So, we've gone through some layoffs but the site is still alive and lacks any immediate plans for shutting down.

Oh no, I still have them, that's the problem lol. I could fuck this place up right now. But I won't, cause that's stupid. I'm just never going to use the powers, so it's probably best they take them away from me.

Actually you're way off without knowing it because Mods are like ninjas: You don't even know we're there but we are--working in the shadows.

I didn't Lilani still had her Mod powers but there are about 8 or 9 active Mods at the moment. Some more active than others, sure but myself and Tippy2 and JoJo and Katherine are the ones whom are most visible because of our interaction with the community.
That's a question I've been meaning to ask; Are there any plans on removing the inactive mods from the mod list? Barbas is still listed on there, and Caliostro hasn't logged in since the middle of last year. (EDIT: I'm talking about the mod list at the bottom of the COC, in case I wasn't clear.)

Lilani says that she's retired too? I think? But she's still listed on there as well.

Barbas is considered to be on a sabbatical. Lilani was a technical oversight. Caliostro is a special case.

Yeah, we've been discussing updating the list. Then this layoff thing came up so that's being put off until we know what the higher-ups are on about.

Do they really not let you upload your own avatar? That's so lame.
Oh right I should probably have mentioned that, I don't care so much about avatars (it's why i went with same one for soo long until i was forced otherwise when everyone's avatar reset, then tried to play around and get an animated zap brannegan avatar, failed at that and decided sod it, i'll just leave it as it is even if it's unanimated, that's how little i care) so for me it didn't even register, but yeah, you gotta choose amongst the state approved avatars, it is possible to request some avatar sets though if they are thematically suited to the site.

But yeah, lovers of custom avatars might be put off by this.

It never ceases to amaze me how long you've been around, yet how comparatively few posts you have to others who haven't been around as long.
I lurked for a long while, I just happened to create an account while lurking. My very first post was created September 6th, 2009. Even after that, I was generally pretty quiet and kept to myself.

It's only the last few years or so that I've really embraced posting more often but even then, I stay out of the hot topic stuff so generally I say my piece and walk away without getting in a flame war with someone else (the closest I think I've ever gotten to expressing a flame worthy opinion was how I actually liked the Mass Effect 3 ending Yes, pre-extended cut, I've never even seen the extended cut, come at me bro!).

No tone policing? so I can reciprocate soemone's rudeness to me and not have to worry that their mod friends will unfairly punish me and not them despite their vitriol being worse? An evenhanded mod policy would do a lot to foster actual discussion instead of the one sided chilling effect it feels like when you think the mods will consistently side against you for your views.
This is the second time this week I've heard tale of the codex. It may just be up my alley. Giantitp forum is nice too- I could become bi-forumal I guess.
Good to know I can be a left winger there despite the right bias and still get respect. My fellow lefties gave up on tolerance about 3 years ago it feels like. Maybe I can find open minded pro-free speech lefties there who like the same games I like. Its so hard to find people that dislike Trump AND dislike Anti-fa.
Yup you have the all green to be as nasty to people as you want and reciprocate the way people are with you.
There's a few rude posters here and there who take advantage of this freedom to be rude to everybody, but once you identify those and learn to filter them out or ignore them, then you're good (also they will usually be tagged as such).

As for mods, they have no right to punish you for being contrarian and the site owner will be lightning quick at kicking them out if they are so much as suspected of acting in the manner you describe. It's the kind of behavior the codex actively mocks other sites and forums for after all.
Not to say the dex is completely without rules, but it's a very spartan list and you have to try pretty damned hard to fall afoul of them.

And yup, if you are able to explain your stances well enough and not descend into invoking "isms" to shame people into submission, then your views will be respected even if they are disagreed with. With the exception of my stance on immigration, i'm a leftie through and haven't felt too penalized by it on the codex, heck in the 2 or so years ive been a part of it, i've yet to even be in a heated discussion in a political thread, such is the level of respect i've gotten, whereas on this site anytime i type something contrarian i just know i'm gonna get taken along for a ride by some wanker and their friends list.

I have posted quite a few contrarian (but polite) posts on the rpg codex revealing my left wing tendencies, in threads filled with right wingers, and whilst i might get the odd negative reaction, on the whole i'd get positive responses and more usually just users rating my posts "acknowledge this user's agenda" (oh right, this site has a rating system but there's a zillion different ratings and most use them humorously, this isn't a popularity contest like on reddit).

And lol i feel likewise regarding a lot of the lefties on this site, have we had similar experiences i wonder? xD
Anyways on the dex it would be a lot harder to find someone that LIKES antifa then it would be to find someone who hates both antifa and trump, the latter should actually be quite doable. There's a strong pro trump vibe dominating the political section atm (well a push back against the failures of the left all around i'd say more then a love for trump himself), but feel free to dissent, i certainly do ;) The site has a healthy user base so bound to be a fair number of us lefties on it even if the dominant tone is very much right wing.

Never heard of Giant in the playground until today, gonna have to check it out.

On that note..Fine i'mma stop being a tease.. Not least cos i think you (silentpony) might actually be someone who could be interested by this site (being a 40k fan pretty much auto qualifies you). It's possible others might be interested too. Honestly based on my gut feeling, I think this place is like for 15-20% of the remaining escapist pop at best.

http://www.rpgcodex.net/

Disclaimer for the codex':
-Say dumb shit, people will call you dumb. Mods jobs are mainly administrative, they don't care about tone policing, this can also lead to a lot of bluntness.
-Site has an overall right wing bias, the rpgcodex welcomes discussion but the usual sort of snarkiness and rhetoric that "won" you arguments on this site won't work on rpgcodex and people will quickly call you out on your attempts to appear smarter then you are.
You'll find left wingers and liberals on the site, but due to the site's reputation for hostility and edginess, it tends to chase them away (a reputation the forumites encourage precisely because of that reason even though imo they are a nicer bunch then on this site overall once you get past the blunt exterior). When it comes to political threads in particular i've felt more comfortable sharing my views on that site even when they went against the grain of the thread i was posting in then i have ever done on this site and likewise tend to feel more listened to even when the person doesn't agree with me.
-Somewhat related to the above, the user base of the dex tends to be older and more seasoned then those on this site, and there is also far more users from outside usa and uk.
-Even though the primary drive of the codex is on rpgs (it's in the name after all!) they cover all genres.
-If you're the kinda person who genuinely likes neogafs moderation and how they ban people for having the wrong views, or in general value strict moderation, stay the fuck away please xD You'll hate it there.
-The codex is highly critical when it comes to games and any praise and acclaim there for a game is hard earned.
-Lots of NSFW content, heck there's even porn threads floating around if that's your thing.
Hm... Looks interesting! And ooooh, XenForo. I'll add it to the list but some things do give me pause.

For one, I don't want another Twitter. Twitter is so unrestrained in its toxicity that it's almost literally out of control. Every time I hear of some social media bullshit going down, it's usually on Twitter. Now I'm not saying RPG Codex is that bad, but it sounds kinda like it. It's nice to be free from arbitrary rules, (believe me, I know) but sometimes, you need to crack down to maintain at least a semi-civil atmosphere or you're just gonna get another /b/. Again though, I'm not saying that it's necessarily like that.

The second thing, although a much smaller issue is the lack of custom avatars. It's not a dealbreaker but it is a bummer. Avatars are both handy and a nice way to very quickly identify who's talking in a particular post. Usernames rarely ever tell you even a snippet about who someone is. Avatars are better for that. Although admittedly not by much. It's like the badges here. Sure they're not necessary at all, but they're fun and you can just ignore them if you want.

And the third thing is... The NSFW content, like, is there any rule restricting its posting to only in certain sub-forums?
EDIT: Nevermind. It's contained so it's good.

To be honest, it heavily reminds me of a certain glorious famous site lost to the ages... A place only the true internet vets know of and speak of in hallowed whispers.

Sorry but I ain't buying it. Not that I think ffronw is lying in the slightest, but that I have so little faith in Defy Media anymore that I bet they totally would shut down this site without warning even their own bloody staff. Hell, they laid off so much of the staff out of the blue in the past already and now it's Cory and Grey on the chopping block. And where's the old editor-in-chief in all of this? I sent him a PM months ago about the future of the Escapist and have yet to receive any sort of reply from him. All he apparently has time for is writing up some stupid lists.

Yeah, I'm salty. So much talent just freaking went to waste for nothing. First it was Extra Credits, then the Tech Team and co., and then it was Cory and Grey. And all of this with absolutely no plans to even get new blood in. I mean, what the hell??? It's obvious Defy Media is either,

1. So incompetent, they can't even compete with halfway known youtubers in maintaining a stable userbase.
2. They don't give two shits.

Either way, I'm done. I love the format of the site, I like the users, I like the freedom with the avatars, and the quizzes and badges are a fun feature, and I even liked how I could catch up on my gaming news and discuss it all in one convenient place, but it's clear that this ship is sailing to the bottom of the ocean.

There's not really another forum that I go to. Once this dies, I'm out of places to lurk other than Reddit. I'd ask that someone direct me to another forum they like, but given my general lack of activity here, I don't think anyone will have a decent recommendation, much less want to make one.
