He's already punking you if you're so unsure about it. I'd say it's safe to say they're female until you have undeniable suspicion; as in them slipping up and sounding more masculine for some odd reason.
Bearing in mind that one can never be 100% sure until proven otherwise, I treat everyone online as genderless, and that's not much different from how I talk to people IRL, regardless of gender.
If the fact is that you see a prospect for furthering your friendship with this person based on them being female, and you're wondering these things, then I'd have to say you're up a creek.
