Obviously, not the entire movie, it has the common myth of boy becoming knight, getting magic sword and defeating the evil empire.

The very first scene with scrolling words is a maybe.

Second scene with Destroyer chasing the ship is awesome.

Then the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader.

I always thought their helmets were slightly too big and Vader is wearing a cape!
Coupled with the ridculous helmets the rebels are wearing and bad aim all around.

Yes, we all did laugh at Yoda at first, but now look at him. He's probably the most known, and awesomest thing on the planet! I'm pretty sure if I get my way, my first kid is going to be named Yoda.

I think the original trilogy was fantastic, but the prequels SUCKED.
George Lucas should be banned from trying to kill his franchise/legacy.

Yea, but it's the cool kind of silly. The kind that, when you spice it up enough, becomes badass.

Medichlorians. Need I say more?

Anyway, the original trilogy is pretty damn good, not a masterpiece, but very good. It was silly, as any story of this archetype is...

To a degree, yeah, it's silly. It was, to a degree, originally just a movie with spoofs off fantasy, history, and myth. Hell, the Empire had several things that were blatently ripped off Nazi iconography (The storm troopers and certain helmet designs come to mind). The scolling intro text was taken right out of the old Buck Rodgers films. The story was pulp fantasy and the setting was pulp scifi.

But that doesn't mean there's nothing to it. Lucus created an entire world based off our own, essentially characturing everything to a significant degree. Yeah, it went into dark territory in the prequel trilogy (which I liked the Palpatine's rise from nobody to galatic emperor in true American iconography), but all the serious elements balence out the silly elements to form a wonderful universe to explore in side story.

What I don't get is why your asking a group of people what your oppinion should be, kinda stupid.

OT: To some yes, to others no, because it's an oppinion wether it's silly or not.

I didn't think the prequels were horrible, but I think they lost something because when Star Wars first came out it was a pretty big technical accomplishment and that they didn't have Harrison Ford in them. They are pretty silly movies, but they are still worth watching.

I feel exactly the same, everything you say is fact to/for me.

I started watching 4,5,6 over and over again and I loved 1,2,3 in theatres later.

The prequels were as good or better than the originals. Compare the obi-wans...which is better? and the thing i dont get is why the older story has newer looking stuff...apocalypse or something? or is that what the empire was doing-hunting down new technology and going retro!

Remember the scene where Old Ben scares away the raiders by whooping and waving?

Maybe movies were better before all the gritty realism set in. Case in point, the super filtered Clash of the Titans. Sam Worthington is the next Shia

There will never be a movie better than the original three Star Wars movies. Ever. They are absolute masterpieces and represent the absolute best that film can be (with the obvious exclusion of the best special effects possible, but considering they were so advanced for the time I still stand by my statement). Silly? Not at all. Maybe a bit cliche in some ways, but the cliche elements are only cliche because Star Wars did them. Anyone who would actually laugh just because the helmets are kind of big in that scene is one of those people who laughs during Schindler's List and the Passion of the Christ: the people who make a joke of everything and are incapable of taking film seriously.

It may be silly, but it's not ridiculous. Compared to Warhammer 40k, Star Wars is the epitome of realism - everything's relative.

Every word from the Emperor in the final movie was pure gold in the Creepy Uncle Awards.

"You want this... don't you..."

They need those helmets. When the stormtroopers enter into the room, watch the trooper furthest on the right...

Yes, it was in the finished film (go check it now if you have it), and yes Star Wars is horribly silly, and so are the people who worship Bobba Fett. The guy was killed by a blind man with a stick.

No. Star Wars is not silly, not really. It has degenerated a little with the prequels, but I refuse to think it's silly because of the time they were out.
