Is WOW being copied?

I've just noticed that a lot of things seem to be similar to WOW these days, for example the Navi in Avatar look like trolls (tall blue primitive people who have been forced from their homes) or in borderlands. A class called a hunter who also has pet and the games familiar colour coded loot system.

Have any other of my fellow escapists noticed this or am I jumping at shadows.

Look at some of the gear models from Torchlight compared so some of the wow arena gear from early BC. Same exact weapons scaled down. It really isn't that big a deal though. Good systems get copied and as long as the end result is also good then I don't take issue with it.

Jumping at shadows, you're finding similarities that are too general/already overdone to be plagiarized.

alot of games "borrow" from WOW.since it is exstreamly succesful people want to show good stuff about it in other games or media. Also in Avatar i thought they were furry not scaly. And Diablo had the same sort of system. So wow was taking from earlyer games too

Considering Diablo seems to have color coded the way loot works, I'd say the universal use can be forgiven.

I just wish junk items in Titan Quest weren't gray.

Blizzard should feel flattered, and the the things the games have similar to WOW's were inspired by WOW.

I honestly can't tell if this thread is asking a serious question or not.

Honestly, what is with this forum and overthinking just about everything?

The term 'hunter' has been used far before WoW. Far. Way far.

Really?
No, WoW isn't being copied in any media other than MMOs.
Not quite true. There was this foreign commercial for mouth wash or some such that included CGI with striking resemblances to the opening cinematic to the Lich King.

OT: This was just silly. While WoW-like elements are seen in many things (Like said earlier, almost every MMO since WoW) Avatar and Borderlands are hardly similar enough to be included.

Go watch the Zero Punctuation about web comics. Apply that school of thought to MMO's. Same basic result. To answer the question in a more straightforward way, yes, everyone in the MMO business would cream themselves to have even 10% of WoW monolithic market share. That being said you could also say that WoW is copying JRR Tolkien. And that he is copying mythology. Don't read to much into it.

No shit.

*ahem*

My apologies.

Anyway, games like WoW have managed to ruin the MMORPG industry. And, by ruin, I mean that any other MMO that is not similar to them, will almost definitely not succeed.

Think about it.....the abbreviation "M.M.O.R.P.G." stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. This title has endless possibilities, and could literally mean anything, yet, when you picture an MMO, games like World of Warcraft immediately come to mind.

They have changed the outlook of MMORPGs, thus generalizing the entire genre as fantasy games that include leveling skills, turn-based combat, crafting, multiple races and classes, and ludicrous amounts of questing.

Albeit, these are very good games, but Blizzard has just monopolized the MMO business to such an extent, that they've made it near impossible for other game developers to not follow their lead.

well...WOW kinda covers all the bases and I guess in a way it is copied. But lets be honest you can't make a MMORPG without at least doing something like WOW.

Did you just say...the Na'vi..in Avatar...look like WoW trolls?
DUDE. Really?! You are saying they are exactly alike JUST because they are both blue? (Avatars are much bigger then trolls, I am almost certain.) If we're going by this logic, that must mean Mass effect 2 copied Gears of war, since they both involve GUNS.

See what I did there?
And besides, everything has already been done movie/video-game wise, it's all about how you present it.

The question you should really be asking is:

Is Warhammer being copied?

You know... what with the origin of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.
