Yes, Morrowind is 'better'. I think it was better in it's day than Skyrim is now, but Skyrim beats the pants off of it in this day and age. Download mods to your hearts content though, and you basically bring the game back to life.

Well, personally I like Morrowind better, and I'm not even playing it modded. (Mostly becaus I'm too lazy to mod it properly.)


For me, it's three main reasons:

For one you can't become the leader of a faction without being good in that factions skills. For instance, if you are a hackandslash warrior, you can easily rise high in the Temple and the Fighters Guild. But not in the Thieves or Mages Guild, because you have to be able to cast spells, mix potions and sneak your way to eternity.

Two: There's no fast-travel. Sure, you have to walk and walk, and then walk some more. But, in my opinion, it adds alot to the whole atphmosphere and feel of a huge world. In both Oblivion and Skyrim it too easy to just be lazy and skip ahead to your destination.

And one last tiny one: If you roll a Kahjiit you actually get kitty-feet. So, you can't wear shoes. Same goes for Argonian.

When I'm typing this out, I see that these things are also very limiting (I'm guessing with some good mods, you can change all these things). But for me, these are key elements in a great, big and varying world. It makes Morrowind more "realistic" than Skyrim.

I know it's been said 100 times already, but your really can't directly compare the two despite Morrwind being Skyrim's ancestral grandfather.

Morrowind is a great game of its own right and requires a lot of the player, not as a fault, but as a feature. Yes, the combat starts out clunky, but that's what lower levels are for, so you can FEEL and APPRECIATE your progression; no one seems to mention that as you level up, the combat is GREATLY improved and rewarding.

Not to mention Morrowind's world rewards exploration. I don't know whoever thought this leveling enemies and loot to match the player was a good idea!! All I know is, as a level 7 in Morrowind, if I veered off the beaten path and discovered a long-forgotten tomb, battled my way to its depths, I might find loot worthy of a level 40! Oblivion and Skyrim? Pssh, never mind you've got some sort of precognitive medieval GPS that allows you to "sense" undiscovered shit from 200 yards away, that same long-forgotten tomb MIGHT yield you the missing piece of the armor set you're currently wearing and are already devising a plan to sell when your levels allows the NEXT better armor to become the fashion trend throughout the land!

Is Skyrim good? Yes.

Is Morrowind good? Yes.

Is Skyrim better than Morrowind? I wouldn't play them for the same reasons to make a direct comparison. Is Tiger Woods '12 better than Modern Warefare 3?

LoL! You described my archetypal character to the T, except my sign was always "The Lady," can't remember what benefits it bestowed, but I know it never failed.

Also, can't rememebr where exactly, but theres a cave under water near the shore around Vivic, the worst enemy you encounter inside a Giant Rat, but the's a little nook in which is hidden a Glass Longsword! It was always my first stop as a newly released, level 1 prisoner; I might not hit them ever time at the start, but when I did, it hurt 'em!

In my opinion morrowind is better.
Obviously, Skyrim does a lot better in some areas, but for my checklist, Morrowind outweighs Skyrim by quite a bit. I think that the next TES game will hopefully overtake my love of Morrowind, as it will probably be in a place thats actually different and visually interesting. Unless they decide to make Black Marsh just a generic swamp and port over point lookout and stick lizard men in it. That or they actually let Arkane do pretty much all the combat to make it decent rather than just getting half-way there.

That and I want to actually just feel LUCKY sometimes that I just happened to walk into a dungeon and find say, the best helmet in the game when I only had to fight low level skeletons rather than just every dungeon have leveled crap. I don't mind leveled enemies too much but when there is no chance I can't just find something completely awesome by luck, it removes a hell of a lot away from the game, at least to me.

So, it seems like everybody is saying that it is good if you can get over the things that it doesn't have from Skyrim. I would get it but I need to know if it takes up a lot of memory on my computer, because I have problems with memory on Minecraft, but that might be something completely different.
Also, you guys are saying that the combat is worse than Skyrim, does it get better or why is it worse? my favorite things in Skyrim were the customization, the combat, and the huge world to explore.

^THIS!!! I pass by nearly all locations that a quest doesn't specifically send me to for fear of my curiosity netting me a brand new set of Iron Armor *lights a sparkler, blows a kazoo* because I'm a whopping level 6 who accidentally discovered the resting place of Alduin himself. Level sucks. it was Oblivions BIGGEST flaw, IMHO, and I hoped Skyrim would fix that, but no... so I keep Morrowind close by for a truly EPIC feeling of adventure.

The skills system is "bad" because everything functions as a bit of a flip of the coin. Imagine your level in a skill being your chance out of 100 that you'll succeed in your attempt to do something. So in combat, at lower levels that tranlsates to to a lot of 'misses' which turns a lot of people off. BUT, just as the skills upgrade in Skryim, with use and quickly at the lower levels, a diligent player can quickly increase their chances making combat a lot better.

If you likde customization, let me know if this whets your appetite: in Morrowind, there are Light, MEDIUM and Heavy armors, each with their own unique armor sets and benefits and risks. A full set of any armor consists of a helmet, body armor, a left AND right pauldron (shoulder armor,) a left AND right gauntlet, grieves (thigh armor) and boots. Good luck filling out a complete set of ANYTHING significant easily! Each piece can be independantly enchanted based on your enchancting skill. Short Blades as a class of weapon fall between Swords and Daggers, Axes have their own skill. A skilled mage can fly, yes, FLY anywhere on the huge map. And there's SO much more...

Morrowind has amazing depth; even if it can't really match Skyrim on the technical side, it pretty much dominates from the RPG side, even almost 10 years later.

VERY good character build. though I'd pick the "the Thief" or "the Steed" over "the Tower."

GTFO? Seriously? Can it be attained at level one? That was always my thign with the Glass Sword hint, I could get it without breaking a sweat, but I'd go for a Daedric ANYTHING at an early level just to say I DID it! *Copy/Paste your post into Word to make note in my ragged Morrowind guide!*

My FAVORITE thing to do, though, and is always my ultimae goal when I play, is collect a full set of Daedric Armor and enchant each piece with Chameleon (a spell I've yet to see in Skyrim... hmm...) I forget the specific breakdown, but I know Daedric is the only armor that can hold that amount of enchantment, but I ultimately get it up to 101% Chameleon, COMPLETELY invisible despite your actions! It's a huge exploit, I know, but I always do it legitimately: collect the Grand Soul Gems, collect the armor piece, raise my enchant skill, etc.

I played Morrowind for a short time. Morrowind has a lot more content. Like I think there are like over 20 groups or guilds you can join. But the bad graphics turned me away. I was also spoiled by Oblivions giant red arrow telling me where to go. Also all conversations happen in text form. No voice actors. Once again spoiled by Oblivion. Also Morrowind has alot of cool weapons Oblivion got rid of such as spears, halberds, crossbows, and medium armor.

Some reasons why I LOVE Morrowind more.

1. You can wear pants and a shirt under your armor. And your armor is split into chest, shoulders, legs, feet and hands. Which provides more enchanting possibilities.
2. Significantly more guilds than Skyrim or Oblivion
3. More robust Spellmaking and Alchemy. You can do Godly things with the right combnation of spells and potions.
4. Amazing Secrets like the Goldbrand Sword mission. OH and the Goldbrand sword is amazing.
5. Better Environment. Some say there is no fast travel but there are Slit Striders witch take you between major areas. I personally love the wandering because wandering in Morrowind means possibly finding an entire guild
6. Levitation, Chameleon 100%, Mark and Recall spells.
7. It's harder until you figure the game's system out. Then it's Crazy adventure time.
8. A MUCH MORE INTERESTING WORLD. A CITY IN A GIANT CRAB SHELL? YES PLEASE!

If you don't figure out a good character build you won't have as much fun. Yes you do walk slow but not for long. Especially if you picked "The Steed" as your birthsign you'll start the game far faster.

The Tower is fantastic for raiding the storehouse at the beginning in Seyda Neen. But I prefer the +10(5?) to Luck you get from The Thief. Luck crushes in Morrowind.

Morrowind is a genuinely hardcore RPG. Skyrim is a waypoint following simulation in comparison, Oldschool gamers will know what i mean.

That reminds me of the Shrine of Daring. Not sure if you can do it more than once, but that Levitate blessing is so useful - especially for the Ghostgate shrine quest.

Well, apart for the Cliff Racers that live at that level. SO MANY CLIFF RACERS...
There was nothing quite as fun as getting a bunch of cliff racers on your tail and then luring them into a town though. But ugh... CLIFF RACERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS WHY MUST YOU FLY ON MY HEAD?!?

Morrowind was better at the time it came out than Skyrim is now.

I'd say that the sheer difference in technical level, as well as advances in overall design make Skyrim better in a simple direct comparison. Games have evolved and once we put aside our rose-colored glasses for a minute we can see that a lot of that evolving was for the better.

However, for its time, Morrowind was a better game than Skyrim is today. I don't miss many of Morrowind's features, like the quest Journal (which was utterly useless and I had to keep one of my own handwritten on a notepad) and such, but it was an awesome game back then.

I'll admit to not having played a lot of either of the two games, but I got considerably less frustrated at the exploration of Skyrim then I did Morrowind.

I tried looking past the graphics in Morrowind and somewhat enjoying the atmosphere and the setting, but then getting frustrated because walking drains your stamina. Again, I don't know about the later game, but from my experience, I had to stop every 10 minutes and wait for my stamina to come back, also there seemed to be less random encounters, so I boredly marched from town to town getting quests and stopping to await the return of my Stamina.

In Skyrim I just didn't know what the hell I was doing. I escaped the dragon and then the man who was escorting me just said "We should part ways here" and ditched me in the woods. Yes, that's as far as I got, it made me angry.

So I guess I'd say that Skyrim has better gameplay but Morrowind has a much better sense of direction...... I recommend Oblivion.

Is that really as far as you got? You have two options: go off on your own or follow him anyways. If you follow him, he will comment on that fact and give you some more direction once the both of you get into town.

That decision was put in place so that when you start over with a new character and know what you have to do, you don't have to keep following the scripted events and just do your thing. I felt that was kind of obvious. You are missing out if that's as far as you got. There's plenty of direction for the main story once you get to town.
