Microsoft is making some very promising steps with Windows 7. I've read that Win7 is so resource-efficient it'll even run on a Netbook, something Vista can't do.

As I see it Windows 7 : Windows Vista :: Windows XP : Windows BSOD ME. Good thing, too, because I'm on record as saying that if Windows 7 sucks I'm giving up PC gaming and taking up model railroading. I wonder if Model Railroader likes freelance submissions the way The Escapist does.

I understand why games/software/HD movies are large, but an Operating system?

And here comes another entrant into the argument, the Linux defender and extreme Windows Vista hater, RAKtheUndead!

........Insert a large series of valid and fairly well researched points and counterpoints reguarding the negative aspects of Vista and previous OS versions..........

You seem to have forgotten the lone person who does - or did - hate XP as much as Vista. I certainly do remember XP before Service Pack 2 - I was one of the only people who rejected XP outright before they released it. I stuck with Windows 98 until the bitter end, even though that was a pile of crap itself. That was at the time when I first realized just how much potential Linux had, if it could be targeted by more games developers.

You know, I have to agree with a lot of what you've said, especially the part about waiting to upgrade XP. I threw a fit when they announced they would no longer be releasing anything that supported 98. Luckily for me, a little while later, WinXP service pack 2 was released, and it was good enough.

Now while Mac or Linux (depending on the version) may be be a lot better for compiling massive amounts of code, making art (movies/music/pictures), booting and running efficiently, etc. The real problem is games.

Like a few other people on this site, I am a gamer. That means that I have to use whatever supports my ability to fulfill my addiction calling. At its current stage, even with Wine, Linux and Mac are not ready to replace windows XP32bit as the best OS for games. While it may be possible to run a lot of the games through very hard work, I'm more for playing the actual games than working hard to get them to run.

Linux, Mac, Vista, Xp64bit all have massive compatibility problems when it comes to games, and the drivers needed for my hardware so I can play said games. Unless I suddenly decide I need to use my computer for some reason other than games, or O.O.O. to finish my book, I'm sticking with the most "gamer friendly" OS out there, whatever it may be at the time.
