Sniping is handy for people like me who are terrible at FPS games and then at parties get stuck playing them. Less movement= less fumbling with controllers I know nothing about.

In fact I've always hated the idea of sniping. I hated them ever since CoD 4.

Heck even since Enemy in the Gates.
The film Enemy at the Gates? Really? That's quite high on my list of films to see
Yes, Enemy at the Gates. I loved that movie too, but the portrayal of sniping is what bothers me. Why sniping?

Sniping is over abundant. There is no such thing as a military engagement were a team of 6 snipers operating without spotters takes on the exact same thing.

I play a lot of TF2, but sniper is by far my least played class, mostly because I'm absolutely terrible with it. Sure I can bounce people into the air as a soldier and juggle them with rockets, but clicking peoples foreheads is just not my forte. Plus there are almost always at least 3 snipers on every team on TF2. I'm not saying they have become over abundant now though, its been like that since I started playing.

snipers are abundant, but for every game with them there is a gun that counters them, usually anything automatic. Most people use snipers because they are fun to use.

More snipers? Yes.
Same elitist attitude from CoD1? Definitely. (Although the snipers of the now will never compare in smug to the non-scopers of every CoD WW2 game)
Especially CoD 1. That's quickscoping. Not the aim and perk assisted wannabes of MW2. CoD1 is in every way better than anything CoD recently.

I see tons of these intervention sleight of hand using morons. I see more Marathon lightweight silenced UMP45 users though. Those are the annoying ones.

Yes, using the least effective and most skilled tactic in the game really tips the balance.

Right.

And no, 7 in 10 people use Marathon Lightweight Commando or the noob tube.

Yeahhhhh, snipers as in, jumping around and quickscoping like a ************.

Those people aren't snipers, they are retards.
Why exactly are they retards? Camp sniping takes a HELL of a lot less skill than quick scopes and "run and gun" sniping. I find camp sniping incredibly boring too, but then again, I have testicles, so camping is pretty much cheating in my book.
Well enjoy having your testicles, but jumping around being a douchebag with your sniper rifle does, in fact, sound retarded to me when you realize that actually using the sniper rifle the way it was intended is a lot easier. That's why they are retards.

In MW2, the Intervention and Barrett are the best weapons as they can one-hit-kill at any range (with Stopping Power) and their scopes are quick enough to bring up to beat any other weapon, except for shotguns and noobtube in some situations.

That is not a ***** rant, that is actually fact.

GOd damn, why is everyone complaining about snipers so much? I gotta say, my patiance regarding the topic is pretty much GONE.

If you're pissed off because you stuck your neck out and someone put an axe to it, it's your own damn fault. Next time, mind your cover. End of fucking story.
They are pissed about the people who use quick scope and complain about the more classics sniping which is a valid thing to ***** about. The Proliferation of snipers is on the border of my patience though.

Well, the Sniper is my least played class on TF2, and I will admit that I don't really have the patience or the aiming skill to be particularly good, but I find that within the game, snipers are quite balanced, with quickscoping being much less effective.

Im a huge fan of Sniping not because its "easy" or im crap at playing whatever shooter it is im playing, but for some reason im just a fan of Sniping, in RL Snipers are the creme de la creme of the Infantry. The years of training you need to hit a static target from a mile away is insane.

What does annoy me is when gamers portray Snipers as "cowards" and "noobs". This is largely due to the game being played. Modern Warfare 2 is the classic case for Sniping being used badly in a game. BF:BC 2 however is a great Example. 2 shots are needed to kill a target if they are not hit in the head, bullets are affected by gravity, this makes for a more fun imo experience. I like to find my spot get a friend to pop a ammo box down for me and start hunting. What i do hate however is things like "Killcam", Imo this is nothing but a game mechanic for introduced by the developer to help the little whiny kids who cant take getting killed from across the map, Snipers are supposed to STAY hidden, whats the point in putting them in clear view to anyone who was killed by them.

Even BF:BC2 has it to a certain extent. :(

A funny point as im typing all this my favorite and most used class in BF:BC 2 is the Engineer, something about destroying Tanks is deeply deeply satisfying, oh and taking a Helicopter out with a Hand operated Rocket Launcher is brilliant.

Oh Rant on Again... Anyone who complains about people Camping, grow up, camping is part and will always be part of war. In World War 1 we had the trenches, World War 2 on D-Day the Allies did not complain to Churchill etc when they seen that the Germans were in Bunkers on Normandy on Mounted Machine Guns did they?

Grow a Set!

Sniping is only done well in games where it is balanced, for example Arma 2.

I was near Electrovadosk and the mission was to kill the local militia leader, me and my spotter decided to take it up and avoid a large amount of death and ***** fits if we tried a full frontal assault. We took an MH-60's Knighthawk helicopter and landed 2000 metres outside of the city in the nearby mountains; while we did this ground forces edged in on the city to distract the patrols and armoured vehicles.

My spotter had a rangefinder, kestrel wind monitor and a spotting scope, I had a MacMillan TAC-50 heavy sniper rifle with tracer rounds to better judge distance and wind. We stealthily moved through the Eastern European forest avoiding enemy BMP-2's and BRDM-2's eventually we were 1200m away from the mark. My friend quickly spotted the leather jacket-wearing commander and guided me to him. The mark was near a train station and with the wind speed, direction and target distance measured I made sure my bipod was deployed and took the shot. The first bullet went left by around 3 metres, the target went prone and scanned the horizon, commanding his squad to do the same. I compensated for the wind and took the second shot, this time it hit the guy square in the chest and completed the mission.

That is sniping

On Arma 2 having a sniper rifle is a duty, you carry a heavy weapon which is grossly ineffective at most normal engagement ranges, every shot you take is carefully judged and the enemy shouldn't see you or know what hit him. You need patience and you probably wont see much action, you can't sprint because you get knackered after a few hundred metres of lugging around a heavy sniper but you can disable anything up to IFV's and APC's with one. You have to scan the terrain and be able to judge good, but not obvious, sniping locations. You have to judge distance, bullet drop, travel time, wind and target motion. It requires skill beyond any skill in any other game.

A few days later I play a bit of Modern Warfare 2 and get to listen to some kid start bigging himself up as a good sniper, he runs around in the open, jumping around like he's on crack and trying to quickscope with no need to judge distance or wind, running around firing a Barret M107 from the hip (lol) carrying it like it's made of foam. I'd pay so much to be able to bring my old Macmillan TAC-50 into that game.

I personally don't think so, true some matches I have been in seems like it is sniper city, but I usually see different classes across the board
