Exactly my thoughts.

If it's original and thoughtful it's art.

Rap is a genre of music, and thus art.

The problem with it is that 98% of what is commonly considered "rap" is not music. It's someone talking with a beat going in the background.

When the lyrics mesh with the beat, and the combination serves to heighten the experience, then yes, it's art, and sometimes damn good art.

Unfortunately, I've yet to hear any rap that qualifies for that.

This. I haven't found a decent rock song on the radio in years, so I would hardly expect anyone to find good rap songs on the radio.
Though truthfully, a lot of the good stuff is old today. Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco are alright rappers, but both do make a bunch of garbage songs with a few gems in between (why the hell am I always hearing "Stronger"? That isn't even close to the best song in that album.)
That being said, I am a huge Black Star fan even though they only released one album together and that was about ten years ago.

Yes. Problem is rap has too many wannabes who only rely on stereotype and catch phrases instead of actually making good stuff.

Get Rich Without Trying. That's rap. But that's also every media fad that people capitalize on. I do see a light at the end of the tunnel if rap decides to have more 'rap ARTISTS' in the mix.

And you don't stop.

All music is art, it's just most Rap is bad art.
And when you say most Rap, you mean...
Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, all the popular rappers with no sense of talent or excellence. The only decent popular rapper is (Maybe) Eminem. I've never listened to enough rap to make an informed opinion, though my formula is...

Popular Rap=Crap.
Fair comment. I'm one of those people who honestly believe that there are more talented artists out there than there are mainstream entertainers.

Because what you see are the Lil Wayne's, the Soulja Boy's, the 50 cent's, most people assume that's what Rap has to offer, when they only count for one or two out of the 41 sub genres of hip hop music.

I also think that there are a few better rappers out there in the mainstream than Eminem. He started off really good, but the talent has been wasted somewhat with the 'ass like that' songs among others. But either way, a great deal of mainstream rap is bad art, yes, I'll have to agree.

I agree with everything you said except for Lupe Fiasco. I personally don't think I have heard a bad song from him so far on either of his albums (except maybe 'the coolest')and I think he's also a lot better than Kanye West. I like the fact that his content is somewhat eccentric.

I also think that the problem with telling people about rock in the exact same respect they are talking about hip hop is they have grown with rock. They subconsciously ignore the crap the way we do, but then turn around and say '99% of rap sucks' when we know that's bullshit, technically we could say the exact same thing.

And it doesn't help their case when the best examples people can come up with are either bands from 40 years ago or one or System of a Down/Disturbed.

Wait what the f-

How is it NOT art? Its music, music is art. Rap is also kinda heavy on the lyric part, thus it music with concentration on poetry.
Personally, I hold graffiti as a higher art form than I do rap. Graffiti at least you can end up with something pleasant to see. But I digress.

I do not consider rap an art form because it's literally trying to be a modern-day Shakespere with redundant bass lines. However, unlike the eternal bard, there's no thought process, it's all "give me whatever I want now."

I've always thought that art means to elicit strong emotional responses in people. And seeing how many people who have posted in this thread have a vitriol hatred of rap, I can't say that rap is not art.

I think you're judging an entire genre on a few radio hits. And since when have those come to define a genre?

I give you Stan by Eminem.

Dear Slim, I wrote but you still ain't callin
I left my cell, my pager, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em
There probably was a problem at the post office or somethin
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
but anyways; f**k it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her?
I'ma name her Bonnie
I read about your Uncle Ronnie too I'm sorry
I had a friend kill himself over some bit*h who didn't want him
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your biggest fan
I even got the underground sh*t that you did with Skam
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the sh*t you did with Rawkus too, that sh*t was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan
This is Stan

{Chorus: Dido}

[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Slim, you still ain't called or wrote, I hope you have a chance
I ain't mad - I just think it's F**KED UP you don't answer fans
If you didn't wanna talk to me outside your concert
you didn't have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew
That's my little brother man, he's only six years old
We waited in the blistering cold for you,
four hours and you just said, "No."
That's pretty shitty man - you're like his f**kin idol
He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do
I ain't that mad though, I just don't like bein lied to
Remember when we met in Denver - you said if I'd write you
you would write back - see I'm just like you in a way
I never knew my father neither;
he used to always cheat on my mom and beat her
I can relate to what you're saying in your songs
so when I have a shitty day, I drift away and put 'em on
cause I don't really got sh*t else so that sh*t helps when I'm depressed
I even got a tattoo of your name across the chest
Sometimes I even cut myself to see how much it bleeds
It's like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me
See everything you say is real, and I respect you cause you tell it
My girlfriend's jealous cause I talk about you 24/7
But she don't know you like I know you Slim, no one does
She don't know what it was like for people like us growin up
You gotta call me man, I'll be the biggest fan you'll ever lose
Sincerely yours, Stan -- P.S.
We should be together too

{Chorus: Dido}

[Eminem as 'Stan']
Dear Mister-I'm-Too-Good-To-Call-Or-Write-My-Fans,
this'll be the last package I ever send your ass
It's been six months and still no word - I don't deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters;
I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect
So this is my cassette I'm sending you, I hope you hear it
I'm in the car right now, I'm doing 90 on the freeway
Hey Slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive?
You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night"
about that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning
but didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
That's kinda how this is, you coulda rescued me from drowning
Now it's too late - I'm on a 1000 downers now, I'm drowsy
and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped +ALL+ of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you SCREAM about it
I hope your conscience EATS AT YOU and you can't BREATHE without me
See Slim; {*screaming*} Shut up bit*h! I'm tryin to talk!
Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screamin in the trunk
but I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you
cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too
Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now
Oh shit, I forgot, how'm I supposed to send this sh*t out?
{*car tires squeal*} {*CRASH*}
.. {*brief silence*} .. {*LOUD splash*}

{Chorus: Dido}

[Eminem]
Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
and here's an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the Starter cap
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I musta missed you
Don't think I did that sh*t intentionally just to diss you
But what's this sh*t you said about you like to cut your wrists too?
I say that sh*t just clownin dogg,
c'mon - how f**ked up is you?
You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling
to help your as* from bouncing off the walls when you get down some
And what's this sh*t about us meant to be together?
That type of shit'll make me not want us to meet each other
I really think you and your girlfriend need each other
or maybe you just need to treat her better
I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time
before you hurt yourself, I think that you'll be doin just fine
if you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Stan
why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a fan
I just don't want you to do some crazy shit
I seen this one sh*t on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick
Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge
and had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid
and in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to
Come to think about, his name was.. it was you
Damn!

Arguably poetry, I still don't think it's there yet.

What are you calling rap?

Is Run DMC rap? Hip-hop, I'd say.
Is Tupac rap? I'd say so, honestly.
Is Grandmaster Flash rap or Hip-hop? I'd say hip-hop.

It really depends what you call what. Generally, the music I would call art tends to be Hip-hop.

A lot of rap is 'bad' as it's mentioned.

As hip-hop progressed to that shit I don't like...then, well, yeah. I just listen to old stuff now.

If its a form of expression and it appeals to some intrinsic nature or emotion then by definition its art even if you don?t like it you should accept it as thus.

Speaking as a popular music student and a particular fan of rap (although a player of jazz, funk, rock, metal and fusion) it is indeed art.

It is the musical form of a vast cultural phenomenon, that of hip-hop. When "rap" and "art" are mentioned, Run-DMC spring to mind; they achieved things musically and socially off the charts.

Gangster Rap is art, but perhaps less valid; it is social exploitation. They are playing to a mass demographic, playing on stereotypes. There is no apparent intent to further music as an art form in itself, but you have to remember that music for music's sake is recent in terms of the grand scheme of things; music began as and will always primarily be a social activity, and in terms of a social activity, even the degrading, basic gangster rap fulfils its function.

...But jazz is better ;)

EDIT: after reading some of the terminology used in this thread:

"hip-hop" was originally the name of the subculture arising in The Bronx involving b-boy and MCing. Later it came into use for the musical side of things.

"rapping" was originally a verb, the vocal style used by the MCs who rapped over the DJ mixes. Society adopted it also as a name for the musical side of things, so the two are fairly interchangeable, but I see it as more fundamentally true to the nature of hip-hop to deem things which are close to the center of the subculture (authentic rap, and other less exploitative activities like breakdancing) as hip-hop, and rap as more of a musical offspring, for example, gangster rap came out of hip-hop culture.
