up a server as much as i ever used to be able to.
So no, its not too late. its a brilliantly balanced game, and anyone saying that you need to buy stuff or grind to be good is wrong.

It's still a great game. You lost it's prime, definitely, and it has slowly but steadily gone downhill, but it's still one of the best FPSs around. Just not the absolute paragon of nearly flawless game design it once was. Now it's just "pretty good".

They basically stabbed their art direction straight in the face and told it to go get fucked for some extra cash. Read the original developer commentaries, then look at the game now.

I have TF2 for PC and have yet to play it. Looked at the server list and had no idea what the community was like online. Was kinda afraid to jump into any game in fear of being insta-banned for being new.
all the servers i found on my first go were clan servers, and i haven't played since

I don't even get the issue with the hats - people like to collect them, that's it. It's not the bread and butter of the bloody gameplay.

If you want to criticise TF2, it seems, and you don't know how to, you reference hats.

OT: There's a lot more stuff in it then when I played, but just stick with it. At the end of the day you're still just pointing and shooting, and they're running a beta test at the minute to help balance all the new stuff they've added. So starting now is as good a time as any.
