I think that it absolutely can (and I repeat, can) be artistic. 95% of the stuff pumped out today is crap, but every once in a while, I hear a rap song and think "Wow! This is poetry set to a beat...."

For example, this guy raps, but it's still definitely art:

Wait what the f-

How is it NOT art? Its music, music is art. Rap is also kinda heavy on the lyric part, thus it music with concentration on poetry.

I'm essentially begging you to distinguish between the stuff being called Grap now and the classics. Ice-T, Dre, Biggie and other people who really rapped about something that mattered.

Good job being more stereotype, as many others have pointed out, there are rap songs out there which are quite good, some even pretty damn awesome (and this comes from a punk). And besides, even the crap like Souija Boy or 50cent uses more than the word "fuck". Even mainstream rap is art in some way, ALL music is, it's just that the majority of it is very crappy art.

Music is art. Poetry is art. Mix them together, you expect to get something great but, instead you get this bullshit! Rap is not art. I will never look at rap as art, no matter what happens.

rap can be art, but most rappers just like to say how much they like shooting, or tits'n'hoes. that's not art. some of it is, the verbal poetry type. when they have good lyrics, either funny or meaningful. eminem has some good lyrics - he is an "artist" as it where. 50 cent, not so much.
also just because a lot of rap artists use swear words, doesn't instantly make it not art. certain "artists" shit on canvases and sell it, and that is consiedered art by some.
also art is a very subjective word, so what is art to one person, isn't to another, so there is almost no discussion here, it's just people giving there own opinions. id be very surprised if anyone came away from this with changed opinions.

however dan le sac v scroobius pip = awesomeness. seriously i love them, and they are great live too.

Then you are ignorant. There is no universal law of what is or what is not art, even though some mediums (like painting and music) is easier to get into art.

To me rap could've been art, then somebody decided they would add a whole shitload of foul language, racial slurs and street slang, ruining the entire idea. Then distributed to 12 year olds and ruined the generation too.

The purpose of art is to hold up a mirror to reality. Eminem does that except the mirror is one of those novelty ones from the circus where everyone looks fat. I love it.

Mainstream rap isnt art. Just a bunch of "gangsters" either trying to get sympathy for their parents not using a condom or feeding their ego with their stupidity.

I say that some rap is art. If it talks about a complicated relaionship, or love, then yea, sure. When it's about shooting people or picking up 'hos', then no.

I don't really like the term "art". Everything seems to get labled as art, so I just say that music is... Well... Music. And rap is music. Not my favorite type of music, but still music.

What's the difference between writing poetry about love and poetry about shooting people? Im not saying all rap is art, I'm just saying nothing about rap PREVENTS it from being art. Most people just hear commercial rap anyway, and commercial music in general is dick cheese

Like any old art thread I've responded to:

Art:The expression or application of the human creative skills and imagination.

Since some rappers uses their creative skills and imagination, they're artist.

The orginal rappers were. Some of those who took ideas off of them were too. Some however, are not.
