Xbox Live is a Microsoft service, so no, it will NEVER be free.
Lol, I agree but not for that reason. I mean, if they can make Silver with the option of TCP/IP games, that could be free, but right now the thing that keeps Xbox at the top is that the sub fee made up for the losses with selling the console itself, and helped increase investment in new technologies, which mean a better Xbox after this one (720 or Pulse I heard).

But you can't blame them: with services like Windows Live, Hotmail, etc. which are essentially free even to those that don't have Microsoft OS/Products and cost MILLIONS to maintain, they have to make a profit somehow. Although that might not be the official division, I think they do pool some resources.
This is a true and well thoguht out arguement, and i'm going to respond with yes, you are correct, but my original point was that because it is Microsoft, a giant in the bussiness, it will not simply make things free and available to people, becasue why would they? they are where they are now because of that reason.
I understand that they need it because the revenues will go toward making better games, but i'm pretty anti-large corperation, seeing as i live in the U.S at this time, and it's the big bussiness that have made us go into a downward spiral since then. Still, i like your agruement, my concluding thoughts - Well Put.

While it is highly unlikely, I think XBL could be free in a not too distant future, all that is required is that the competition increase.

yep, it was a big piece of S***y information. That's never going to happen and if it does I'll remove 3 of my own vertabre, cut out half my rib cage and suck my own dick.
Please, for the sake of all mankind, do no such thing. If you disregard the previous advice, hide from the world before you commit said act.

There are millions of people crazy enough to pay for it, you think Microsoft is going to just say "OK you don't have to give us money anymore"?

If Xbox LIVE was free its service would be as bad as PlayStation. Lets prey to Gawd that Never Happens.
Seriously now? Have you ever even played on PSN? (if you have, disregard the next few statements) PSN is perfectly fine, and most of the games I play on it never lag, at least not profusely since lag is common for any online service. PSN is a perfectly good service for free and asks you near nothing in return, I don't know where you get off saying that PSN is bad unless you personally had some bad experiences with it.

OT: No, LIVE will never be free as long as people are willing to pay for it. End of story.

Don't see what the problem is with a lot of people here, paying for XBL isn't a problem at all considering that it's not overly expensive and is an EXCELLENT all around service.
nobody asked "is xbox live a problem and overly expensive?"

I was making an unenthusiastic joke. Don't mind it if you didn't find it funny, I didn't really either.

A while back I heard that X-box live was going to become a free service, but nothing has come of it since. Does anyone out there in internet land have any information?
It'll be free when/if PS3's online gaming service surpasses Live's and MS starts to lose business because of that. It'll be similar to the whole Windows Live situation.

never going to happen ever because it makes them so much money and no company will choose to get rid of something that makes that much money unless the entire community threatens to stop using it.

Microsoft, give up money? I don't think I've ever laughed as dangerously hard as when i read that supposition.

That would be the worst idea ever!! How horrible do you wan the server to be? The maintenence would never happen or be 1/2 assed on every glitch fix.... my proposal is that xbox offer a platinum package along with the gold and silver. Let it be $100 a year and no one under 18 would be allowed to join. All game content would be free to download instead of this ticky tack download somthing for a retarded exchange rate of 80 points on the dollar. This service would be available by dedicated servers so your Gears of War game never ends when a loser quits. The maintenence would be monthly instead of semi yearly and you could connect with those who are on Gold and Silver on your own terms. The only thing that would get you banned is if you pretend to be older than 18 and are not and get caught. Then you are banned for life, your system is flagged and never available to play live again. Bill gates and your internet service provider come out to your house, Gates kicks you in the nuts (ensuring your squeaky voice never leaves you) while the cable guy rips the insulated high speed cable out of your walls and replaces it with silly string.
I was a kid once too, but my balls dropped when I was 11...

Why would they make it free and lose millions in monthly revenue when nobody really has a problem with the subscription anyway ?
