On that note..Fine i'mma stop being a tease.. Not least cos i think you (silentpony) might actually be someone who could be interested by this site (being a 40k fan pretty much auto qualifies you). It's possible others might be interested too. Honestly based on my gut feeling, I think this place is like for 15-20% of the remaining escapist pop at best.
http://www.rpgcodex.net/
Disclaimer for the codex':
-Say dumb shit, people will call you dumb. Mods jobs are mainly administrative, they don't care about tone policing, this can also lead to a lot of bluntness.
-Site has an overall right wing bias, the rpgcodex welcomes discussion but the usual sort of snarkiness and rhetoric that "won" you arguments on this site won't work on rpgcodex and people will quickly call you out on your attempts to appear smarter then you are.
You'll find left wingers and liberals on the site, but due to the site's reputation for hostility and edginess, it tends to chase them away (a reputation the forumites encourage precisely because of that reason even though imo they are a nicer bunch then on this site overall once you get past the blunt exterior). When it comes to political threads in particular i've felt more comfortable sharing my views on that site even when they went against the grain of the thread i was posting in then i have ever done on this site and likewise tend to feel more listened to even when the person doesn't agree with me.
-Somewhat related to the above, the user base of the dex tends to be older and more seasoned then those on this site, and there is also far more users from outside usa and uk.
-Even though the primary drive of the codex is on rpgs (it's in the name after all!) they cover all genres.
-If you're the kinda person who genuinely likes neogafs moderation and how they ban people for having the wrong views, or in general value strict moderation, stay the fuck away please xD You'll hate it there.
-The codex is highly critical when it comes to games and any praise and acclaim there for a game is hard earned.
-Lots of NSFW content, heck there's even porn threads floating around if that's your thing.
Hm... Looks interesting! And ooooh, XenForo. I'll add it to the list but some things do give me pause.
For one, I don't want another Twitter. Twitter is so unrestrained in its toxicity that it's almost literally out of control. Every time I hear of some social media bullshit going down, it's usually on Twitter. Now I'm not saying RPG Codex is that bad, but it sounds kinda like it. It's nice to be free from arbitrary rules, (believe me, I know) but sometimes, you need to crack down to maintain at least a semi-civil atmosphere or you're just gonna get another /b/. Again though, I'm not saying that it's necessarily like that.
The second thing, although a much smaller issue is the lack of custom avatars. It's not a dealbreaker but it is a bummer. Avatars are both handy and a nice way to very quickly identify who's talking in a particular post. Usernames rarely ever tell you even a snippet about who someone is. Avatars are better for that. Although admittedly not by much. It's like the badges here. Sure they're not necessary at all, but they're fun and you can just ignore them if you want.
And the third thing is... The NSFW content, like, is there any rule restricting its posting to only in certain sub-forums?
EDIT: Nevermind. It's contained so it's good.
To be honest, it heavily reminds me of a certain glorious famous site lost to the ages... A place only the true internet vets know of and speak of in hallowed whispers.

As far as I know, The Escapist will continue as before. No one has made any mention of closing the site. If I hear any such news, I will be sure to pass it along, but for now, it's full steam ahead as usual.
So, we've gone through some layoffs but the site is still alive and lacks any immediate plans for shutting down.
Sorry but I ain't buying it. Not that I think ffronw is lying in the slightest, but that I have so little faith in Defy Media anymore that I bet they totally would shut down this site without warning even their own bloody staff. Hell, they laid off so much of the staff out of the blue in the past already and now it's Cory and Grey on the chopping block. And where's the old editor-in-chief in all of this? I sent him a PM months ago about the future of the Escapist and have yet to receive any sort of reply from him. All he apparently has time for is writing up some stupid lists.
Yeah, I'm salty. So much talent just freaking went to waste for nothing. First it was Extra Credits, then the Tech Team and co., and then it was Cory and Grey. And all of this with absolutely no plans to even get new blood in. I mean, what the hell??? It's obvious Defy Media is either,
1. So incompetent, they can't even compete with halfway known youtubers in maintaining a stable userbase.
2. They don't give two shits.
Either way, I'm done. I love the format of the site, I like the users, I like the freedom with the avatars, and the quizzes and badges are a fun feature, and I even liked how I could catch up on my gaming news and discuss it all in one convenient place, but it's clear that this ship is sailing to the bottom of the ocean.

I hate it when people change their unique and recognizable avatars into indistinct brown smudges.
Africa Grit is best grit. You hate it at first but then you love it. Like Stockholm Syndrome.
