Surely an egg containing what is now known as a chicken came out of something very similar to but not quite a chicken. Hence the egg came first. That's what I always thought, seemed obvious.

That's what I thought. It always made sense to me.

Though to be honest I really hate this aurgument. In the end it is a creation vs. evolution argument and it just never ends.

Some proto-chicken laid an egg and that egg contain the first chicken, thus the first chicken egg which then lead to the first chicken that continued its chickeny genes into the future of poultry. It's clear to me that chickens as we define them must come from eggs and animals must come from their ancestors so the first chicken must have come from an egg which came from evolution acting on a proto-chicken and since species evolve and not individuals a proto-chicken cannot eveole into a chicken so it must have laid the egg of the first chicken. Thus, the egg came first. Now, What is the sound of one hand clapping?

I think the question is pretty stupid, because in order for an egg to exist, there had to be a chicken to lay it, and in order for a chicken to exist, it had to come out of an egg.

The reality is not the chicken or the egg, it's sort of both. With each new egg laid, genes were passed on and evolution gradually took place.

This is an easy question, people are stupid, these scientists are stupid.

First we ask "what is a chicken".

A chicken is the evolved avian we see today, therefore by the process of evolution the modern definition of "chicken" must have slowly evolved from an ancestor.

Then we go "when did the chicken come to be"

Its easy really, at some point the chickens nearest genetic ancestor must have mutated in a way to make it a chicken, perhaps by a single chromesome, the nearly chicken gave birth to a somewhat different modern chicken.

So in this situation the almost chicken lays an egg containing the mutant modern chicken, thus the egg that contained the first real chicken came first and hatched to be the first real chiken. Egg first, then chicken. Easy as hell. ITs because the egg layed was not layed by a modern chicken, it was layed by an almost chicken that gave birth to the mutant modern chicken.

Well then, I don't think you quite understand how evolution works. The egg would have been layed by something that is nearly a chicken and the offspring would be a mutation that is a chicken. That chicken then passes on its genes and more chickens are made, and eventually the previous species dies out.

Therefore, the egg comes first.

i understand this but i always assumed it was a chicken egg, not a random egg
therefore the evolutions of species up until the point of the first real "Chicken egg" would be the evolution then the actual Chicken Egg, Then The Chicken and so on and so forth until they evolve again and Chickens cease to exist and are replaced by a new Species of Chicken-Like animals

Egg came first. an almost chicken laid an egg and out popped a chicken. An almost chicken doesn't become a chicken during life and lay an egg.

Simplified Creationist answer:
Egg came first. God created the fowl. the first fowl were wild. To get a chicken requires farming and domestification. After leaving Eden, wild animals didn't listen to Adam. the fowl would have to have been raised to follow Adam. The birds that eventually followed man became the chicken.
