Is there such a thing as "America's national dish"?

I don't know. There are many national "dishes" here. dried fish, sheep face, lamb liver tucked into the lamb stomach and blood. The actual meat of the Icelandic lamb is considered very good, too.

Britain doesn't really have a national dish either - it differs drastically between region and socioeconomic status ;)

"As American as apple pie."

Thats what people say, so I guess apple pie would be my answer.

How could it not be hamburger?
A burger is a commodity. I don't think anyone really regards it as "cuisine". And yes, there IS a big difference!
A burger is a cuisine. Just not when it's made from a fast food restaurant. You can go out to any restaurant that makes burgers as one of their main dishes (there is quite a bit of them) and hey take pride in them. Burgers are some of the best easily made food out there, most people just take them for granted.

Hhhhmmmm... for England i would have to say probably something meaty like sausages or beef or maybe just the genral roast dinner with all the trimmings (roasted meat of some form, roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, carrots, parsnips, broccoli and green beans)

Pizza or some kinda chicken.
Pizza is Italian so that would be impossible for it to be the American national dish.

OT: Probably Corn/Chilli dogs???
Pizza was invented by an Italian immigrant in America. So it could qualify.

I'd probably say real Bar B Que .Although a lot of cultures have sweet sauce dishes, I think American Bar B Que is great. It does vary region to region though, but that's mostly in the sauce (Some regions have molasses based, other vinegar etc etc)

Apple Pie. Maybe Potato Salad.

Like you said, America is so huge that food varies a ton between region. I went up to New England recently, and they have beans for breakfast! We also went to a restruant claiming their specialty was Key Lime Pie and Mojitos, and my family, being from coastal Florida, laughed at them. Other than that fluke I'd be hard pressed to find good Spanish, Cuban, and Tropical seafood (yes, it is different than new England seafood) up north, but I'm okay with that.

I think each region should just have their own mascot food.

McDonalds really is the only proper answer to this. You might be able to work out certain state-specific dishes that stand out, but nation wide?

Instead of "In God We Trust", US money should say "Would you like fries with that?".

Remember that America hasn't been around for very long; we've had an extremely diverse selection of crops and loads of cash crops. Most of our cuisine is foreign, and most of our normal food doesn't take much experience to make.

It depends, if it has the crumbly stuff on top technically it's called Dutch apple pie so I think we got beat to that one.

My opinion is a burger with BBQ sauce, so delicious, but not made in mcdonald's or a fast food place, it has to be a decent burger (Carl's Jr., where available, is excluded).

But then again, we are a country made up of entirely immigrants so almost all of our cuisine comes from elsewhere in the world.
